Title: Have 2014 CVO Limited sales hit a wall?
Post by: WildClyde on April 20, 2014, 11:51:02 AM
My dealer, Dudley Perkins HD of SF, has two 2014 CVO Limited bikes on the showroom floor: a burgundy blaze/typhoon maroon one and a jupiter blue/wicked sapphire one. The blue one has been on the floor for over a month.

Is it just that it is tax time? Or is there price resistance at $45K out the door.

The BMW MC dealer is selling all the high end bikes it can get.

Time of year (as you mention tax time/beginning of riding season in some areas), also some may be waiting on MY 2015 bikes too. :nixweiss:

$45K??

Seems inflated maybe that's the reason.

If he's asking 45K for his bikes, that is the problem.  There is NO way I would ever pay anything over MSRP for a bike.  I guess he is waiting on the uninformed buyer to walk in who doesn't know any better.

In his OP he said 45k >OTD<, not the asking price.

The motor company is building a lot of touring bikes right now. My local dealer is loaded up with ultra Limited models and a couple CVO Limited's. Harley really rampted up for 2014.

$45K out the door still don't make sense. Price is inflated. Run away!!

I guess it could be, I don't know what taxes that they add on there. 7 or 8% here I believe.

Sales tax here's 6.5% plus about $150 for registration fees. So the price seems way to high to me. Even if I add in the insurance cost...

SF is at least 8.75% sales tax and the licensing fees are some of the highest in the nation.  Generally speaking, you have to add at least 10% to the purchase price for tax/licensing.  So, for a $40k selling price that otd price seems about right.

Those are some high fees for sure. Is the registration fee one time or do you have to renew and pay again every year or two?

The SF sales tax is $3,412 (@8.75%). The registration is $347 paid yearly with the first payment due at purchase. The rest has to be shipping to the West Coast, "handling", and a dealership "doc" fee. I'll take a picture of the sales price card the next time I'm at the dealership.

MSRP is $38,999 and freight is $435.  The freight is the same no matter where they ship the bike in the USA, it's an average figure based on the entire country.  The guys who live two blocks down the street from the assembly plant pay the same freight as the guys on the other side of the country.

$38,999.00  +  435.00  =  $39,434.00

$39,434.00  X  .0875    =      3450.48   SF Sales Tax

                                         347.00    CA Registration

          TOTAL  OTD     =  $43,231.48

Any other charges from the dealership are bogus add-ons.  For instance, prep and doc fees.  The only prep is what Harley already pays them to do, like uncrate the bike, install or relocate certain items, install the Maxi fuse, etc..  There is a checklist Harley requires them to fill out, and Harley allows them approximately two hours for this "prep".  Any prep charges added on by the dealer are purely additional profit, on top of the 20% margin already built in to the MSRP.

Saw a couple at Appletons HD in Clarksville TN this weekend. They appeared to be about $2k over list and surprising were not even advertised on their inventory site.  Getting close to time of year they are going to have to get to MSRP or lower.

This one has been on the K'ville HD store for about a month now.....thing is, however, there are a couple new CVO limiteds at SMHD in Maryville, TN too.  Have been there for about the same length of time and around the same pricing.

My guess?  Folks are finding it hard to pass up the $28,000 '14 Limited to pay $40K for a CVO.  Past years, this might not have been so much of an issue but the '14 Limited really has quite a lot "stock" for that $28K....

Part of what we are seeing is a result of the dealership reduction. In the Greater Sacramento market we went from 6 stores to 2. I would guess that this would mean more bikes for the surviving dealerships. The added volume will help the survivers bottom line while taking some of the pressure off prices. Higher volume should lead to greater flexibility.

          TOTAL  OTD     =  $43,231.48

Thanks Jerry!

Here is the actual DPCHD price card:
CVO Limited               $38,999.00
CA Emissions                 $200.00
Dealer Prep                 $1595.00
Freight                      $435.00
Doc                           $65.00
DMV                          $361.00
Sales Tax                   $3716.46
Total OTD                 $45,371.46

My teachable moments:
- dealer markup built into the MSRP is 20% - didn't know that
- Dealer Prep is another way of inflating the price
- Calif. is an expensive state to purchase
- this may be a buyer's market due to multiple reports of multiple CVO Limited on showroom floors.

Buyer doesn't necessarily have to pay that just because the dealer is asking for it.

That $1595.00 would explain the high "out the door" pricing  ::)

I also seem to remember reading something about Harley no longer adding a separate charge for California emissions.  It's no longer listed on their spec and pricing page like it was in years past.

Anyhow, I guess whether this sort of pricing by dealers is honest or dishonest is up to each person to decide.  IMHO if a dealer was truly honest and wanted more for the bike than MSRP, the honest way to do that would be to just add an additional item on his pricing placard labeled "Additional Dealer Markup".  I've seen that many times on car dealer's lots when they had a hot new model.  But trying to make customers believe they actually do $1595 worth of "prep" work on your new motorcycle is total BS.

The best approach is to walk into any dealership with all the facts in hand and never take what they post on the bikes or tell you as gospel.  If I were in the market for a $40k Harley, which I'm definitely not, you can rest assured I'd walk in knowing exactly what MSRP and freight were and that would be the maximum I'd consider paying (taxes and registration fees not included of course).  If the dealer thinks it's worth more, then he is welcome to try to get it from some other rube but he won't get it from me.

Maybe he could be real honest and call it "The owner just trying to make a buck $1,595.00 Profit Fee".

When a wife says she saw you with another woman and asks "did you sleep wth her?", you can honestly say no. You weren't "sleeping" right?

Gotta love dishonest, oops I mean deceptive, business practices.

Deceptive or just plain old "Marketing" as some people in the business world call it.

I believe HD is steering the demand toward the main product lines like has been noted in this thread earlier. It makes sense, the Limited's have a lot of accessories already and at a  price point the masses would even consider. It was apparent at the last Dealer I was at where they had Limited's with minor mods selling at a premium. Again they were marketing loaded Street Glides at $30K which several were sold in a one week period. All they did was add a stage 1 kit, Rienhart mufflers, SE breather, chrome wheels, and in a couple of cases custom paint from the factory, picture below of one of the Street Glides.

I dont have any way to verify these numbers but the attached web site lists dealer cost on a Limited to be $31,200 US so they are already getting $7800 for prep, overhead and profit included in list.

Ron, $31,200 is 80% of $38,999 confirming Jerry's point that 20% of MSRP is for the dealer.

I have developed a desire for the silver/orange one and the one coming in to SMHD is pre sold. They have one coning into Coloboch in Morristown and there are two guys in front of me to even see the bike. The Road kings and Softails are sitting everywhere and the most expensive one(Limited) sells first. :o

They both seem to be asking MSRP+$800+ tax and registration.

Heard an unexpected opinion from a local dealer last week on marketing a CVO Limited.  Our local dealer in Clarksville has a Red Limited on the floor thats been there a couple of weeks.  I had noticed it not on his internet inventory site and thought he's just not keeping site updated.  Last week I was in there eyeing the bike and owner walks up and asks how I like it.  During conversation I mentioned to him I noticed it was not on his web site.  He responds he does that on purpose as he does not want out of state customers buying the CVO Limiteds and prefers to sell them to local customers.  What dealer would not want to turn over sales on a $40,000 bike instead of holding it?  Thought this was an unusual attitude.
