I Need Suggestions on How to Secure a Tour Pack to Rear of bike....

The Harley Mechanic suggested 2 short lockable cables.

Any other suggestions out there

Harley sells a detachable locking hardware kit. Though it's a problem with some setups. Won't work with yours?

I removed the detachable setup and installed an oem bracket from a new ultra. My tour pak is no longer removeable so it is as secure as any other part on the bike. I never detached it anyway.

Did you have a problem with the mounting hardware to make you go to the oem bracket from a new ultra?

I've had a detachable tour pak on my bike for seven years and have never locked it to the bike. Saddlebags are easy to steal as well. Thieves can get $800 seats with a screwdriver or no tools at all if you've installed Harley's knurled screw.

In summary, don't worry about it. Ride it and have fun. Thieves will probably steal the whole bike before they steal just the pieces.

ah, d'uh..... Now I get it. That unit doesn't even go over a detachable point. Attaches to any bolt and the cable that's part of the mount goes around whatever it is that's being secured.

My bad. Was thinking of it too specifically as a detachable point lock rather than a more generic cable lock.

Too bad there's no photo of the unit with the lock ass'y removed. Would like to see what kind of attaching flange is unstalled under the bolt head.

I too have the detachable KTP and when I'm concerned about it I'll take it off and bring it inside.

While you're always taking a chance of someone nabbing the bike while traveling, there really just isn't much you can do about it when riding a big bike. Some people put smaller bikes inside motel rooms, but that won't work for our bikes. Your best defense is to park in a well lit space, not out back next to a dumpster or other hidden spot. A lot of hotels will let you leave it right up front where the desk clerks can see it. It's just a deterrent. If someone is desperate enough and brazen enough, they'll get it. It's just the risks we all take when traveling by bike. I'm sure it does happen, but I don't know of anyone personally who has ever had a problem with big stuff getting stolen off of the bike at night.

Use common sense, but don't get paranoid about it. You're going on vacation to have fun, not worry about all the things that can go wrong.

Do your prep and what you can to make sure your bike is in the best shape it can be in to lessen the chance of a mechanical problem and then GO! Don't look back and don't think what if, just go. Enjoy the time on the bike and away from everyday life. You can worry about chit when you get home. Traveling by bike is the great decompression chamber we all need at times. Don't muck it up with worries.

In short, enjoy your trip. I take it this will be your first, but not your last.

A little info to share. I was talking to the GM of our local Home Depot last week. Him and seven guys were planning a cross Canada trip and there starting point was a meet at a truck stop in close proximity of all the riders. They pulled in, LOCKED their bikes & in broad daylight went in to have breakfest/meet etc. They were inside for about 45 minutes & when they came out all bikes were gone. Speaking to the cop he figures that this was a 2 truck ring wheras a transport pulls up in front of the bikes to obstruct the view from the restaurant & the 2nd is used to load them up.

No problems with the hardware fitting. I did have to buy some of it from Harley as the one I bought didn't come with the bolts and square blocks that go under the nuts. I like it. I didn't really like the detachable setup for a tour pak.

The theft took place not too long after I got the red bike Chuck. Before you came on the site. No reason you'd have remembered it. Went in to the local shopping mall. Came out 15 minutes or so later. No tour pak. I probably stood there looking at it for a couple of minutes trying to remember if it had actually been on the bike or not.

All good points being discussed here. I do think that being over paranoid takes away from some of the fun. Obviously, we all are smart enough to know about the good and the bad parts of an area, and go there or park there accordingly. But if someone is going to steal from you, they will. Keep everything insured, use common sense, and then go about riding your bike and having a good time.

This is what I have on my tourpak. It doesn't protect very much cause anyone with one has the key to all the ones in the world, but it is a small, small, deterent. Maybe they can't get to it right away and move on ( at least that's what I'm hoping for). If they wanted bad enough is gone na matter what. Also you have to install it backwards because the key won't fit if you install per instructions. my 2's centavos. Let's Roll

I use a ziptie to slow the bad guys down.I put the fattest tiewrap that will fit around the plunger on the detachable latch.It keeps the plunger from being pushed in to rotate the latch.I Carry a pair of mini end cutters that I ground down in width in case I want to take the tour-pac off.Hope no badguys read this site.

Now I like that idea. there are some pretty hefty zip ties around.
