Puzzled with Traxxion adjuster screw
« on: February 10, 2009, 07:11:06 PM »

I'm having difficulties with the adjustment screws for my new AK-20 kit.  Before you tell me to contact the folks at Traxxion, I already spent considerable time talking to Mike (twice) and Martin.  Maybe I just couldn't explain my situation well enough to get an answer that made sense.  I ordered the kit and had it delivered to my dealer who installed the fork tubes.  The star shaped adjusting nut has an Allen set screw to hold it in place against a flattend area on the shaft.  I was never sent any instruction or paper work for tuning, other than the invoice.  I finally obtained some instructions and completed the final adjusting.  When I bottom the start nut and back it out 1 1/2 turns, the shaft that the start nut is attached to is very loose.  It's loose enough that I believe the settings will vibrate loose.  I'm puzzled and frustrated with the verbal instructions I received from Traxxion.  It is not the kind of service I had grown to expect.  For you guys who did your own install, do you guys remember if the shaft with the star adjusting nut was fairly loose?  I even called Jim aka(H-D Dude)  and he could not remember if it was tight or loose.  He recommended that I back it out and apply just a small amount of Locktite to keep it in place.

I don't want to over react, but once the nacelle cover is put on, it will be hard to reach.  I will put a mark on the location and keep an eye on it but I thought I would check with you guys.

I also have a set of Bitubo's that I purchased from them.

Thanks,

Ray G.

Wait and talk to Dan at Traxxion for the final say.

I installed mine my self.  Put the cap (knob) on, tightened the setscrew, turned all the way in (lightly seated), then backed out the required number of turns per Traxxion papers.  I remember that the knob/shaft turned very easy (like you weren't turning anything) and I too thought there wasn't enough resistance to keep the setting in place.  I (like you suggested) put a marker on the knob at 6 o clock to check at a future date.   Will have over 20K miles this year.  I have a SEEG and had the lower fairing cap off about a year ago and the knobs hadn't moved.  Hope this helps.  (mine go back to Traxxion next winter for tuneup).   You don't want to put any loctite down the shaft.

the required number of turns per Traxxion papers.

Seems like half of us got these instructions and half of us got nothing but the invoice

We do need to begin including some instructions with these.

The rebound is pre-set when we ship the forks out. When installing the forks, you just take the rebound adjuster knob off, install the forks, and reinstall the rebound knob, and tighten up the set screw. The baseline setting is 1 and 1/2 turns out from all the way in, but that is pre-set when we send the forks out.

The adjuster is easy to turn, but it is very unlikely that it would vibrate and enough to change the setting.

I wish I would have known my dealer could have installed my AK-20s I ordered last week from HD-Dude (Jim). He's 650 miles from my house and it will be a long drive just to put these in. From the Traxxion web site, it sounded like you needed very technical expertise and machining to install them. After I ordered them from HD Dude, he told me there's just a little grinding that needs done. Traxxion should pay HD Dude to have them shipped back to me and spend a few minutes on the phone with my HD service manager about the install details. I bet if Traxxion did this, they'd sell a lot of these (and Bitubos) in Salt Lake City. Our economy is strong and we have strong service technical expertise. I already have talked to a bunch of my friends that think they'd want this kit, but not if they have to take their forks off and send them to Traxxion or drive 700 miles to the nearest installer.

I'd have Jim do it! I would think he was cheaper than the dealer, and when you ask a dealer to do something out side their box it can be a crap shoot. You could make it into a nice trip! The ride home should be much better than the ride down.

In Ray's case, his dealer pulled his forks and sent them to us to install the AK20s.

We do not let just any dealer install our AK20s into the forks. We have seen some pretty messed up suspension work by dealers. Generally, our dealers are either shops that have been installing our suspension in race bikes for years, or the dealer has come to our shop for training.

We just want to make sure our AK20s are installed properly.
