Cycle Sounds Series 2 or 3 Speaker/Amp 2 or 4 OHMS?
« on: November 15, 2015, 09:15:34 PM »

My FXR has limited space for wiring. I already have a Alarm with options, Extra Horns/relay, two sets of LED aux Driving Lights with one relay and controller, Photon LED lights with controller.
I have almost No. Extra Space. This is why I want to use the Small but limited power Cycle Sounds 150/200 amp that uses the 3.5mm
Stereo jack input .I want to use the Kicker 3" motorcycle speakers not the Cycle Sounds. But I need to know either the amp ohm ratings or the 2.5" or 3" speakers ohm values. 2 or 4 OHM.
Thanks

Well, it's 4 Ohms. I ended up buying Kicker 4" KMMTES
http://www.kicker.com/40KMMTES  housings  and KM4 coax marine speakers. Rated 50w RMS or 150 Peak.
http://www.kicker.com/41KM44CW.
I was considering the Kicker 3" PSM3 that were complete housing and speaker but I don't think they offered replacement speakers.
What I ended up with is a 4" speaker that are replaceable for same price. I will mount them to the windshield instead of the handlebars that are crowded. Now comes the hard part! Trying to figure out which amp and where the heck to put it! The actual wiring is easy for me as a retired industrial electronics technician. Most likely get the JL Audio MHX280/4

I looked at the cycle sounds amp and could not find any published specs on it.

That is a killer JL Audio unit, but it is awfully long at 8.66".
Got any place in mind to mount it?

Looks like you have a fun project started and I would like to see pics when done.

I will have to put it under the Bike but what scares Me is, If It comes
loose and I run over it causes me to wreck? I found out that the Cycle Sounds and is small but it has only a 5 amp fuse. The JL unit has a 35 amp fuse the Rockford Fosgate has a 50 amp fuse. Only if I could find a small reasonable weatherproof amp with a 20 amp fuse. Thanks Guys

Well the big amps normal use draws more power than my electrical
System can handle.  I am not willing to get that. Now I am looking at the MTX MUD100.2  at 4 ohms 50w for both channels.  Draws a lot less power. And is much smaller, for easier install.  Trying to find fuse size

In general, wire is fused based on the gauge of wire the fuse is protecting and is not necessarily related to current draw. I have both of my PBR-300x4 amps fused at 20 amps and have never had an issue in 3yrs of pounding them at full volume.

I just redid a pitiful install that was done by a very reputable shop locally. They used a Rockford amp install kit - came with 8ga primary power and a 60amp primary fuse. Crazy.

The amount of current draw by an amp is more related to the efficiency of your speakers than anything else. The SPL rating of  speaker is the measure of how efficiently the speakers use the power available from the amp. This directly relates to the current draw by the amp. A speaker rated at 89dB (1w/1m) will require twice the power from an amp to generate the same SPL as a speaker rated at 92dB (1w/1m).

Current and power is what you use - SPL is what you hear.

I got the Kicker speaker housings. Man, I did not think 1" bigger speakers would make that big of a difference. These things look huge. I guess if the speakers sound really good , I can get over the looks. MAYBE! Still waiting on speakers and amp. I didn't know these things were plastic,  the clamps are big and ugly.  I think I will use then for a while then get some 3" Chrome speakers. The in the housings is fiber filling.

Yea, when I held a ruler up there was one thing but when I got the speaker housings well that was another. I absolutely hate that they were plastic and the original mounts sucked. Too big and bulky.
I got some nice Kuryakyn 1" P clamps that will work  nicely. 3 " speakers would look better but will have a lot lower SPL rating and would be difficult to hear.

I had the ones from J&M. Kinda spendy but waterproof and good sound. Came with a volume switch that mounted on handlebars and a docking station for a XM radio back when XM first came out. Had it on a 2000 RK but sold the bike with. Should have kept the speakers and docking station as the guy who bought it has never used it. The speakers and docking station back then were right at $1000.

Well I rode my Bike today.  Stereo sounds good but it's not loud enough to hear music when motor gets about 2700 rpm. OH WELL!
At least I can have music at campgrounds when I plug in a external
P.S. so it won't kill my battery.  I like the sound of my pipes more than I want to hear music. If I want only music I can Rock ot at Home with 2500 watts of power . Speakers have SPL of 102 db and
131 spl at 50 watts RMS then the rest is for extended Dynamic Range
