Topic: Fairing contacting fuel tank?!!! (Read 6649 times)

Today after returning from a nice ride, I noticed that the inside left of my fairing is contacting the front left side of my tank!!! It hits when the bars are turned all the way left. It has left paint damage on the tank!! Has anyone had this issue? It is so disappointing!

No it only contacts on the left side

That's odd. Ain't suppose to do that.

There are stops that should prevent this from happening.

I would bring it to the dealer and show them the damage and request a new one. JMO

Just another thing I have to add to my list of "Things To Check Before My Initial Ride".....................It's a pretty long list

How much room do you have on the right? I don't know what dealership you got the bike from but they should correct it at no cost.

I seem to remember right after H-D went to the new 6 gallon tank that someone with a SEUC said that his inner fairing switch cap rubbed his tank when the bars were turned all the way, but I don't remember if he ever came back and told us what the cause turned out to be.

Take it to the dealer ASAP and don't try to take anything apart yourself. If you start messing with it you may get blamed for the damage.

Just got back from the dealer, the issue has been resolved, the fairing was a little loose. Little to no damage on the inside left of the fuel tank, but still a little rub point on the clear coat.

Rub through to the color? Will it buff out cleanly? If it's through to the color or won't buff out cleanly are they replacing? It is a manufacturer error on a new bike...

It doesn't appear that it will buff out, but it is so small and unnoticeable, I told them I didn't want the tank replaced. That is, unless the problem continue, but for now it has been resolved. Yes it was an error on the manufacturing.

Your decision.... but I'd have it replaced or at least let them order one and decide when it comes in if I wanted to actually replace it.

I'm with d00d on this one...I'd go for the replacement. If it comes in and there's something wrong with it (like noticeable problems with the gold leafing), you don't have to accept it, but if there isn't you have a new tank with no problems associated with it. Did you get some rub marks in the fairing too?

If you are the same guy, let them replace the tank. That will bother you forever.

AB-SO-LUTELY!! I've always loved how the same folks who try to talk you out of getting things fixed on your new car or bike are the first ones to mention those same little flaws when explaining why they are screwing you on a trade-in allowance.

Unless there is something else in this case that we aren't aware of, I can't think of a single reason for not having the dealership replace the damaged/defective parts under warranty. It's not like you'd be getting a back alley respray; with CVO's they actually replace the parts with another part painted by the same OE vendor.

You'll be so much happier doing that.

It's funny how when we get a blemish on our bikes whenever we walk by it our eyes are drawn right to it. You/We can never get it out our mind.

yeah.. have them order one in and replace it when you put a bigger nick in the piece.... then you will not have to go through the whole touch up process like on another topic....

They call me "Warranty Dick", I would not be bothered by how nit picky you think you are.

If it's an issue with you..........claim it! All they can do is say no.

My mirror chipped down in Florida last month....claimed it, got a new one.
Last week the emblem for the air cleaner was pitted.....claimed it, got a new one.

I will continue to do this for the life of the warranty, and if the dealership complies with most or all, I will extend the warranty. If not............I won't.

Agree absolutely, since becoming a member on this site I have been much more aggressive with getting repairs and expect higher quality work done on my bike. After all, as dedicated HD customers, we deserve it.

Sad part is that as the buyers of their highest cost product line you would think they would be proactive in the resolution of known issues. Unfortunately this is not readily the case.

Roger that, I have tried really hard to get the mechanics at the dealer to understand that I am not the typical HD owner....I expect impeccable work done with a higher degree of attention to detail.

Have them order the replacement tank and cut a deal for the current one as a backup if something else ever happens. You may get the otherone for the price of the removal and replacement by doing it yourself and not having the dealer do it. Its either that or the dealer will put it on E bay. Depends on how close you are with the service manager at the dealership on what type of deal you can cut.
