$4k to spend... what would you do?
« on: July 25, 2012, 04:48:54 PM »

So I am looking for input on the best configuration for an upgrade to my '10 SESG.  I use it for extended trips and need reliability.  Want more punch, but need it civilized.

Here's what I am thinking:

Heads done  $1,000 - $1200
Crank balanced, trued, pinned and welded. $1,000 - $1,500
Timken Bearing installed. $500?
Cams $300 - $500
Throttle Body $500
Labor $1,000 - $1500

Oof... I am over by a bit... Perhaps I am estimating on the high side?  How about some specifics on the areas outlined?

you are going to need more money if you are going to split the cases and
build a good strong reliable engine.  I would say in the 6 to 8 grand range.JMO

Appreciate the feedback... maybe I should just look at the 120R motor?

Yep a friend of mine just did a 120 in his street glide and he said it cost
about 8500.00 to get it running and tuned in his bike. Good luck with
whatever you decide to do.

Where do you live in the US?  If you're near the west coast, Jim at Metal Dragon (hd_dude) has done a couple builds recently for members here and does excellent work.  Sounds like exactly what you're trying to do.  The shop's phone # is 510-885-9571.

Down payment on a BMW K1600GT or GTL would be another good choice. You might
want to talk to Rob May on this site,I think he has one.

I agree, to get that kind of work completed with splitting the cases you figures are a couple of thousand dollars light. But good luck with your build.

Imho, get a decent exhaust, cams, programmer, and get a good dyno tune.  The previous owner of my SEUC did just that, ended up with around 105HP/115TQ, and 6 years later with 34,000 miles, still runs like a raped ape and get great economy. I think this cost around $2K, and was a great bang for the buck. Stick the other $2K in your pocket and be happy.

Step 1
Ship the bike to Jim (hd-dude)
Step 2
Let Jim do his magic.
Step 3
Fly out to pick it up.
Step 4
Then ride that bitch home smiling all the way.

 ;D

Oh yeah, take pictures on the way home.

A set of good heads, cams, S&S lifters, and pushrods, and an S/E 58mm t/body should be a VERY nice upgrade that would be a ton of fun, without emptying your wallet!!

Here's the plan... Thoughts?

port heads
compression set @ 10.0-1
S&S .625 cams
S&S lifters
58mm t. body
set SE roller rockers
balance,weld & pin lower end
timken conversion
and a good tune.
