Working on the RGU.
« on: June 23, 2019, 08:51:26 PM »

SO I worked on the bike today and took the toe shift lever off and added heel-toe shifter levers. These are CHEAP Amazon levers so I ordered the Harley levers.

The PO had used a piece of tubing when he removed the heel shifter and had wrapped packing tape around the shifter shaft so it wouldn't rattle...……. :frown::serious::frown:   Did I mention how much I hate fixing stupid crap PO's do to a bike.

My nearest dealer didn't have the spacer in stock so I ordered it from Surdyke along with some other parts. But I wanted to be able to ride my bike until the parts get here so I went to the hardware store and bought a 3/8ID x 1/2" bushing that drilled out to 1/2" to fit the shifter shaft. It isn't perfect and the shaft still has a little play in it but I can ride the bike.

I had to try and bevel the spacer a little to go over the shaft where it goes from splined to smooth.

The new heel-toe shift levers I got from Amazon came with these pegs but the PO had installed floorboard spacers so I wanted to move the pegs out some.

This wasn't my idea I got it off a post on the RoadGlide forum.

Here is what it looks like with the heel & toe pegs spaced out 1/2".

Here is a shot with my spacer I made.

And a closeup.

Next I took the chrome tank console off and installed a gloss black console.

It was dirty under the console so I cleaned it up before I installed the new one.

I kept the CVO fuel door because it has the CVO badge on it. And I also kept the CVO insert because it is metal and the one that came with the black console was plastic. Plus I think it just looks better. I am real happy with how this turned out. IHMO I think the black console looks better than the chrome one.

And the last thing I did was to pull the pin in the tree so I could roll the handlebars forward some since I didn't like how close they were.

Having a drill press helps. It isn't perfect but it sure is a HECK of a lot better than the piece of tubing the PO had used. Trying to UNDO all the crappy work others have done is always fun.
Now that I have the heel-toe shifter installed I am finding I might want to use extended shift levers. Which doesn't make any sense since my foot fit on my old bike. But if I do need extended levers I'll get them from Soft Brake and just return the Harley levers.

Well no pictures this time but from reading a bunch of the threads on here and after riding the bike in the sun I found that I couldn't see my stereo very well so I saw that a lot of people had suggested using the screen shield from NuShield so I ordered their complete kit for the Boom and speedo/tach. I installed them and can say I was impressed with the quality and ease of installation.

I also hadn't posted any pictures of my bars moved forward. I'll get a chance to really try them out tomorrow on a ride to a VA appointment. We'll see how much better they feel now and if I still don't like the position I'll have to look at getting new bars.

I also ordered a rear fender extension for the tri-bar light and it will be here on Friday.

Thanks Haird.

So I didn't like the chrome cover for the water pump so I ordered a new one off Amazon in Gloss Black.

Installed on the bike.

I'm trying to do the little things I can for right now. I have some other plans for it and will buy parts over the winter and then come next spring really get at it.

So I changed the highway peg mounts to the HD short arm mounts. I also installed Kuryakyn Heavy Industry Switchblade pegs. I need the stirrups for my right leg & prosthetic to support the heal when I am cruising. Plus with the stirrup I can have my heal on the floorboard and my toe on the stirrup.

Also changed out the rear brake pad to match.

And just to make everything match I swapped out my shifter pegs also.

I hope not, I want to breath this year if I can. But it has been an unusual early summer here in central WA anyhow. We have been having so much wind that it really hasn't been enjoyable to ride much. I'm not talking about a breeze I'm talking 15MPH and higher winds and most years once spring is over with the winds die down.

Next week I am heading to ID to take the bike to Soft Brake so he can make me a custom rear brake lever.

I'm loving it. I can now reach the rear brake and use it. With no ankle with the stock rear brake pedal I had issues reaching it. I would recommend Soft Brake to anyone as it gives you more room on your floorboard plus makes the rear brake easier to get to.

I got another package from the Brown Santa today.

First was a tank protector to keep my paint looking good.

And then the manuals for the bike. Now I have paper & PDF versions of them.

So since I have been blacking out some parts I ordered a gloss black switch cover.

And while I had it apart I installed the aux switch assembly for the Suspension Technologies M.R.P. reverse I am going to be installing.

Most of my posts over the past few days has been in the DriveTrain area about the install of my M.R.P. reverse which went well other than  a few hickups.

But the Brown Santa came again today with some socks and a tank bra. Nothing exciting but the boot socks will be nice and for me instead of 3 pairs of sock it's like getting 6.

I had scratched my tank somehow even with me trying to be as careful as I can getting on and off my bike with my prosthetic or the zipper I have on my jeans.

So I installed the new bra.

Good Stuff!  In the picture that scratch looks like it is just in the clear coat.   You should be able to buff it away with some compound or at least make it much less noticeable for when the day comes that you take the bra off!

Where did you get the Carbon Fiber Fork Lock Cover?

I need to get some new rubbing compound as the can I have is like 10 years old.... :-\ :-\   But I will try rubbin it out. No wise cracks now either.

The ignition switch surround I got from Surdyke part# 25700870 if you're talking about the black one and if you mean the chrome one that was the stock cover like fastfreddy said.
I didn't think the chrome cover looked right with the black dash.

So I am trying to get all the little stuff done to the bike before I leave Friday morning heading to Deadwood, SD for SW IX. I got the wiring finished for my Tri-Bar and rear fender extension done today.

Rechecked my belt tension & rear axle alignment. Then installed a cup holder on my handle bars. I'm not a fan of stuff on my bars but I want to stay hydrated on the ride.
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FJNMWSG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Going to take the basket to the store and find the largest bottle I can get that will fit.

Then installed a Guardian Angle Bell holder.

And then for a little BLING had to add some flags to the tour pack.

Next is check all my fluid levels and just give it a quick once over.

Can you take some of this smoke from the fires with you. You realize you jinxed it with responce in a thread awhile back.
The bike is looking good.

Have to bring my spare socket with me for that JUST IN CASE something bad happened. It would SUCK to be 1,000 miles away from home with only one leg to stand on. So I figured I would have a little fun while I was doing it too. I have a Gadsden flag coming I am going to try and attach to the socket also.

Well I got my tire replaced for $54 with the Tire & Wheel coverage. But I couldn't put that dirt wheel back on the bike so I spent a little while washing it.

On many miles on the tire you replaced?
Had a nail in the rear at about the 1000 mile range and was replaced under the wheel & tire warranty but they waived the deductible for me.
I have a little over 15,000 on it now and looking for a nail.

While I was waiting for UPS to finally show up with my new reverse & shocks I installed the Custom Dynamics LED Vent Fillers. Boy do I really like how the newer fairing comes off compared to the older ones.

The old headlight surrounds are being removed and replaced.

I'd also got LED turn signal lights to both the front and rear of the bike.

Hazard lights on

And while I had everything apart I also installed in the upper vent a screen from Vent Screens.

Howdy all,
Sorry for being missing for a while. I didn't ride my bike at all last year (2020) due to a injury to my left knee. I'd gone on a hunting trip in March and much have wrenched my knee somehow. Ended up with fluid in my knee and it ballooned up to the size of a soccer ball or at least looked like it. Been riding this year and just enjoying it for now but have plans to do some more work to it at some point. I've been spending most of my wrenching time working on my Jeep which has turned into a HUGE project.

My daughter made me an awesome fathers day cake.  :orange:  :mango:

I've been spending a lot of time over at the Seattle VA working with the CLIMB center which does R&D for prosthetics and other things for amputees. Here's a picture in North Bend at the Shell station on my way to the VA.

And then at the VA in the parking garage in the motorcycle parking area. Not a ton of people were riding that day.

Welcome back, good to hear from you.

Thanks. It's been great to get some wind therapy again.
