Steve will the heads that you are and have been building for your113's need any changes for the 117's or is that something that will have to be tweaked as the builds accumulate?

I am fascinated with the premise of bumping displacement with a bolt-on kit while doing a head swap.  I am only considering the piston and cylinder kit, as I already have the heads, cams and intake covered.

However, my engine builder with 35+ years of experience thinks this kit is terrible idea!  The reason he cited for his disapproval was “the spigots are longer so the pistons don’t fall out the bottom and a larger dia. Those slipper skirt pistons with the no tension oil rings are questionable also, I don’t use them.”  I understand what slipper skirt pistons are, but I do not really understand what “no tension oil rings” are.

Personally, I wondered more about the steel liners inside cast iron jugs and all the related issues therein.  I definitely am not interested in doing anything that compromises reliability or longevity of 4,500 mile engine.

Can anyone with first-hand technical experience with this kit confirm or deny anything my engine builder is saying who has not laid hands on this kit yet?  I know people have strong opinions here about Screamin Eagle cylinders and possibly Screamin Eagle pistons, but is my engine builder correct?  Are the pistons in this kit inferior (slipper skirt with no tension oil rings) to stock 110 CI pistons.  Are the spigots longer or larger diameter?  Any other concerns with steel liners and everything getting real thin?  Ie cooling, gasket sealing, etc

Thanks In Advance,

I think Steve will give us his opinion of the kit once he gets his hands on it for the build he is doing and answer any questions we have.

If I built engines for a living I might think it a terrible idea too. A lot less $$ involved = no engine removal, case boring which usually involves a Timken conversion as well.  a lot of labor saved with a drop in kit. If it proves reliable, a game changer for sure.

There have been a lot of changes in what is being offered as far as piston rings. Rings are getting thinner & they are not the same rings that were being used 5-10'years ago. I think they have a winning combination. Time will tell.

Well, I think I am just going to have to go for it and try to get my engine builder behind it.  His responses through multiple communications are incoherent, because I think he has had zero exposure to these “drop on” kits with steel liners that allow a no case mod installation.

1.   At least from the catalog pictures of this kit, these do not appear to be the extended skirt piston type he disapproves of.
2.   I do not think the rings in this kit are the “no tension” type, he disapproves of.
3.   The spigots are no longer than stock that he disapproved of.
4.   The pistons cannot “fall out the bottom”.
5.   The spigots are not larger diameter.

All of my builder’s disapprovals indicate his is thinking of an old school 113ci conversion kit that required boring the case.

Hopefully, I can get enough of his support on the 117 bolt-on kit to check over the cylinders and rings specs carefully as he installs.  It is never good to go against the recommendations of you builder, but I think in this case it is warranted.  Maybe I’ll make a convert out of him.   :)

This I believe is a reason for a lot of the skepticism on the forums, some will loose income. We the consumers will spend less. :2vrolijk_21:
