Stock push rods vs SE
« on: March 29, 2012, 05:23:53 PM »

Curious...  Is there any REAL performance difference between the stock push rods on a 2010 Ultra vs the SE Version..?  Not talking about the SE Adj push rods, rather the SE push rods that look almost identical to the stock ones.

I asked the stealor and they said the metal composition of the SE ones might be the reason their so expensive.  Stock push rods $5 ea

SE Push rods $116 for the set of four with new o-rings and covers...

and just to be clear the SE push rods that I was shown were NOT the adjustable push rods... rather SE makes push rods that look identical to the stock push rods...  simply priced much higher.  Again, not clear on the difference but I suppose it doesn't really matter.  I'm sure the stock ones will work just fine.

The performance of the push rods is determined by their being adjusted correctly and weight.  I really don't know what else a push rod could do, maybe have a more efficient ball end with better oil system design.  It's not like the cams, which can have as many different profiles to lift and duration that can be dreamed of.  I am in favor of adjustable push rods that are each adjusted  individually. Next would be going for the lightest weight.

I'm going to assume you're talking about the SE Pro Perfect Fit pushrods, at $119.95 per set.  They are a one piece non-adjustable pushrod that comes in standard length as well as .030" and .060" longer and shorter versions to work with different cams and heads without having to use adjustable pushrods.

They are slightly lighter than stock rods, which won't mean anything to you on a regular street engine, and they are significantly lighter than adjustable pushrods.  They are supposedly slightly stiffer, which will also mean nothing to you on a regular street engine.  All by themselves they offer nothing in terms of performance.  As part of a heavily modified engine they can help the other parts work better.

That you Jerry for your usual informative and definitive tutorial.

Now, if somebody would just tell me where I can sell the couple of hundred stock pushrods I've got in a bin in my garage for $5 each, I won't bitch about the cost of gas this summer.

I'm just joking. God knows which ones match which. The contents of that bin represents about 30 years of me and all my bros working on H-D's.
And it's not just push rods, GOD only knows how many stock cams, lifters, and countless other parts I've got stashed all over the garage. Can't seem to throw anything H-D related away.

for years and years i hung on to all my old take off stuff

realized i had stuff from the 80's off my last shovel and some parts from every single bike since, started selling them on ebay - got more than 10 times what i thought i would get, sold almost all of it, but still manage to find ebay deals for parts cheap when i need them.

thinking of what, i cleaned the garage a month ago and found another cubic YARD of old hd parts .... time for another auction
