Frickin' security screwdriver
« on: August 26, 2009, 06:31:17 PM »

I can't find mine. Does anybody have an extra? The thing costs $5.00 but shipping is like $15.00. Or better yet, has anyone figured out a way to upgrade the thing to a better system?

Mark,
Are you talking about the security screw for the Zumo 450/500/500? :confused5:

If so there are better options then that screw/screwdriver combo...

Zumo 450/550 security thumb screw

Zumo 450 550 Replacement Security Screw

Also check out this post - Zumo Tips/Tricks... Reply #39 this is a nice replacement security screw for the mount.

Great idea. I wanted one of those thumb screw types but the one I saw was from out of country. Is there one available here in the states?

I just ordered the one off the ST Website. It was less expensive and sounds like it does the same thing.

You aren't alone :glasses:.... it was the biggest PITA that I've seen in awhile. The thumbscrew will provide just as much "security" as that fancy screw/screwdriver combo will.... especially when all the screwdrivers are alike and anyone can order the screwdriver from Garmin. ::)

The thumscrew will be better for me as I take it off and on so many times. Don't like to leave it on when I walk away from the bike as I take it with me. If it dissapeared I may have troubles getting back home. :huepfenlol2:

I normally do that when bike is out of sight also, with the thumbscrew it is much easier. We do become dependent on these gizmo's once we have them. :D

Got this off the ZUMO site. I love it! Takes half a sec. to get the zumo off. No screw to loose. Or try to take off in the dark. I'm gonna try to use the security screwdriver to house the allen wrench for the battery cover.

Well I got the thumbscrew today and it works GREAT! Although it's "less security" than the Zumo security screwdriver it really does not make a difference since I take the unit off everytime I stop and park. Worth the money.

Mark,
Glad you like it and it's working out. The Garmin hype about that being a "Security Screw/Screwdriver" is just that hype.... Anyone can purchase those screwdrivers from Garmin (not a requirement you show proof of ownership of a Garmin 450/500/550 to get them), and all the screw/screwdriver combinations are the same. The only "Security" it offers is the same as the thumbscrew offers... it just keeps the Zumo secure in the mount in case the latch were to pop open while going down the road and it is not an anti-theft security device. Plus the thumbscrew makes it a lot easier to get the unit off and stored properly then having to fool w/that screwdriver. :2vrolijk_21:
