Don't forget rain suit.  Absolutely necessary for that time of year.  Oh yeah, I'll likely have a bottle of Makers Mark with me also.

I'm with you on that.  I'll likely get a pair of flannel lined jeans for the ride too.  My wife and I were looking at heated gear on line for this trip.  We might get one or two warm days for this trip but what are the odds that all three will be warm?  Not good....

Riding gear according to Twolanerider.

  • Clothes for the men.
  • No bras for the women.

 :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:
Seriously though, just wait till closer to the time, and check the weather channel.

Rain gear has a reserved saddlebag always.

Well... yeah.

New best solution to anything more than a day trip is just pull the trailer behind the bike.  You need a lot less cold weather clothes that way.  After all, when you pack everything the Travel Gods are always going to screw with you and make most of it unnecessary.

I've got this..   Which is nice because I was able to buy the pants separate from the jacket (different sizes) as opposed to buying the whole suit...

When it rains & you must ride, being dry is important at times.  When its COLD & wet, it's more than important.

I have a set of H/D Pac-Lite Gore-Tex rain gear that is pricey, but it keeps me dry, even when it's wet.  Works great! When it's cold & raining, I NEVER think about the price. Other stuff is out there that will work, undoubtedly, but for the value, I'd choose Gore-Tex or a clone product essentially the same as Gore-Tex.  If it breathes & keeps you dry, you won't regret the investment.

Any suggestions or links for buying rain gear.......

Thanks......

For light showers/local riding look for something small and light like FrogToggs.  For long trips where you never know if you'll opened up on or not get something good.  Aerostich (sic?) or other good brands.  Even the HD branded lines have some good stuff.  This isn't a place to cut corners.  Little is more miserable than 35-40 degrees in the wind and rain and staring to notice your wet from your back to your ass because your gear leaked.

Other thing to keep in mind in the purchase process is try it on.  I've seen some that are all but impossible to get in and out of.  Since this is something that often as not you'll be doing hopping on one leg or sitting on your ass on the side of the road find out how to do and practice it a bit before it's needed.

"Before it's needed" is also the best advice for putting it on.  Watch oncoming traffic.  If it's not raining yet but their wipers are still on you've waited just about long enough.  If not too long.  It's way to easy to not stop and put the gear on. Then all the sudden you're already wet and pulling gear on over wet clothes.  Yuck.

It's a hard thing to learn to do.  But just get the stuff on early.  When it's still easy and you're still dry.  Pull off.  Find something to sit on and don't fight it or have to rush it.  Unless the sky has shown me for sure the rain is over I'm usually in the gear for the day once it's on too.  Might shed the top. But it's not worth the hassle to fight in and out two or three times going in and out of showers all day long.

Absolutely, Mike...invest in Gore-Tex stuff or the equivalent thereof...almost always, regardless of brand, this will be the most expensive, but 99% of the time, it will also be put together the most effectively..better stitching, flaps where they need to be to keep the wind/rain out of where it doesn't need to be, etc.  This stuff will be with you for a very LONG time, if you choose well...not a place to cut corners, and it can serve mulitiple purposes.

After many years of backpacking and skiing, I can assure you that this is one of the most important things to choose well, or you'll be doing it more than once, and it will cost you more than doing it right the first time.

No doubt ---- ditto the above recommendations.  If you do not have it, get it.  Unless you are not going far from home - carry it.  Don't be a hero ---- if you are going to be out in the elements, changing zip codes, you will ride in the rain.

We all have horror stories, I'm sure, of riding in some pretty bad stuff.  Sometimes, you just can't sit on the side of the road and wait it out, sometimes you got to move in it.  Do it, but do it as comfortably and safely as you can.  And if you are smart , I don't often have this claim, do as Don suggested.  Put in on before you are pulling rain gear on over wet clothes.  Unless you are an hour from home and this is your destination, riding in wet gear just Sucks - Big Time!

Terry nobody told me this starting out - if they had it's likely I would not have listened to them when I was in my 20's.  After years of biking, primitive backpacking, hunting, & boating & back to motorcycling, the gear makes a lousy weather day into a tolerable experience or even fun.  As you say, it can serve multiple purposes & even though it's expensive up front, the comfort & service outweighs the expense very quickly.

Copper Black - I have $700-$800 invested in Gore-Tex rain gear for my wife & I.  Sounds nutty maybe.  If you get Gore-Tex or equivalent, you may find it for a little less, but make sure its seam sealed & as 2LaneRider posted - practice trying it home first & on the road BEFORE it rains.  I'm bad about that myself - riding into the rain & doing the old huh-oh.........

That's about what I've got tied up in rain gear...Arc'Terex (sp?) Gore Tex bib type pants w/suspenders...zip all the way down both legs, so easy to get on and off.  They are ski/backpacking pants, so totally seal around the boot and have a heavier piece of material on the inside portion where it goes over the boot for abrasion resisitance, and an inner gaiter to keep the snow/rain from getting up the pant leg (good for forward controls on a bike, but designed for snow).  I have a HD Gore Tex pac lite jacket.  Once the pants get put on for the day, they generally stay on, as they are quite comfortable and do not give you that "clammy" feeling because they are Gore Tex.  On weekends, I often use Bank drive thrus to put the gear on...even small towns have them if you can't find some other covered place to put gear on.  We keep both rain suits in a nice waterproof Outdoor Research stuff sac, and I keep that easily accessible so I can just grab the stuff sack without digging around...on longer trips, when saddlebags are full of clothing/tools, the stuff sack gets bungied on top of the TP so it's literally a couple of seconds to get it off and pull the gear out.

Ski shops are a good source for this type of gear, and at certain times of year, you can find good sales.  Don't forget some kind of waterproof glove...I have a pair of waterproof/breathable shells that go over my thinner deerskin gloves, or can be worn alone.  I have another pair of canoeing gloves that are like wet suit material...precurved, so they work well with the grips, and have the added benefit of warmth plus waterproofness.

It's an investment up front, but can turn what would othewise be a miserable experience into one that is at least tolerable.  Most of us wear cotton clothing, and once cotton gets wet, it is miserable to stay in for the rest of the day and takes forever to dry.  I like the wicking type t-shirts/long sleeved shirts...no, they don't have HD written all over them, but they keep you cool/warm and dry extremely fast if wet or sweaty.

I have some 10X (GoreTex clone) hunting stuff that I considered riding in, but the pants did not have the zipper like the Pac Lites ones do.  I have some of those precurved neoprene canoeing gloves & have ridden in them a couple of times.  Got a gift certificate for HD so bought HD GoreTex gloves with it.  Don't think they sell the style anymore - nylon medium weight.  They have never leaked & hands do not sweat as much on the hot days since GoreTex wicks away moisture.

Good suggestion on non cotton gear, Terry.  For good weather days I usually just wear a t-shirt.  I have thermax Duo-fold long underwear that I have worn skiing, backpacking, camping, duck hunting, riding, etc. forever (15-17 years).  Insulates when wet, wicks moisture & all but not as high tech as the new fibers.  But its comfortable & I like it.  I have some CoolMax t-shirts that are very comfortable, but no logos.

We keep our rain geat in 2 gallon ziplocks bungied shut usually in the Tour Pack on wet looking days.  May go the stuff sack route with these eventually - lord knows I have enough stuff sacks.  :huepfenjump3:

Save a lot of space and get a Gerbins tour ridding suit, It's got heat when you need it and it's water proof and no rain gear is needed, you just keep ridding While everyone else stops and get dressed and the stops again to get undressed  ;D

I hope with everyone talking about rain gear, we WON'T need it.  Better yet, no SNOW.  75 and sunny would be great.  That time of year, many variables.

Just Spoke to Gerbing Customer Service and they stated that

http://www.gerbing.com/Products/Outerwear/heatedJacket.html

is not considered rain gear but it states "Seams sealed for water resistance" is that what I am looking for in Rain Gear :nixweiss:

I would love to just buy one suit that does both.....But does it really work well in the rain  :nixweiss:

I already purchased a Gerbing Jacket/Liner and Gloves that work "GREAT" in the cold...

Any thoughts ???

You stated:

Copper Black - I have $700-$800 invested in Gore-Tex rain gear for my wife & I.  Sounds nutty maybe.  If you get Gore-Tex or equivalent, you may find it for a little less, but make sure its seam sealed & as 2LaneRider posted - practice trying it home first & on the road BEFORE it rains.  I'm bad about that myself - riding into the rain & doing the old huh-oh.........

Is this what I am looking for in the description "but make sure its seam sealed & as 2LaneRider posted" :nixweiss:

C/B...it says it's urethane coated on the inside with seam sealer...this suit may work well in the colder weather months, but it will not for warmer weather.  It will keep you dry, but because it's urethane coated the moisture from your body will not escape, so you will end up damp under the suit if you wear it for any length of time.

I'm a firm believer in layers.  I do not have any heated gear, but have heated grips and seat.  I have considered a heated vest or jacket liner, but have not gone there yet.  My cold wet "system" is a base layer of wicking underwear, including boxer briefs and t-shirt.  Over that goes wicking (Patagonia, in my case) long john top and bottoms, ski shirt that zips from chest up like a turtleneck, jeans of choice.  If it's really cold, over that goes a Gore windproof layer of fleece on top, heavy leather chaps on bottom, and heavy leather jacket with vest thinsulate zip out liner (all my leather is Fox Creek).  If it rains, I can pull off a layer, and replace it with the Gore-Tex rain gear, which keeps me dry and blocks the wind like the leather.  Depending on the aniticpated weather for the trip, I can leave some at home, or have it all with me, and shed a layer as conditions warrant.

This is my system...a piece of heated gear would take the place of a couple of those.  The fleece windproof jacket is very thin, but serves double duty as a jacket to wear when kicking around the parking lot at night when I get tired of wearing the heavy leather jacket.

Variations of this theme have worked for years when backpacking/skiing.  Layers of comfortable, non absorbing garments enable me to get warmer or cooler, depending on how much I'm exerting myself, generating body heat.  Works for me.

I just think a good Gore-Tex rain suit is a more versitile option, all things considered...otherwise you'll need something for hot weather rains, in addition to the cold weather suit.

Didn't see where anyone mentioned the FXRG High Performance Gear by H-D, and was wondering if anybody is using it and what their thoughts were on this gear. It's somewhat expensive but for someone that is doing initial outfitting of rain/cold weather gear would this be worth it. :nixweiss:

Gary...the FXRG gear is very nice...the pants are leather, and are lined with a Gore-Tex material to keep you dry as well.  The Jacket, on the other hand, does not have the Gore-Tex for some reason.  Suzanne has both pieces (got them off e-bay) and they are very nice.  Only problem is you've still got the warm weather issue, as the FXRG stuff is pretty heavy duty.  I like the Gore-Tex rain gear because you can throw it on over your t-shirt in the summer and not feel like you're in a Sauna, like with the coated materials in the less expensive stuff.

Believe me, this stuff is about as cheap as you'll find quality rain gear like we've been talking about.  Go to a local store to try it on and get your sizes, and if they won't offer you 20% off, call Jenni at Charlie's HD in West Virginia, and she'll get it for you at 20% off.

I have the jacket, but not the pants...only reason is I already have a pair of pants that are as good or better, though they are slightly less packable...take up just a little more space, but not enough more to make me spend the money for something that functions exactly the same.

Ok, sounds like it's better for cold and wet rather then warm and wet (the second half of that statement could end up going so many places :nervous: ;) ;D).

C/B...I don't know what size you wear, but this is a hell of a buy if you are a 44 or 46 waist  http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/380,14745_Lowe-Alpine-Huck-Pants-Gore-Tex-Waterproof-For-Men.html

And here's one jacket from the same place...another great deal  http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/208,44798_Lowe-Alpine-Grepon-Jacket-Waterproof-Gore-Tex-PacLite-For-Men.html

I have bought a lot of stuff from this company over the years...a lot of their things are top the line outdoor stuff.  I buy all my socks, underwear, long johns, some of my gloves, etc from this place.

I'm probably just confusing you at this point, but if you can find something you like, Sierra Trading Post is a great place!!

I like to ride, summer and winter, in lightweight ski socks...they stay up above your calf, wick moisture away from your foot, keeping your feet dry...cooler in summer, warmer in winter.  This is also a great source for long johns, shirts, etc...whatever is good for skiing/backpacking is generally good on the bike as well.

Cooper/Black - Terry gave you the links for the H/D GoreTex Pac Lite Rain Gear already.  It's what I am using & it works well in warm weather since it is not lined & it wicks perspiration away.  For cold weather, make sure you get rain gear that is big enough to go over a jacket since the pac lite stuff is not warm enough to wear by itself in 50 degree rain. Pac Lite compresses into a reasonably small area - some of the other Gore Tex stuff is kinda bulky.  I prefer lighter weight & then layer up as needed.  The H/D version has some reflective material on the outside.  Other Pac Lite is available (non HD) & you may find some deals on it.  That Sierra Trading Post (also linked above)is a GREAT company.  Had the pleasure of visiting them in person on our bike trip to Cody, WY a while ago.

BTW - TCnBham is one of the very best sources for info on this board - or anywhere for that matter on motorcycle stuff.  :2vrolijk_21:

Years ago when I was broke, a regular black trash bag with a couple of arm holes ripped in it was my rain gear.  Did not do much for arms/legs & it leaked of course but in a pinch, its better than nothing.  Now I'm broke from buying all this spiffy gear, but I'm more comfortable, dammit.   ;D

D00d - I considered FXRG gear & have not ruled it out for a future purchase.  Watching H/D's revisions on it to see if it gets closer to what I am looking for.

Mike, you make me blush, buddy... :-[  There's so much I don't know about motorcycles it scares me, but I am a gearhead on this kind of stuff.

I too have used plastic bags for boot liners, ponchos, etc...they are absolutely no fun, but when you're eating oatmeal and peanut butter, with the occasional 33 cent Taco Hell Burrito thrown in, you do what you've got to do.  Army surplus was my beginning "outdoor gear".   :huepfenlol2:  When you are 20 something you don't seem to notice being miserable as much as when you're 50 something.

The Frog Toggs will work, and they are cheap...they will melt in a New York minute though, and I'd just as soon not clean the stuff off my pipes.  Most of the better stuff will not melt very easily, and some even have a different material on the inside bottom of legs for extra durability.

The one advantage of the skiing/backpacking shell type jackets is they are normally made to put other things under them.  The HD gear is not cut large enough to wear a heavy leather jacket under, so that's where the other stuff, like fleece, comes in.  Fleece is the best thing for keeping warm since pajamas with feet in them...great insulator, will not absorb water (it's plastic), and it wicks the moisture from your body to the surface of the garment, where it evaporates quickly.

I hear that!!   :P  And I am only 49 something!!   :)

Frogg Toggs of today ain't the old Frogg Toggs. While they still have the original material, they've got some new materials which are much improved, more like Gore Tex. I got a set of their Elite Suit for Christmas and could not believe it came from the same people that produced my earlier stuff. It's REAL rain gear. It's not as packable as their earlier stuff, but it's a real garment, not that huge sack they called a jacket before.

At Christmas time they were sold out of their Elite suits and I see they still are, but take a look at Frogg Toggs, you'll be surprised with all of their new stuff.

Coincidentally Terry - I started out with Army Surplus store stuff for camping & backpacking also.  The older I get the more I am willing to spend what it takes to be comfortable.  As you posted, when my BSR & I (early years) were eating 3/$1 Taco Barf Tacos for our evening out (quick weight loss program free included at no extra charge!), anything like a Harley bike or Gore Tex rain gear might as well have been rocket fare to the moon.

I have used plastic bags inside the knees of my jeans to keep warm & wrapped them around my socks to keep my feet dry.  Now I'm more high tech, but in a pinch, it's good stuff to know. I never cared for those Frog Toggs.  Tried a pair & they look like a paper throw away dress from the 1960's to me.  :nixweiss:

Buddy, the compliment on your gear knowledge is sincere.   :2vrolijk_21:  Learned a lot from reading your posts.  As to the untouchable subject of politics - have a suspicion we might be a little bit apart there, but truthfully, that never bothers me.  Trying to get people to agree on that subject or religion is harder than trying to put a f@rt back where it came from.

I'm so friggin excited.  I was looking online for HD leather jackets for my wife for the York trip and we settled on this one...

http://www.harley-davidson.com/mcm/mcm_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448771349&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302285751&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302285751&bmUID=1201180615921&bmLocale=en_US

Contacted two local dealers inquiring how to get one for us to try on/buy.  Both said it was discontinued and was a Christmas/short term availability item.

I Googled the description and found a dealer in FLA that had three on clearance.  I placed an order on their web site and got 30% off and NO freight or tax.  It saved me $200.  It shipped yesterday.  The dealer is Latus HD.  They are set up real well for internet ordering.  I'll let you know how the jacket looks and fits.

Hey, that is a nice looking jacket.  And getting it such a discount is big bonus.  I never saw that one in the shops.   ;)

Candy...one of the great albums of all time, IMO, when the band still had it's idealism and were just having a good time.  Before the serious drugs got a hold on Jerry.  I've seen them a half dozen times or so...always a good time was had by all who attended.

I like your rose theme on the red bike...suits both you and the bike   :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

My favorite album too.   :2vrolijk_21:

My husband's family used to be "with the band" for years and years.  They lived a pretty free life style for a very long time.

And the rose theme, is so that no-one thinks it is a boy's bike.  So many people look at me and make assumptions.  Then when they actually see me on the bike, you can see the wheels turn.   :D

Great thread.  Mrs.We - your pics brough back a lot of good memories.  Good looking rose  theme!  :2vrolijk_21:

Jgeorge - beautiful HD jacket & looks warm - bet your wife will love hit.

Hoist - avatars sometimes give a hint about what folks like or where they are coming from. Noticed Binx's right away.  I have a mind for old music that wishes it could gear itself better to new music, but it just won't.  With a few exceptions.

just pull the trailer behind the bike.  You need a lot less cold weather clothes that way.  After all, when you pack everything the Travel Gods are always going to screw with you and make most of it unnecessary.

There you go, the problem is solved - Don is going to pack his entire collection of foul weather &  cold weather gear, not bring any nice weather gear and the rest of us can just enjoy the beautiful weather provided by TwoLane  :2vrolijk_21:
