SESG Driver Backrest Install Question
« on: August 16, 2010, 09:42:02 PM »

Just got the backrest installed.  For those of you w/ one, does it look like this to you?  I've got a pretty good gap created by the backrest post pulling on the driver seat suggesting a poor fit.   Thoughts appreciated.  Thanks.

Just installed the standard non-cvo driver backrest in Sturgis and it smashes the seat twice as bad as yours does.

Makes no sense to me. At the prices, stuff should fit.

I'm on a Corbin.  But if I remember right (those who know me know we can't rely on that :nervous: ) there is an adjustment.  Remove your seat and I believe that if you loosen the bolts on your rider backrest bracket you'll see that it can be adjusted back a bit.

It's at least 1 1/4 inches forward of the seat slot. Didn't see room to adjust. I take it you've got to unscrew the back pad to get the seat off.

Mine does the same thing, but don't think it is as bad. Still wouldn't go without it.

The backrest doesn't unscrew for removal.  See the two rods that insert down in to the seat?  Squeeze those together.  They are spring loaded at their bottom end to hold the ends apart.  Squeeze them together and lift them up out of the mounting bracket.

Once the backrest is off the saddle comes off.  Once the saddle is off you'll see the mounting bracket for the backrest.  It'll have a series of mounting holes.  Unbolt it from it's current position and bolt it down again in a position that fits better (if there is one).

The pic was just stolen liberated from an eBay listing.  It shows a backrest in the bracket to help visualize how you squeeze the bars together for removal.  You can also see the row of four bolts on each side to move it to front or back.

HD replaced the original seat on my 2010 SESG with the "updated" seat. No help. Still a 3/4" gap between console and seat. Will probably have the SESG seat pan re-worked, but for now I have given up and have replaced with a stock seat from a 2009 Electra Glide Classic. Sits a bit higher, and vinyl not leather, but the wife loves the larger pillion and no crappy looking gap.  Anyway, my backrest needs to be moved forward to line up correctly with the slot in the EG seat. My question is this: are the mounting bolts for the backrest bracket fixed to the bike, or when I remove the nuts to re-position the bracket will the bolts fall through? Don't want to loosen the nut and then find out that I can't re-tighten.

Mine were fixed. I removed the nuts to move the bracket and the bolts stayed put.

When taking off the seat on an Ultra Classic, do you have to remove the tour pack? or will a phillips screwdriver fit between the passenger backrest and the seat, also I don't have a torque wrench, so how do I make sure when I tighten up the screw I don't have any future problems?
Thanks

You should be able to get a screwdriver in there to reach the screw... it might require you using one hand to depress/hold the seat/TP backrest out of the way to get to the screw though. I have never used a torque wrench on the seat screw just always snugged it tight and never had it come loose or loose it.

Raise the lid on the TP and the seat screw is much easier to get at.   :2vrolijk_21:
