I have to buy a new battery for my 2014 Ultra limited. The OEM lasted this long should I just stick with OEM or does someone have another suggestion?

Harley has a new lighter weight battery that has more cranking amps than the original batteries..The cost is $299.99 for the touring bikes.

You will get a lot of suggestions. The OEM battery is over priced when compared to the exact same battery which is made by Deka. Here is one alternative, there are others:

Unfortunately there is no guarantee that a replacement battery will last as long as your current one. I've owned batteries that lasted six years, and others that barely lasted one year. The brand name on the label seems to have little to do with longevity (the one I owned that barely lasted one year was from H-D). I'd suggest saving some money and looking at the batteries from sources other than Harley. I've used Deka batteries, both those with their own name on them as well as the same item from Battery Mart that has their name on it. Work just as well as the H-D labeled part, for about $50 less. If you want higher cranking amps, try the Yuasa (Japanese name but made in the USA). They are more expensive than Deka, but still less than H-D.

I have had great luck with Batteries Plus brand. They will take your old batt for free...My dealer wants $$ to take the old one.

Obviously your dealer is a crook. I've never encountered any place of business that tried to charge me for taking in the old battery when selling me a new one. In most cases they will charge you a core fee if you don't have an old one to turn in. Used batteries are normally recycled by the industry and much of the material is reused. In the case of buying new batteries online, I have just taken the old ones to a recycling place near me, or many auto parts places will take them for free and include them with their own returns. They get paid by the recyclers for the old ones, so there's no reason I can think of why they would charge anyone to take it.

Around here several of the auto parts stores will actually pay you a few bucks for your old batteries (not when exchanged for a new purchase of course). Obviously they're getting slightly more from the recyclers. Anything is better than zero though; so might as well take them in.

Exactly. Several years ago I bought a Deka from batterymart.com. After install I took my old H-D battery to Auto Zone and got some amount (don't recall) of store credit for it. Don't think dealer would have given me anything.

Deka is good and makes (made?) OE batteries for HD.

Easiest way to get rid of a battery is set it on top of your garbage can on garbage day. Batteries, recyclable metal, etc. will all be grabbed by the "junkers".

Just bought same one at Advanced Auto for $178, fit is perfect. The HD tag on the battery doubles the price for no difference.

Tip though: the terminal posts are not threatened,they come with square nuts that are inserted into the posts from the side. With the tight working space, I used a zip tie to hold the nut to the top of the post. Zip tie was loose so loop goes through hollow terminal and around top, zip tie is used to pull nut to top of post when terminal screws are installed but also to assist in lifting the battery in and out of the battery box with help of strap on bike.

I just bought one of the Renegade 600+ batteries and installed it last Sunday. It seems good so far, started the bike once after the install.

Out of box voltage was around 13.9v. Have battery tender on it now and will start again this weekend. Cold oil and all will be a good cranking test.

Last year at ES it was cranking a bit slow in the mornings and I felt that a battery "may" be in my future. Unfortunately we did not ride much on the CVO last summer, Linda's back was bothering. So when she doesn't ride with me, I ride the old '76 FLH Shovelhead. It gets lots of looks at the watering holes I frequent.

I had the tender on the CVO all winter and it would not start it, just crank a couple revs and then start to click. I pulled out the old battery, Harley replacement by the way, I had marked it as 4-14-14, so almost 5 years on the battery. I can live with that. The Shovelhead on the other hand seems to still go through batteries about every other year or so. Maybe three, but that's pushing it. They are lead acid. I'm sure that I could research and get a AGM battery, but the replacements are only in the $80 range, so not so bad.

I'll let you all know how the Renegade 600+ works when I get riding again.

As Jerry said dealer is ripping you off... taking money from you and making money on what they charged you for... imagine that.

Jerry/Don/Jerry same here... had a couple old batteries and took them to battery dealer just to drop them off for them to recycle... he gave me $$ for them which I wasn't expecting... made my day.

You say/post this jokingly... however I've seen the drastic change since coming to H-D in 1999... long gone are the Mom/Pop dealerships that you felt like family, I would visit dealership's weekly just to shoot the chit/etc.... to now the "auto" dealership mentality where you feel like you're just another profit for them.

We lose out on the friendly, family atmosphere......and they gain with buying in bulk for multiple dealerships and NOT passing on any savings to the loyal customer. I'd buy aftermarket before a HD labeled battery....as I do with almost everything lately!

Dayne 66...Last June i rode from S. California through Oregon and Washington to Canada..We even took the ferry over to Victoria and rode around a bit ..People were friendly, and one person at the dealership invited us over for dinner...The food was really good too..You cant get Harley parts shipped into Canada from the US?

Nope...used to get them shipped to Ship Happens......Mother Harley put a stop to that...now I get them shipped to a buds in the US....go down and install / pick up the goods. I'm still restricted from riding for a few more weeks but go out to the bike, roll it out of the garage and crank it. Never had to winterize one before 'cause normally I'm riding all year. However, I noticed even with it on the trickle, the bike battery seemed weak. So thanks for this and all the other threads on batteries. After 4 years of service, mine is ready to be replaced and I've got some options. I'll probably still go with the HD replacement as I have always done but there are other options to peruse. I like the lighter weight lithium option but not at those prices.

Dayne, we have friends in Canada on the east side and are having the same recent sticker shock you are having on the west side. It's highway robbery what they are doing to our Canadian brothers.

The battery terminals seemed a bit weak in that they are stamped steal versus a lead casting like other batteries. But the battery bolts tightened down nicely and I see no issues with them, other than they were not what I had expected.

I'll know more after I get riding it a bit.
