Added a Mini Beast horn
« on: March 26, 2010, 11:02:09 PM »

Stock horn only worked about half the time the button was pushed, the rest of the time it sounded like crap.

Got the horn off Eastern on eBay, about 125 delivered.

It is loud, and it semi matches the tear drop air cleaner I have on the other side, at least as well as HD oil temp gauges match.

Only thing I don't care for is the mounting tab is black. I had the cylinder head bracket chromed along with some other pieces. Although it doesn't really show it does stand out now with all the chrome and the black tab.

Pro Pad told me they offer a chrome bracket but most vendors chose not to carry it.

I took the old horn bracket and cut the end off - it fits good. All chrome now.

Did you need to use a relay switch?

Looks good...I'm afraid to spend any money in that area right now.  I don't know yet if I'm going to need a fan there for my 110? :confused5:

Porthole; Where did you get the finned headbolt bridge? The 2005 is a 110 right? I would like those on my 2010

You can buy the finned bridge on Porthole's bike, buy a can of granite spray paint from HD, and install them on the 110's like several of us did.  Paint the black starter granite while you are at it-looks much better.

Did you need to use a relay switch?

I put one on yesterday.  It comes with a wiring harness to use a relay to power it directly from the battery.  The instructions say it is to ensure the loudest possible horn, but not liking to add more wires and components than I have to, and the fact I already have a tender wired to the battery,  I was wondering why that was necessary so just hooked it up directly to the existing horn wires.  So far no problems.  Switches are generally sized to handle the fused load.

The only thing I noticed is that because of the size and weight it really flops around on the rubber mount.  I may drill a hole and run a small bolt through the grommet to try and calm it down; I'm afraid it will work itself loose as much as it vibrates.

Without the relay, you may melt your horn button and possibly start an electrical fire. The stock horn does not run off a 30amp fuse which is recommended to be put inline from the battery to the compressor on an air horn. Direct hook up will, after a couple of long blasts, melt your switch. Just saying.  :skull:

I went from stock to the Metal Arts flame airhorn which used the stock wiring to the Mini Beast which required additional wiring to the Mini Beast II which used the wiring I had in place for MB I. I also have the tender wiring on the battery, but it wasn't a problem to add these.

You're choosing to run a small air compressor off the small circuit originally intended for lighter loads.  One of those things that will be fine right up until the moment it no longer is.

The horn switch gets it 12V from the accessory fuse 15amp circuit which also powers the stop, tail, directional and run lamps. The horn for the mini beast is the Stebel Nautilus Compact that is rated by Stebel at < or = 18Amp. I think you should reconsider installing the horn relay. It's not that difficult a job.
Photo is where I located a Stebel Compact air horn since I have a cooling fan mounted at the former horn location.

Another view. I used the HD premium air horn mounting kit and a three piece clamp to install. Oh yea, horn relay which comes with kit was used.
