Title: 2018 Indians are out
Post by: ultrarider123 on July 27, 2017, 07:28:09 AM
Just received (well a couple days ago) an email announcing the new 2018 Indian line-up.  Looks like a new Roadmaster Elite (It B blue) is there.  They moved the rear speakers from the trunk to the saddlebags (on the Elite anyway).  Makes more sense doing that on a bike that comes standard with a detachable trunk.  Getting in the CVO price range at $37,000.  They finally put the infotainment system on the Chieftain Dark Horse, too.

Looks like more color options for the Chieftain line up.  The Chieftain classic is the only one with the "classic" Indian fender.  The others Chieftains have the new fender introduced last year on the Limited and Elite.  I like the cleaner look but I'm a fan of either one.

I like the color combo on the regular Roadmaster (first picture shown) but it doesn't show as an option in the body of the page....hmmmm

I know there are some here that don't care for the Indians but I like 'em.  I'm not sure I would ever own one as I would have to eliminate all my HD garb (and that would render me naykid since most everything I have says HD on it somewhere.... ;D ).

If I could purchase a new Indian AND they would throw in $5,000 or so for a new wardrobe, we may have liftoff.... :2vrolijk_21:

Those outer fairing accents. Cannot get past that.  Except from the front view - to me - looks ok.

Some nice features though, and they utilized inner fairing space better than HD has.  Lots of real estate on that inner fairing, HD missed a big opportunity there with Rushmore.

I'm not a big fan of the lowers on the Roadmaster.  They remind me too much of the old Kawasaki Voyager.  However, as one of the sales folks stated, you can remove them which we can't do on the twin-cooled Harleys....good point.

Thanks to you Howard, now I'm gonna have to drive past the Yammy shop and check this out! That blue on black sure is sharp, I like! ... I already got my first tune picked out if I happen to like it enough to ride home ...

I love that they finally dropped the fugly tan leather seat!

Wow man ... I wasn't too crazy about these at first, but this is REALLY starting to grow on me. Yammy doesn't have my color this year anyhow ...

Looks pretty nice.  Seems they are offering a variety of front fender choices for 2018.  They have a pearl white and silver metallic Roadmaster I'd like to see in person.

Love the color

It is a nice color combo and actually done by hand at the Indian factory in Spearfish.  I am looking forward to seeing it in person.

I'd been thinking about trying an Indian I love the classic front fender, and saw they were coming out with the second Limited Jack Daniels Chieftain, So I called a few dealers they all told me they were gone in about ten minutes of there release. So I kinda forgot about it, and we had gone to the Hollister rally in July well they had one there so I asked about it, and was told a guy in Texas had bought it and they were delivering it to him at Sturgis rally.  Well about a week or so later I got a call the guy backed out, long story short I ended up with it # 20 of the 100. it's a fun bike it's just like the Harley's needs the cat cleaned out different baffles, and I'm making them put the classic front fender on it, and a removable tour pak I'm keeping the other fender thats on it now, just in case.

How about that, #20.  Congratulations!  I really want to see this in the person and in the sunshine.  Crocket Power Sports in Chattanooga has last years Chief (#13, it has 11 miles on it) for sale.  Here's the link: http://www.crockettpowersports.com/inventory/2016-indian-motorcycle-chief-vintage-jack-daniels-special-edition-chattanooga-tn-37406-1374128i
It is a beauty...older gentleman purchased it and never got to ride it.  First time JD commemorative celebrating the 150 year anniversary of JD (hence 150 made)

When they first announced the 2017 JD bike this past Spring, the Knoxville dealer had one promised that remained unspoken for about a month then somebody jumped.

More pictures would be nice, Don.... :2vrolijk_21:

Knoxville got Jack Daniels #70, it lasted two days.

They are suppose to get two of the Roadmaster Elite's.  I am most likely going to test ride a Roadmaster when I get home.  If I love the ride, I will seriously consider putting a deposit down for the Roadmaster elite.

Comes complete with the granny armrest. I did notice they were pretty quick in the video to point out that the paint for their Elite bike is done in house. Damn nice bike for sure. But I still wonder how long the name will be around this time.

My local Indian dealers service department is made up of all Harley service Tech's. I take my bike there for all my service, there prices are about 75 to 80% Of my local HD dealer. Bottom line, the last time I had fluids and tires done, they offered me a Chieftain for the night as a loaner! I could not believe that!
The head tech is a great tuner,  and believe it or not 9 out of 10 bikes I see in there for a tune are Harley's,  just saying!

With all the bashing of incompetent techs on this site, are you sure you want them working on yours instead of an Independent? After all, what seems like most people believe are that there no good techs out there working at dealers.  ::) :beatdeadhorse:

I took my Streetglide in for the 10,000 service last week and they own the Indian dealer about 1/4 mile away. They offered me a Roadmaster for the day (they have been trying to sell me one for a year) which I did not take but I did go for about a 20 mile ride. I agree the balance of the bike was great but my riding style has me a bit further up on the revs then most and I really thought the bike fell hard up there. I did like the entertainment functionality but personally for me didn't car for the "plasticky' looks of the system or dash. To be fair I have the stage 3 on my Streetglide and cat removed with TTS tune and guy told me up front I probably wouldn't care for the performance stock. I do think my Streetglide M8 stock 114 ran much better thought than the 111.
Overall for a bike that has only been out for a couple of years I do think it is a nice bike with potential and I would consider if they made some styling changes to the fairing and dash.
Interesting fact-in July they sold 118 Harleys at Biggs HD and 22 Indians at North County Indian. There are twice as many Harley dealers in San Diego County as Indian dealers so they still have "a hill to climb" even with Harley numbers dropping

Mike,  the Harley techs at this Indian dealer worked at the head techs independent shop. It's a long story, but his shop was in a pole barn behind
his house and the neighbors started to complain. The owner of the Indian dealer offered him the job as head,  so he moved his business in.

Funny stuff here  :huepfenlol2: any shop besides genuine certified HD dealers will be under the sanctions the MOCO has put into effect to protect their proprietary stance. Sure the simple fluid changes and what not is not affected, but try and buy a part needed to fix other problems, waivers and small print is abundant in shopping online.

I think the new M8 engine is for that very reason also, the twin cam patents will be public sooner than later.  :nixweiss:

Having purchased a RM 18 mos. ago, you'll love the ride and handling.  For my height and size, it seems the bike was made for me.  It'll heat up like a 110, so plan on a fuel controller/PowerVision CX to address that.  Cat removal or Fuel Moto Jackpot header if you want.  Mine doesn't have the Ride Command, but according to reports, it works well, with no snafus.

Regarding the post about Indian staying around - their sales continue to go north and the parent company is a multi-billion dollar operation.  They're doing a good job, so I think they're here for the long haul.

Of course if something doesn't sell, a company will drop that product.  Whether HD or Polaris, low sales will dictate direction.  There's a reason HD quit making the RK Classic, Springers, and soon the V-Rod.  But that's not what we're seeing with Indian.  They're making a good product with climbing sales.  I can find no fault in that.

Victories best sales year was 2012.  The Victory could not pass 2020 CARB, so they decided not to spend the $$$ to make a compliant motor.
BTW, I traded my 2014 SG for the Chieftain Elite in June once I saw the new front fender.  IMHO, after 7 HDs 2 CVOs) this is by far the best ride as far as suspension, navigation, vibration, etc.

Actually stopped at the local Polaris dealer today to inquire about the RM Elite. $8k premium over the regular RM and it's all cosmetic from what I was told.  Pretty hefty price for paint and a few other pieces.

$14k difference between SGS and CVO SG.  Other than 10 cubic inches, the rest is cosmetic too.

The Polaris gets two more speakers and shiny stuff. Not even different wheels.

Almost pulled the trigger at the dealership located in Little Italy, San Diego. They were dealing, but could not find a bagger with a wet motor and frame mounted fairing. Great company and products, I can wait.

0% for 72 months financing on 2017 Chieftains OR 4 years of warranty (2 basic, 2 extended).  Blurb from the website:
"0% APR for 72 months OR 4-year warranty (2-year warranty + 2-year ESC) OR $1500 Trade-in on the purchase of a new 2017 Chieftain Classic, Chieftain Limited & Chieftain Dark Horse Indian Motorcycle. Offer valid December 1, 2017 – December 31, 2017."

...come on in, fellers, the water is fine.... ;D

Their dealer network must be stuck with too many Chieftans.  Not enough room for the 18s, so it's Indianthon, like Toyatahon except on 2 wheels.

Or they are benevolent, caring manufacturers, trying to do good for the biking world by taking a hit in the shorts on profits to make their customers a bit more prosperous.

One of the 2.   ;)

Sure. The third option - Aliens from Outer Space run the company & the decision to reduce profits was random - has already been ruled out.

I'm speculating they're just trying to move the last '17s off the floor, while at the same time, trying to chip-away at HDs customers.  IM has always been willing to offer discounts, insentive financing, etc. vs HD, which seems to resist offering corporate level discounting, low financing, etc.

As I have posted before my dealer also owns the Indian store about 100 yards away. Last Saturday I had a friend pick me up at the HD store for lunch while I had a oil change done. He knows nothing about motorcycles and commented "wow, the Harley store looks alive while the Indian store looks like they are going out of business".

I agree with your observations. The company that controls 50% of domestic bike sales will have more activity at their store.  IM has what, 5%?  I’d compare your observations to going in a Chevy dealer on a Saturday and then going to the Aston Martin dealer...obviously the manufacturer with the largest market share will be busier.

I agree Mark, thats what I think when I read Harleys market share dropping because of Indian's growing-same thing as reading Chevy market share dropping because Aston's share is growing. Everything is relative

I would guess the busiest part of an HD store is the shop.  :huepfenjump3:

New Chieftain Elite to be released today, March 1.  Knoxville Indian has one for viewing if you are in the area.  Supposed to be limited number of the hand painted (in house at the Spearfish plant, by the way....are you listening HD?) silver.  Limited to 350 units similar to the red Chieftain Elite they did in '17.

I like the red they did last year - but this is a cool paint job too.  This is what CVO paint used to look like.  Like you said, custom paint done in-house, not contracted out.

Saw it in person late yesterday. Pictures don't show the bike well. In person and in the sun, it looks like a rolling disco ball...that thing is SPARKLY!  If you enjoy bling, you will love it.
