« on: May 05, 2008, 11:05:50 AM »

when turning on ignition, the red engine symbol lights up will fuel pump turns on, then goes out out for four seconds and comes back on for eight seconds, then goes back out. This happens once ignition is turned on, whether I sart the bike or not, same condition. bikes runs fine , and the light does not come back during ride, anyone else ever have this condition? if so...what is the cure to get light out, and make sure there is really nothing wrong? :orange: btw this on my 'oo SERG

Doesn't this mean there is an error code stored? :nixweiss:

If the light goes out after several seconds, there is an historical code stored. It will clear in 50 start/stop cycles, unless it happens again.

The service manual describes how to pull those codes.

To check the if there is a stored code.  I believe you have to turn the ignition switch on for 2-3 seconds, off for two to three seconds, on for 2-3 .  of course with the  fuel pump switch on.  there will be a series of 6 or maybe 8 flashe twice followed by slower flashes, they will have a slightly longer pause between the error numbers. usually a two digit code.  example after the series of fast flashes,    flash pause flash flash flash.   This will represent a 1 4 code.  If there is more codes stored there will be another series of 6-8 flashes ect, followed by the slower flashes.

I had this happen to me, and like you said it went away after just a few seconds. not to come back until after shutting down.  Mine had stored codes, and it was + battery voltage, and crank/cam sensor.  Never came back after I changed out the battery.   But that was just my situation.  At least you can check what is stored though.    Scot

Sorry,  On/off/on/off/on  2 second pauses in between.  Then the engine light will start the flashing...  :2vrolijk_21:

Mine does the same thing....I think I'll have them check it out when I get my 5K service done.  It happened on our trip to  Big Bend.  I think I may have started the engine too soon before the light went out the first time and hence the two light signal.

Wait until the light goes out???  I wait until I don't hear the fuel pump any longer and start it up, I never wait the 2 extra seconds or so for the light to go out.  I will check if my engine light blinks when I ride home this afternoon.

Hey Erniezap-  Somewhere in the middle of the thread you referenced they state that this procedure is good for the 04 and newer (serial bus) bikes.  There must be another drill for the older bikes...

I was thinking the same thing about the newer bikes.......you have to got the ignition switch thing to find out the codes without the dealer.  count the flashes.   Sure would be nice to actually read the codes, instead of decifering them.  Scot

Nope, no flashes from the engine light even though I do not wait for it to go out before starting the bike - scratch that from the list of causes.
