Damage to Derby Cover
« on: June 27, 2010, 05:35:35 PM »

I'm at wits end trying to figure out how my Derby cover is getting the damage shown in the photo. I wear regular denim pants and leather boots without any metal of any kind. My wife's feet are a good distance from the cover and her boots don't have any metal either. She does get on the bike from that side  but I have watched her and she isn't even close. I have lost count of the shops and people I have had look at it for their opinion and other than one person thinking it was vandalism, I had no answers. There is not a scratch on the inside of the cover. I have an 1800 foot gravel driveway but there is mnimal damage under the bike with the exception of the oil cooler which manages to get hit with allot of road debris. I don't want to purchase a replacement until I solve this. I have 33,000 miles on the 08 SERK and this started showing up when the bike was about 6 months old. I would appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Ray G.

It won't look pretty,  during your next few rides,  but you could cover the area  with some masking tape.  Then as your ride ends or you take a break,  look at the tape.  Is it blue, black, scratched up more or looks just like it did when you applied it.

That would be one (cheap) way to zero in on what is causing it before you buy a new derby cover. :nixweiss:

No metal of any kind, nothing on pants or boots. I have thought of using masking take to try as moscooter suggested. I have some masking tape that is made for high temp use. When I get my bike back from the dealership I will give it a try. When my wife was posting the photo I had her magnify it quite a bit and you can see that the gouges are deep and appear to be dragged across the cover. This ones not that easy.

Do you think it's possible you contact your derby cover when you reach for your kickstand?

Only thing I could think is if something got lodged in her boot, like a rock, thats about where the front of a foot on the passenger pegs (or boards) would rest.....strange....

you have scratches on the primary cover by the damage on the derby cover.this leads me to believe you are kicking that spot while getting on or off,or your wife is.good news is the part of the derby cover that is damaged is a decal and you can buy it seperate at your harley dealer.

It appears the damaged spot is at the front of the derby cover, this is nowhere close to the passengers foot rest. If I was to guess , I would say you are hitting your derby cover when you are either putting down or kicking up your kick stand. Just my guess at the mystery.

I got my bike back from the dealership yesterday. I was anxious to test the kickstand theory. I'm sad to report that I'm the sole idiot responsible for the damage via the kickstand. I feel really stupid on this one.

Thanks for the help.

Is the rubber stopper missing?? I would think that would stop the kickstand short of hitting the derby cover to prevent this from happening. :nixweiss:

Ray, don't feel bad.  At least you discovered the problem.  I seem to recall a thread about dumb things we've ALL done on or with our bikes.  Live and learn.   :2vrolijk_21:   :2vrolijk_21:

Yeah, really.  So the stand itself is whacking the derby cover?  That doesn't sound right.  Let's see a pic of your jiffy stand.
