Duracell is Finally Here! (was New FLHTCUSE3 in Pennsylvania)
« on: September 23, 2007, 10:08:36 PM »

Hi all,

I am new here but I have already posted a question.  My new anniversary FLHTCUSE3 is supposed to arrive at the dealer on 17 October.  Cool looking bike, I just couldn't bring myself to get a BMW (even though I could have bought 2 of them for what the Harley cost). A bike should look and sound like a bike, not a UFO.  I could not bring myself to even test drive a Gold Wing; a bike should not look and feel like a modernistic couch either.

The dealer (Appalachian HD) has a special if you order $1000 worth of accessories so I went for that too. I ordered the Harley HID lights (I am used to having 2 headlights on my FLTRI).  I was then going to get the Kuryakyn Panacea tail light and turn signals (like I have on my FLTRI) but the dealer could not guarantee that they would work with a 2008 bike. Then I was going to get the Stage 1 air intake kit and the race tuner, but that would have required changing the cool looking Screamin' Eagle air filter cover to a generic one I have never even seen (Air Cleaner Cover P/N 29121-07). Without the Stage 1 kit there is no present need for a race tuner for my bike.

To get to the $1000 level the salesman and technicians then suggested that I get the Screamin' Eagle® Street Performance Mufflers that are supposed to have just come out for the FLHTCUSE3.  I don't want really loud pipes and I was assured that these would be deeper toned than the stock exhaust and be a little better flowing but not much louder than stock.  I was also told that these are not so different from stock that they require a race tuner.  I was told that I would see a mild performance increase (since I will never ride the bike before they are put on I would have nothing to compare to).  Doesn't the FLHTCUSE3 come with high performance pipes to begin with?  I hope I am not wasting money just to hit the $1000 mark.

I hope I am happy with my bike and my add-ons.  I hate buying something that I have never ridden, or even seen in person.  I'll post my initial impression of my bike when it arrives! Wish me luck.

P.S. Thanks for the great web resource!

Megavolt,
You can change the backplate (HD part #???) on the A/C to increase air flow and keep the SE A/C cover.
Don't know about the slip-on's you mentioned.  I went with the V&H Big Shot duals and then switched out the baffles > went to the quite baffles.  If you don't want loud, this set-up is probably still too loud for you.  You probably would think the Rineharts are too loud also.
I would still suggest that you get the SERT (or PC or TMax) and have the bike dyno-tuned.  Factory set-up is going to be too lean... and you will most likely notice a marked improvement in performance after having the bike dyno-tuned.

I hope your new scooter arrives on time or better yet, early.  Post a pic when you get it.

Hi Megavolt,
I replaced my stock mufflers a couple weeks ago with SE Pro Performance slip ons.  I have 5,200 miles on the bike.  I took it around the block to see if there was any popping or check engine light at first.  Since then I've put about 700 miles on and it runs absolutely fine.  I'll replace the breather and have it tuned in the spring.  It's louder than I thought it would be.  More of a good rumble.  I like it.  I received several complements on the sounds over the weekend.  There are a lot of threads here about members looking for an exhaust that is more "Harley" sounding than stock.  For them, it seems that the D&D Police Interceptors are a popular choice.

Oh yeah, welcome aboard from Western NY.  :cherry:

Welcome to the CVO site..........hope your bike comes in early........enjoy the ride. I went with the D&D FatCats, but I like it reasonably loud. I also had the SERT installed along with the high flow AC and it made a huge difference in the performance.

Welcome Megavolt,

Try this thread for info on the A/Ccover.

http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=16173.0

I followed Mr. Magoo's advice and have the stock A/C cover on with the high flow A/C back plate and filter.  Just used two rubber hose washers with a metal washer in between to make a 1/4" spacer.

I Haven't changed the pipes so can't comment on that, but if you do maybe I'll run into you somewhere here in PA (I'm 50 miles north east of Appalachian in Sch County) so I can hear them.  I like a quite bike but would like a deeper tone if I could accomplish it.  I've heard alot of the popular after market systems everyone on here likes and they're too loud for me.

Good Luck with the Bad Motor Scooter,
J-Carr

I ordered the parts for the "Roll Your Own" SE Air Cleaner listed by Jerre at http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php/topic,5725.0/all.html . The dealer will install the air cleaner parts, the Screamin' Eagle® Street Performance Touring Mufflers, SERT and set it all up before I pick up the bike (18 days!).

I'm spending $$$ on top of the already obscene price of the bike, and I haven't even seen it yet! (My wife thinks I only went to the dealer today to pick up a quart of oil for my present bike)

Just some friendly advise, but don't ask me how I found out. ;) When you order parts from your dealer or anybody else give them your cell phone number to contact you and not your home number. :nervous: That way when they call to let you know that your parts are in they will speak to you. :2vrolijk_21: The OCD has just begun. :huepfenlol2:

Wish I had thought of that when I ordered the parts!

I plan to roll the cost of the bike + tax + add ons + labor + extended warranty into one big check when I pick up the bike.  I am hoping that if they itemize the sales receipt my wife does NOT LOOK TOO CLOSELY AT IT!!!

That works with most women I have known, but whenever I have told my wife I saved a certain amount of $$$ or a certain % of money by getting something on sale she replies, "Think how much you would have saved if you didn't buy it at all".  I must have found the only logical woman on the planet!   8)

With the CVO she has pretty much given me free reign, or at least she is not looking too closely at what I am doing. I told her the bike is my mid-life crisis, and cheaper than having an affair (and subsequent divorce).  I ordered it 17 September (my birthday).  I doubt this tactic will work on future birthdays, but only time will tell!    :coolblue:

The arrival date for my bike of 17 October 2007 has been changed to 25 October.  No VIN number yet so who really knows.  I have read horror stories here about bikes being canceled and delayed for months so if it really is only for another week that is not too bad... Maybe they will sort out all the leaks and heat related problems before my bike is made.

I will (try to) avoid going to the dealer between now and when the bike comes in to pick it up.  Too many nice things there that I didn't even know I needed.

A big CVO howdy from Texas. Hope the scoot arrives PDQ. BTW you don't have to go to the dealership to find all kinds of goodies, just look back on some of the threads here. $1000.00 You'll need Just A Little Bit Extra My Friend. That's part of the fun, transforming it into your bike.

The estimated arrival date of 17 October was changed to 25 October - as of today (25 October) still no bike, and still no VIN number.  The dealer feels it will likely come next week but that's what they said on the 17th too.

I found out that I will be TDY to Alaska 11 November to mid December so if it is delayed more a couple more weeks the dealer will have to keep it until I return.

If patience is a virtue I guess I'm not too virtuous today. :nervous:

Congrats on your new bike! I work for a local Harley shop and one of my customers turned me on to this cite. I own an 07 SERK and he just bought the 08- so as we got to talking he told me about this forum and all the good information that has helped him so far. As to your muffler question- you do not need a race tuner for the SE mufflers- however if you plan to do anything else motor wise down the road you will. In my honest opinion-the SE mufflers are a waste of money. They are only 3 decibals louder and gain minimal performance. Many of my customers who purchase these mufflers have been disappointed and feel they wasted money for the outcome they received. I understand you don't want too loud- I'll put some thought and do some looking into what kind of mufflers will give you a nice rumble without getting too obnoxious. Be in touch.

3 November, still no word on my bike.  I don't think the dealer would ever get this many deposits, but imagine if you could get a $500 deposit from a hundred people.  $50,000 in the bank earning interest.  At 5% interest that would be $2,500 free money.

Now imagine if you were dishonest, you could discount bikes and take lots of orders with down payments.  Then you leave for some nice tropical location...

I go to Alaska for 5 weeks on 11 November.  Want to make bets that my bike arrives on 12 November?

On the dealers paper work my bike is scheduled for 16 Nov. The sales manager has told me from the beginning that they were running about 3 weeks behind and not to expect it until Dec. Nothing would make me happier than get a call in 2 weeks saying it was in. Every nice weather day that we get is one day I could be riding the thing. My wife has been on board with this thing the entire time. A good thing since I have traded her bike in on it. Then again she hasn't ridden it since Jun 06.

Hopefully yours will get in before your TDY. Best of Luck!

I'm about 15-20 minutes from Appalachian HD.  I used to be a little closer until they moved.  Come to think of it Seacoast HD in New Hampshire moved about 1.5 miles further from me when I used to live in New England.  Perhaps I need to clean my leathers?

I'd like to get together for a ride sometime.  Likely we'll have to wait until spring to do so.

Hey there from Syracuse ! I'm sorry for your frustration in the delay of your new cycle- and no one understands more than I do seeing as though I work for an HD dealer in sales. Production is more disorganized and backed up this year than in many, many years. I'm sure your dealer has no intention of jerking you around but all he can do is keep you updated to new planned ship date that HD gives to them. We had our entire December order of 35 bikes cancelled because they cannot make up production. If I were you, I would confirm that your bike did not get cancelled - our CVO orders have gone back and forth also and they're not giving dealers as many as they did last year- and just make sure your bike is still slated for build and ask them to lookup what status the bike is in and I can tell you what that means- scheduled, reserved, invoiced etc... The bike is completely worth the wait and hopefully you get a break here soon !! Let me know how you make out and if there's any way I can help out.

I am back from Alaska and my bike is in!  It just needs to be detailed otherwise it is set to go.  As you probably can see from my signature I could not help but add a few more things to my bike while I was waiting for it to arrive...  Once it is in my garage I will think more of riding it and less about what else would be cool to add to it.

It is supposed to be 40-42 the next 2 days (and I am off) before we get more snow.  Most of the recent ice has melted off the trees, grass, etc. so I might pick it up tomorrow or Wednesday rather than have the dealer deliver it.  At least that way I will get a 15 mile ride on it before snow comes for good.

I got a digital camera on Black Friday so I hope to have photos to upload shortly!  The HID headlight (blue) really stands out against the halogen (yellowish) fog lights.  The Küryakyn smoked LED turn signals and tail lights look like they should have come with the bike from the start.  Add the Harley LED Windshield Molding and I think it will be visible from space!

I like the look and sound of the Screamin' Eagle Street Performance Touring Mufflers!  A bit louder than the stock pipes and a real punch when you turn the throttle, but not obnoxiously loud.  I ought to still be able to hear the radio unless I am passing someone.  They have a really deep/open sound to them.  They sound a bit like the Rineharts that were on a 2008 Street Glide I test drove but not nearly as loud.

Not sure if this is the right place, but here are some attempts at uploading pictures of my new bike!  What torque compared to my 1998 Road Glide!  The dealer told me to take it easy on acceleration during the break-in period and I almost popped a wheelie in the parking lot.

The seat was nice and toasty, but the hand grips were not very warm even on the highest setting.  Not sure if that is the way they are or if it was just so cold today that I could not feel much heat through my gloves.

You got that right, We have been calling the 105th bike duracell's for a while. Who was your salesman? My wife is miss Appalachian. so if you are there all the time we might have met already.  I am up against it with the tuner also since I have done several stock bikes at my shop with out doing the tuner and just used torque cones with pipes and still am getting 50 mpg. But all of the CVO bikes have lean tune from factory, so I think you will have to tune it for the over heating to not happen.

My salesman was Don Rutledge, I forget the name of the person who sat with me for the chroming session.  The all were incredibly helpful and not pushy at all on making the sale or adding stuff to the bike afterwards.  The only down side was that I did not get as much for my trade in (1998 Road Glide) as I was hoping.

My bike is supposed to be set up for pipes and the "roll your own air cleaner" I was able to make thanks to Jerry's kind posting.  I'll have to wait until 500 miles before I can have it Dyno tuned.  Don't think there is much chance of that until spring gets here.

Over all the bike turned out better than I had even hoped for!  Everything looks like it belongs on the bike from the HID headlight to the Küryakyn LED lights.  I love the sound (and look) of the mufflers!

CONGRATS ON THE NEW BIKE!
I picked mine up in November and ever since weather has been horrible in southeastern PA.
The Kuryakyn lights worked?  My dealer was not sure they would with the electrical system on 08's.
If I ever get to ride again, I need to break in (only have 30 miles on bike) and see what pipes and tuner to put on next. very anxious to get out, but nothing but cold rain and snow and salt. Do not want to ride that bad yet!

The Kuryakyn lights worked?

No problems with them.  Appalachian was not certain about the Küryakyn lights but an email from Küryakyn stated they worked fine on the 08 because basically the set up was the same as 07.

The only inconvenience is that Appalachian was not able to hook up the Illuminated LED Windshield Molding Kit so that the outer LED bars worked as turn signals.  They said that no matter how many resisters they used when the kit LEDs would flash the opposite side Küryakyn turn signal would dim a bit, which might be confusing.

They felt it was "not drawing enough current".  I think that with the added draw of an additional set of LEDs it was drawing too much current.  I wonder if they had used FEWER resistors in order to drawn less current if it would have worked...  Oh well, at least it is a nice looking chrome trim with 4 running lights.

I really like the look of the lighted fairing trim and was going to add that to mine.  I'm luke warm at best on the outer ones flashing as turn signals though.  Is there a way to make it like your out of the box?

They can hook up the outer LED sections to be directionals, or to be always on.  Mine are always on and to be honest I was going to see how they looked as additional directionals and if they were "too much" I might have ended up making them all running lights anyway.

I really like the look of the Küryakyn directionals.  I recently saw a bike with the bullet lights and the stock smoked lenses and compared it to the smoked Küryakyn directionals on my bike.  The chrome ring surrounding the lens makes it look more like the bike's headlight with the chrome ring.  I like the way they show light from the sides too so there is no blind spot.  They are probably not as bright from the side, but at least at night it is plenty easy to see them.

Maybe you can spend you money after you have had the bike for a while?  That way you can take your time to look at what options you may need, ride it and break it in "stock" and then have something to compare when you do change your set-up?  Also, for what its worth, my brother-in-law has the SE pipes and hasn't spoken very highly of them.

That's funny 'cause my mom had SC pipes installed on her 98' Heritage way back when and had to have them replaced relatively immediately due to bluing and other troubles; she ended up (of course) having V & H installed. Which, by the way, are great! I definitely believe that riding a bike stock is of great value to the rider because once you do get it altered you appreciate the changes all the better!

Only 300 miles on the bike, so it's too early to tell if the pipes will blue or rust.  I haven't even ridden through the rain yet, which is surprising with my usual weather related luck.  I like the sound, a bit louder and deeper than stock but not really loud unless I crank up the throttle.  Neighbors have commented on it being louder than my '98 Road Glide, but at least so far nobody has complained about it.

I rode a demo '07 Street Glide with V & H pipes and it hurt my ears.  There was no way to communicate with a passenger, or to hear the radio except at idle.  Perhaps the pipes had their baffles removed, or is that the way V & H pipes are?  It's hard to pick pipes because you don't know what they will sound like on your bike until you put them on (unless you know someone with the same pipes and a similar bike).

I had heard these SE pipes on an Ultra Classic (not CVO) and they sounded nice and deep and not much louder than stock, except during acceleration.  On my CVO bike they are definitely louder and deeper, but not annoyingly so.  If I stand behind the bike they are fairly loud, but riding the bike I can still listen to the radio or use the intercom.
