Title: Gas mileage while towing
Post by: 05Quadrasteer on May 29, 2017, 08:58:38 PM
So I am about 1500 miles into a coast to coast trip.  Been tracking mileage and the best I am getting is 33mpg.  Is this normal?  Without the trailer I am getting 40mpg.

Of course I did note if I slow down to 60 the mpg gets closers to 35, go up to 80 and it is down to 30mpg.  I have been running cruise between 72 and 75, flat and hilly interstates.

I was curious enough to pay attention to this on a trip for part of one day.  That bike was an 05 SEEG with an engine that was just a little upgraded.  Without the trailer cruise control on at 70 it'd do 40 mpg.  With the trailer it did 32.  That was spread over about three tanks of fuel part of one day.  After that never been curious enough to care and check it again  :huepfenlol2: .

I trailer often.  Your mileage sounds about right...

Thank you for the responses.  Good to know things are normal.

See you all soon at MIT if you are attending.

I usually ride 80-85 mph pulling my Bushtec so I think you're getting great mileage!

I can tell you that due to all your friends that think you have the room to haul all their crap (to lighten their load) will cut your mileage dramatically, from the mileage that they're getting.  To the point that they'll start clowning you about having to stop so often for gas.  :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

Yup...

45-48 riding solo
40-42 riding two-up
35/36 riding two-up with the Btec

Another added bonus is shorter rear tire tread life.

But, at the end of the day, it's all still worth it.
