Title: 2018 CVO Limited Stg 4
Post by: USNCVO on August 22, 2018, 05:31:37 PM
Ok guys,
I came into some unexpected $$$... I'm thinking about stg4 on my scoot.  My Harley shop says they want to do add a fueling oil pump, lifters and cam plate.  The dealer will still keep my warranty intact.  I have spent a lot of money there and they have ALWAYS done what they said.  All that being said, a couple of questions, am I potentially building a bomb?  What kind of numbers at the wheel should I expect?

While your Harley shop will keep your warranty intact, a breakdown on a roadtrip might reveal the use of non-harley parts and possible decline of a warranty claim.

I will make you this guarantee. If you install a non HD part like a feuling oil pump, and the engine later sumps and fails....I guarantee you that HD will not replace that engine under warranty. In fact, the moment HD becomes aware that the bike has a non-HD oil pump, the factory drivetrain warranty will be voided as well as any HD sponsored ESP on the bike.

And its highly unlikely that the dealership will cover the cost of a failed engine if HD voids your factory warranty...which they absolutely will. Does not matter what your dealer has or has not told you.

Why a Fueling oil pump, plate, and lifters?  They own stock in Fueling? Considering the large number of engine failures due to sumping, I don't see any valid reason to tempt fate by installing aftermarket parts which will in fact void the factory warranty if you have any kind of failure H-D could possibly blame on your aftermarket parts.  At this point Harley has not come out with a retrofit "fix" for the engine sumping problem (it's possible they did fix it on the 2019's with a change to the cases, only time will tell), so  unless you came into a lot of extra money and don't mind having to possibly replace the engine on your own dime, I think it would be wise to do nothing that could void the warranty.  As for verbal promises from a dealership, verbal promises and a five dollar bill will get you a cup of so-so coffee at Starbucks.

I echo what's posted above.  Verbal "warranties" aren't worth squat.  Who made it, will they even work there in six months, will they admit to telling you that, etc.  See what the response is when you ask the dealer to give you their "warranty guarantee" in writing.  I think you'll see a sudden backtracking.  Even if they did give it to you in writing, what happens if the dealer goes under or changes owners?

Ok, you guys convinced me, I'll stick with OEM parts.  With that decided, back to the original 2 questions.  Has anyone seen reliability issues on the 18 factory 117s and any guesses about who and wtq?

Several threads in here (M8 board) about sumping.  IIRC, most (but not all) of the bikes that sumped had the Stg 3 or 4 kit installed.  Seems like it happened mostly when they were winding it out for a while.

Also had a few that were pushing either engine oil or trans fluid into the primary.

So those that came from HD as a CVO with a 117 did not exhibit sumping?  I’ll read the threads as well.

Im not sure if the CVO 117 motor from the factory build is considered a stage 3 or 4.  Thoughts?

I believe there is a tech sheet from the MoCo that states all platforms can be affected it was posted in one of the threads here

A stock CVO 117 is NOT a Stage III or IV. It has the same heads, injectors, TB and cam as a stock 114 touring bike. It has the larger cylinders/pistons (obviously) with better AC and better exhaust than a stock 114.

Actually, sumping has been reported in all the various configurations of the M8.  Initially Harley thought they could fix the problem with different oil pumps, but after several variations it became obvious the root cause was not the oil pump and the new oil pump versions did not correct the problem.  There is some evidence that they have made an internal change to the engine cases for 2019 that has cured the problem for at least one customer (Heatwave on this site).  Do read the threads from him as well as SDCVO, they both have had multiple engine failures due to sumping and those threads can give you valuable insight.

Would love to see the service invoice that shows a part number for the revised oil pump.
