Hey Man

Appreciate the feedback but I think I will be OK in this instance because the thing is so light, without a radio and all. Plus the 14 has cartridge forks at least in one side...

I love what you did MrSurly.  Is there a write up of the parts used?  Been thinking about it for awhile now.

I posted at length on another forum, I will PM a link.

Yesterday out riding, when I stopped to get something out of the right saddle bag on the 17.  Found the new and improved bag fastener that screws in laying in the bottom of the bag.  Could not get it to screw in and catch for the life of me.

Figured out the reason, the right side of the bike had the old style wire clips so nothing for the screw fasteners to screw into.

Had dealer fix it.

I see Harley Quality control is still lacking at the factory.

I put a king size sheet over my rig as I prepare for the Hurricane Matthew to visit the East Coast shoreline!

Not gonna be pretty.

So the screw was never in?  Not trying to be a dick here, but I would have thought that the dealer or you would have caught that while checking out the bags at the dealership or you while putting stuff into the bag?  It was probably in the hole, but not threaded in.

I lost my left bag on my '09 SERG a few years ago.  The 1/4-turn pins were bent and still inside the bag when I got it back from someone that picked it up.  I rode home with my hands almost always on my saddle bags.  I've now gone to the J nuts and bolts, but I still check them out every ride to make sure they're snug.  At $1,725 for a new bag, I take precautions now just in case.

Dave, I had one amber turn lens and three smoked lens on my '15 when delivered.  Did not notice it till I got home and prepping to put CD led's on it.  While I'm sure selling dealer would have fixed it, it was easier to pick a lens up at a closer dealer and fix it myself than ride 50 miles round trip to get it fixed.  Guess that's what happens when assembly lines are combined.

Last week installed 16" Carlini Menace bars, and daymaker led passing lights, headlight, and led signals. Yesterday I ordered Rinehart pipes, a tuner, and booked a dyno tune/remap

Dave take the bag off and look at it under a good magnified light to make sure there are #1 no very, very fine cracks in the paint and #2 any chafing removed the clear-coat / damaged the paint due to the vibration and movement of a non secured hardbag. Same exact thing happened to me in 2002 with my 2001 RoadGlide, dealer did service didn't attach one of the pins one bag chafed on the ride home, dealer ordered new bag from Harley Paint Shop and replaced it.

When looking at the bike, I did check the screws on the left bag, threaded one all the way out and back in.  Thought wow, a nice improvement.  Also thought they will take up some luggage space.  I did hit the rear one on the right bag putting rain gear and stuff in, it felt secure.  The front looked fine.  The bags never wiggled or moved.

The new bag pins are suppose to fix the old issue.  But it does not work if half the hardware is the old style with nothing for the new treaded pins to screw into.
