Muslim Xmas
« on: September 20, 2006, 08:08:02 PM »

I am not sure if this should be filed under oxymoron or what was OUR government thinking?
I tried posting rest of this but could not format right. But this is a USPS stamp commenerating EID holiday season.

What is EID?
Eid ul-Fitr (Arabic: [ch1593][ch1610][ch1583] [ch1575][ch1604][ch1601][ch1591][ch1585]), often abbreviated as simply Eid, sometimes spelled Eid al-Fitr in the Roman alphabet, is an Islamic holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting

Sure takes the ignorance of political correctness to a new level.  What's next?  I would imagine a commemorative Hugo Chavez offering.

Thanks Naitram, that was the remainder of the post I was trying to put here. While I don't have a problems with diverse religous holiday celebration( and agree that other non christain religion get holiday acknowledgment), the fact that we ARE NOW post 9/11 makes the issue of this stamp now, some what curious in light of the current state of the world? There are two ways of looking at the world. Either you can think as Twolane does ( which I completely agree with ) or you can kill all of the people you don't like. What you can't do is where we're at now which is some sort of twilight zone middle ground where we kill some and try to get along with others. The only way there will ever be peace in the world is if everyone recognizes the rights of everyone else to think, worship and live their lives as they choose. If that choice means following the edicts of religious fanatics with strict and unbending rules for life then that is their choice. Muslims accept this and are happy and content when allowed to live their lives under this type of system. Why the hell we think we're doing them a favor by turning their world upside down and trying to
" allow" them to emulate the US is beyond me. I may be naive, but I truly believe that if we stopped trying to ram the USA way of life down everyone's throats, we'd be a lot better off.

Dave, I think that's something you're going to understand better than we too often might here.  The simple geography and common American lack of int'l travel hurts us a bit.

England is simply geographically so much smaller.  Your communities have to mix more.  Here we're so damned spread out that outside the most major metropolitan areas many Americans don't visibly see a significant Muslim presence (for example).

Here we have the significant Palestinian community in the Detroit area and other pockets of population scattered elsewhere.  But we don't have the perception of a different community being "everywhere" within the country.

Quite frankly we suffer for that lack of perception.  We talk of the "melting pot" but forget that a foreign or immigrant population can't be assimilated or otherwise brought in a culture unless it's engaged.  England suffered foreigners of all stripe since Rome and before.  Whether they won or lost they all eventually became English in some fashion or another.

You're having similar troubles digesting populations of people now too.  It's something we all better do a damn well better job of as the cultures (at least internally) simply can't stay at each other's throats.

Good point Don, but the assimilation into the American society goes both ways.  Taking a more simplistic view, I have yet to hear any American Muslim group condemn the terrorism that their currently perverted religion has inspired, funded and actively supports throughout the world.  I think their acceptance and perhaps understanding may be more readily forthcoming if they were to actively support the country that so graciously welcomed them and continues to support their homelands with billions of taxpayer dollars each year.  Just one man's highly intolerant view of those seeking to destroy America.
