Dash mount for Zumo 550...Is it possible on 2010 SE Ultra????
« on: August 09, 2009, 12:01:11 PM »

Has anyone mounted a Zumo on the dasy of their '09/'10 SE Ultra? The kit on the harley site says their fairing mount won't work with the SE Ultras that have a padded dash above the guages.

Has anyone figured out a permanent mount for their GPS on a '09/'10 SE Ultra other than a handlebar mount?

The Zumo on the Ultra fairing is the perfect location.  Not on the vibrating handle bars.

I have mine mounted on the handle bars (for over two years and three bikes) and my buddy's is on the fairing.  Much better.  Any way, you can remove the leather padded dash from the inner fairing.  It has two screws which would leave two holes (the fairing is painted).  One will be covered by the HD Zumo mount.  The other is a problem.  This assumes you can live without the padded dash.  When you sell the bike you can put the dash back in.

Still, what to do with the other hole.  Maybe some other add on gadget TPMS, radar or even a iPhone mount.

I was hoping someone had figured out to permanently mount the Zumo on the fairing AND keep the dash pad. I assume the '09 SE Ultra also had the dash pad and therefore somebody must have figured out how to mount their zumo without losing the padded dash.

There have been mentions of people taking the pad to an upholstery or leather ship to have it cut down and restitched to fit around the mount.

Heatwave, look at this link from zumoforums.  Gizmo did a very nice job on the Zumo 660 install on top of his dash, inside the windshield.

PS - There was no Dash modification necessary.   Scroll up and look at all of Gizmo's installation.

Here is the post from Zumo Forums...

This is where I mounted mine and it seems to work well.  When the bike is cold at idle I have some vibration but at about 1000 rpm's and above I really don't have any issues at all.

I have the Zumo Mic Interface installed so all the audio and mic support come from the Harley's audio/coms system.  I use Bluetooth on the Zumo to linkup with my iPhone.

I was already a member of Zumoforum so there was no problem with access. I was an early Zumo 550 owner and have used it since it first came out. I have all the HD poi's programmed as well as other interesting POIs like the high point of the 50 states and all the covered bridges in NH and eastern PA. I also use mine as an mp3 player with a 4gb card.

Its interesting if you read the thread that the guy that mounted his Zumo on the inside fairing above the pad, actually moved it later to the handlebar. Main issue was one of reach. I also wasn't that thrilled with the blocked view. I'm leaning more towards mounting on the left side of the handlebar but was interested in other ideas.

I did like the link http://home.comcast.net/~jbissonette1/site/ to the system for the mic interface between the Zumo and the HK radio. This interface system allows you to leave your phone plugged into power receptacle in the tourpak while synced to the Zumo via BT. With the Zumo connected through the HK aux input, you now have your phone connected to the intercom/cb and your wired headset. very neat.

Just installed a Dual-Seat BOMM last week and it works great.  Have the Zumo 550 with iPhone linked Bluetooth and the BOMM unit is installed under the fairing with Mic cable plugged into Zumo and the the Zumo audio out plugged into the Aux on my HK radio.  There are pros and cons, as it is not all Bluetooth, but I use a wired FF Arai helmet and it works.  Can't ask for too much more.

Would it be possible to take a picture of how your Zumo 550 is mounted on your SEUC and how you ran the wiring? with the power, mic and output wiring this could get somewhat messy on the very clean look of SE Ultra handlebars. Also did you use the stock abs mount or go to a chrome version? Pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Will get you some pictures.  I used the plastic Ram mount and the wire to the Aux port is exposed.  Will run it under the fairing when I remove it the next time. Wasn't to concerned about the looks as much as functionality.

Here are some more pictures of Zumo mounted on the handlebars - Standard GPS or Garmin - implementation starting at reply #11.

Fired00d, that Techmount is really nice.  Will probably convert to a nice chrome one later and will make it a little taller to keep from looking away from the road to check the GPS.  Is the one you have the 3.5" tall model?

This one...

Techmount 30997MC (these are for the stock handlebars (1") if you've changed yours you'll need to get one that corresponds to the diameter of your bars)

I use the Ram Mount Garmin delivered with the Zumo and had a polished steal mounting made to go with it:

Reason:

1. I want the Zumo as close as possible to the left controls so I don't have to change my position when operating it. 2. It has to stay out of my sight on road or mirrrors but as close to the left mirror as possible so I regularly check it together with the left mirror. 3. My handlebars shake significantly less than my fairing - don't know if that's true for everybody.

I don't have it plugged to the aux-jack because I don't use the H-D-headsets. Actually I'm quite happy with the H-K-sounds over speakers and nav/tel/intercom via bluetooth-headset. Power goes into handlebar.

Almost everybody I know who mounted the Zumo in center of cockpit first (for the looks) and really uses the device relocated it to the handlebar after a while  ;)

Thanks for taking the time to post the pics. Very helpful. As I suspected with the audio out, the mic in and the power it is a pretty "messy" look. I was hoping for a "cleaner" approach. Maybe power and the "mic" lines run from inside the fairing and along the bottom of the handlebar combined with the Zumo output under the handbar, through the fairing and out the other handlebar opening and up to the aux input. Maybe a few chrome wire ties and it might not look too bad with a chrome mount.

Anyone try something along this line they post a picture of?

The thread (link) I posted earlier I did that w/the line (as others have done in that thread) that goes to the Aux input on my radio. I use my cigarette lighter as a power source so that isn't run inside the fairing. However if you are using a permanent wired power source inside the fairing you can run that wire inside the same hole as the stereo cord (through the handlebar opening).

Thanks again Fired...just the info I was looking for. After so many years using my Zumo, I couldn't imagine biking without it. I download route files from my zumo after trips with my various riding groups and then share the routes by email. Using GoogleEarth anyone you send the file to can "fly" through the bike trip route you just took using the real sat photos in GoogleEarth. If you haven't tried it, its worth the effort.

I still haven't seen a pic where someone runs the audio out from the zumo thru the handlebar openings in the fairing and then uses the aux input on the HK radio.

BTW does anyone know if the 2010 SEUC handlebar is a 1" or 1.25"?

i used kuryakyn fuel door accessory mount part #1466.  drilled and threaded both power and audio through door and through fuel tank chrome, then followed HD harness to faring cavity, installed power in HD provided spade connectors on lamp harness and audio into new rea aux port i installed.  very solid, easy to read and function while enjoying the breeze.  can send pics if anyone needs them.
