2017 cvo limited rotors
« on: August 14, 2018, 02:22:06 PM »

Bike had both front rotors and pads replaced at 4K miles due to warped rotors, right side was way worse than left side (linked , abs system)
Bike now has 8k miles on it a month later, same problem.
Am I to expect changing front rotors every 4K miles??
Yes I’ve had recent bikes same model, same brakes never had that issue.
Only thing I can think of is defective wheel.
Any suggestions?
TIA

They in fact had similar problems several years ago due to defective wheels, so that's a definite possibility.  The wheel can be checked for lateral runout at the rotor mounting points, which is where the problem was on those older wheels.

Thanks for the input
I had a chance to do a quick dial check on both rotors and the mounting posts
Right rotor is 20 thou out, mounting posts on the wheel shows one lug a little higher than the others.
Other thing I noticed with wheel in the air is how much the brakes drag, may be a contributing factor of heat on the rotor.
Right pads pretty worn compared to left pads and the left rotor actually gets more use than the right (linked brakes)
JMHO, we’ll see what the “master tech” at the dealer comes up with.

Latest update after the third rotor, I finally had the tech check the wheel mounting posts at the rotor attach points. You would assume they would check runout before AND after the repairs?
And, no my tire is not cupped, and no one hit all 3 rotors with a hammer, and I don’t ride the brake, etc, etc!
4 miles on the last rotor and 20 thou out when I checked at home, customer to service writer to tech doing the work always seem to lose something in the communication.
Had a nice talk with the GM at the dealership reminding him of the lemon laws in CA and also about the lack of communication in their service dept.
I think he got my concerns.

Warranty wheel from Harley at least 2 weeks out. MAY find a wheel at another dealer.

I’m not real happy with the “dealer experience “ for a $40+Cvo

I’m not even going to bring up my other bike! That topic will go on another post.

Harley sent me a survey form that I haven’t sent in yet pending the outcome of the latest repairs.

My new limited now needs a front wheel.
Last week I was informed it was 2 weeks from Harley, another wheel was located in Iowa or someplace in Midwest?
Today’s latest update is wheel is coming from Australia! An due here on September 7
I guess this is a pretty rare wheel?!?

Lemon law is looking better by the week IMO

Aren't you glad these are "American-made" bikes?   ;)
Australia seems like a strange place to keep parts for a '17.  Maybe HD had to replace so many of these wheels, they used all the ones here.
Hope the new one doesn't have the same problem.

New wheel, bearings, spacer, one new rotor, one used rotor, new bolts, washers, old tire (10k miles)
Old brake pads.
We’ll see if it works tomorrow on a long ride. No BSR this time!

Fingers crossed

My ‘14 CVO Limited had the right front rotor replaced at somewhere around 3500 miles. Never gave a thought about the mounting points would cause it. Makes perfect sense though.
Traded it on a ‘17 CVO Streetglide. So I’ll never know if or whaT caused it.
A close friend of mine just bought a new (18) Roadglide. Not a CVO. Traded his Ultra in because he too had both front rotors replaced twice. So this may not just be a CVO thing.

Australia was a big supplier of cast aluminum wheels for FoMoCo as well when I worked for them.  It used to drive me nuts because they were shipped to the US on cargo ships, which wasn't always the most dependable method in a "just-in-time" assembly plant.  It also meant any defects found at the assembly plant triggered a need to inspect all the stuff in that long supply line, negating another advantage of just-in-time manufacturing.

Update:
New wheel assembly seems to be working fine.
Tire still has some tread left on it so I’m saving up $550 for both tires in a month or so
I’m getting 15000-18000 on the American Elites, not as much on the oem
Checked run out on both rotors: looks like .002 on both, I can live with that.
Tech that did the job is old school and said he checked everything.
Did about 500 miles since Friday
No issues so far, fingers crossed.
