17 Ultra limited radio interfence
« on: October 22, 2018, 07:47:57 AM »

While riding my radio sound is crackly sounding. I engage clutch and it clears up. Release clutch and crackly again. Doesnt happen while sitting in neutral. A little needed on this one

Have you changed spark plugs or sparkplug wires recently?

No I havent changed plugs or wires. If I was getting noise why would it stop when i engage the clutch. One guy stated it is the neutral safety switch. Im stumped to to the lack of consistency  of it happening.
I might ride for an hour or 5 minutes before it happens.

Since nobody has asked yet, what does your dealer say?  Have they test ridden it and experienced the same thing?  You don't state if there is warranty left but I'm assuming yes since it's a '17 and depending on when you purchased.  You may get the old "they all do that" or "it's normal, keep riding" but then again you may have a good dealer that will investigate...sounds like a grounding/shorting issues in the left side switch pack (which you would have to replace in it's entirety...hopefully under warranty).

I am thinking the same as Haird, it sounds like the left switch pack as that also has the volume switch and is shorting or losing ground when you pull the on the clutch lever.

The only thing that puzzles me is why it doesn’t do that in neutral sitting, have you tried ridding in second gear and shifting to neutral and let it coast to se if the statistic is there?

Im thinking you guys are correct about the short. I am on vacation and each ride is hit or miss on whether it will work and for how long. When I get home this weekend i will see if my home dealership will take my word for it or have to take it for a ride to see if they experience it. I did around 300 miles today and each time I started up it would work for a little while but acted up again. The last leg was about 50 miles and was working up til the last ten or so .

I feel the Dealership will want to check it out because they will not advise you on what to replace as if a part doesn’t fix the problem you might want to return the part and they will not take electrical parts back.

Due to the inconsistency Im just hoping it happens when i take it to the dealer or they might tell me sorry but we have to hear it.

Is the bike still covered by the factory warranty?  If so, make sure they actually document on a repair order your complaint and their response, and give you a copy.  Written documentation works in your favor if they blow you off until the warranty expires, then try to charge you later to fix the problem.

I agree with Jerry on getting documentation.
When you go to the dealer and it is acting up, pull up to the service entrance and leave it running while you get the adviser to come out to hear the complaint.

If I am reading this correctly you are saying it only happens when you hold the clutch lever in? If so, it sounds like the switch pack diagnosis above is very reasonable.
