Rear tire replacement on 09 FXSTSSES3
« on: July 13, 2010, 06:01:35 PM »

Anyone tried the Avon Cobra yet. This Dunlop is wearing very fast and costs more than the Avon. I have 2200 miles and it doesn't look like it will last 5k. I don't do burnouts or anything stupid to cause this wear, plus the grip isn't good enough to warrant the short life on this tire.

Opinions please.

You're bike looks great with the Avon 250, and it looks like you use all of the tire too....

I am just turning 5K miles on my 2009 and the back tire is about done.   I don't do burnouts either but I have heard my back tire does spin through first and second gear.  So is the word on the street that the Avon lasts longer?  And I can go with a 250??

Hi Zinister,
I am very happy with the Avon…but I have a friend that has put a 260 Metzler in his Vrod…and it fits…this weekend I will see him and will take pictures of both together…but so far I am very happy with the handling of the Avon and the grip…here in Spain there is lots of curves and you really need a top of the line tire…and size becomes irrelevant…
I will post the pictures next week…
Have a nice day…

Joe,

How's the wear compared to the stock Dunlops so far? And did you see an improvement in handling?

I'm hoping to make it into next year before I put on tires, no sense in getting new tires right before the end of the season.

On my 07, I had both front and rear replaced with the stock Dunlops this spring, the tread pattern is reversed between the two tyres, the front is D408 while the rear is D407, I have ridden about 6000Km since replacement and am now noticing a whining noise coming from the rear, I cant make out if its coming the the tyre or whether its the wheel bearing, there seems to be no excessive wear in the tread and the rear wheel remains stable, the tone of the whine changes a little with speed but remains constant in different gears, I am not unduly worried about this noise yet and will have it checked at the next sheduled service, I have found this set of tyres to be very slippery both front and back and so will be changing tyre manufacturer next time!

I run Metzler on my Dyna but have found them to wear very quickly on long haul freeway trips.

Hi Zinister,
So far so good…when I get back home I will let you know exactly how many miles I have on them and the wear on the tire…right know I don’t remember the exact miles when I change them….
The front tire is a Dunlop the one that I got from the factory and is ready to be change know…. I have 12500 miles on them…
Have a nice day….

Joe, nice photos"s. Looks like the rear wear is excessive.
