2015 FLHXSE Water Pump failurei
« on: July 20, 2017, 11:33:44 PM »

Anyone else experience a water pump failure on a 2015 HD twin-cooled engine? Right at 12,000 miles and mine had to be replaced due to failure on a road trip to Colorado.

Yes, mine failed around 20,000.  I was coming back from NYC trip and got the high temperature light while riding through a rain storm.

At the time it took the dealer 2 weeks to get a new water pump.  Words from the dealership was this was a faulty part that had been failing and thus the longer wait time to get a new pump.

Hopefully you don't have to wait as long now to get it replaced.

Seems to be common and the pumps were backordered to add insult to injury. I know of a few that lost the 30+ pounds and became air cooled.

Over on HarleyTechTalk they have two threads going on this issue. The consensus is that the coolant is gumming up the water pump impeller causing failure. I would order and carry a backup for long trips.

Consider different coolant in a percentage with enough protection from freezing and the rest distilled water. I don't know what HD uses but Dexcool has a reputation for this.

Did these owners just live with all the codes thrown when the monitored systems were no longer present?  Or was there a way found to program that monitoring out?

As a follow up to my post about replacing my pump.  I am now over 52,000 miles and no problems with this pump.

Google says its Dexcool.  I agree, get rid of that stuff, has a reputation of ruining everything it touches (radiators, heater cores, fills blocks) on cars/trucks.  Put the green stuff in, that worked for decades without a problem.

Worked for 12 years at a plant that made Antifreeze, both finished product and raw stock. Sold by the train car full. Guys, very little difference in brands, very little. Some of the biggest differences is dye (color of finished product). Mostly it is water and glycol, then you add more water at the customer level to raise to 50/50. I still to this day buy straight antifreeze and then mix it to 50/50 prior to pouring it in the system and I use a paint filter, faithfully while pouring it in.
Remember this stuff is made by a bunch of guys like us that work swing shift, 24/365 with 7 days straight @ 8/day and if your relief does not show for his shift, you stay another 8 hours then 2 days off. Just imagine 4:30 sunday morning and you are mixing a train car size load and it is snowing/raining and you are outside on top of the car? Imagine.

Mine failed on a trip to Nova Scotia this past week. Does anyone know the Harley part number for the water pump?

P/N  26600012
PUMP COOLANT
$439.88   MSRP

Edit:   Btw, you can save about $100 buying it from an online discount dealership like Boardtracker.  $341 plus free shippng, see attachment.  Only thing I don't know is if they are readily available.  Not too long ago they were on backorder.

My 2015 pump went out at 15K. My riding buddy same bike, same trip, went out at 12K. We rode them home over 300 miles on Sunday with our give a chit meter at a all time low.
I got the pump from Surdyke at $329.91 No mention of back order problems.
An example of Harley mark up:
Oetiker  HD10344 Hose clamp $4.15 each.
Oetiker same clamp on Amazon $7.10 for 10 pack.

Had a second water pump failure.  This time just before reaching 85,000.  Was going through Wyoming headed for Sturgis.  Thankfully HD in Gilettee, WY was stocked and ready.  In and out of the dealership in less than 2 hours.

Due to the horrifying stories over on HD forums, although I've not had my pump fail yet, I changed the coolant to Evans Waterless Coolant, which has done a good job in my Escort Cosworth for a few years.  Been fine, not yet failed, but keeping my fingers crossed.

You were lucky. A few years back one of our group needed fixed and was towed there. They said 2 weeks so he bought an old truck and drove on with bike in back.
