Exhaust Gaskets?
« on: March 04, 2006, 12:04:50 PM »

My Parts Catalog for my 04 SED says the correct PN# is 65324-83A.  However, the gasket the dealer gave me was 17048-98.  I didn't bother checking the numbers in advance, but was hoping these are OK? Thx!

I'm not sure but I think those are the stock TC88 gaskets. They will work they are just a little thicker and fill the exhaust port a little more.

Yep, the ones that were installed, which I assume are the  65324-83A, are about twice as thick as the 17048-98. However, it didn't look like they buldged into the port withmy Thunderheader?

These 17048-98 seem awfully thin for aftermarket exhaust which I would think may need a little more leadway for a proper seal?

What would you guys recommend for an aftermarket exhaust?

mrmagloo,

Just my personal opinion, but I prefer the original equipment over the Screamin' Eagle version, at least with aftermarket head pipes.

Yep, that would have been my guess. However, when I got around to opening the V&H box and review the instructions, they specifically recommend the 17048-98's so I figured I'd give 'em a whirl. I called the dealer back, and they said that's all they use for aftermarket pipes too.  I'm going to watch them closely, and if I notice a leak, I'll swap them out for the others. Thx guys.

mrmagloo,

The gasket the dealer gave you is the Screamin' Eagle version - see attachment:

Good call Jerry. I wasn't sure the number and just didn't click.

Guys:

I think the Screamin Eagle gaskets seal just fine...and if you've spent time and money porting your heads to match your exhaust and then you install a gasket that compresses into the port you've defeated the purpose. When you remove the stock gaskets you can see that they do expand into the exhaust port. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I've been using the SE gaskets for years without a problem.  They do seal fine,  and don't restrict the exhaust ports.  Stick with...they'll be fine.

The S.E. gaskets just make it a little ez er to install the exhaust on some models like Pythons on a Dyna. I like the 100-e9 i get from D&D. I dont know where they get em but they look like something of a 450 honda. The things seal great and dont smash into the exhaust port at all.IMHO

start of my rant....

I tried the SE gaskets on my V&H duals and the pipe wouldn't even reach the gasket...   Long story short, If you don't over tighten your exhaust, the stock gaskets seal better and won't swell into the exhaust ports...  I have heard the SE gaskets referred to more than once as "the perfect gasket for someone who over-torques things..."  Tight enough is tight enough, and too tight is something entirely different.

end of my rant....
