Any iPhone app "Must Haves?"
« on: February 04, 2010, 11:53:53 AM »

My phone crapped out recently.  Bowing to familial pressure replaced it with an iPhone a couple days ago.  Never needed nor wanted a phone that allowed work email or other com to so easily chase or be with me all the time.  But... well... my niece does like her games.

This group is geeky and just OCD enough to have waded through application libraries (so I won't have to :drink: ).  So offer up your lists.  Any must-have apps out there that a guy should grab?

Welcome to the new century. Even this site works quite well on the iPhone. One of the best apps is Google Earth and you might also like Wikime. For serious news the New York Times. Everything else is really up to your personal needs, unless you want one of the girls who soap wash the screen of your iPhone from the inside.

Ride safely,
Louis

First thing I did was setup some news feeds.  That will be handy.  Going to have to find the screen washer girl.

Have you ever seen a Dex phone book ad on TV?  It is even better without needing a TV.

Ok, here I go.  Will come up for air after wading through the goodies.

Oh, was asked in a PM "which iPhone."  I initially named it "little bastard" but I don't think that's what was meant.  If it makes any difference to app selection it's the 3GS 16 gig variant.

Guess I'm too predictable.  First thing I did after acquisition was hit eBay and get a box on the way with five DC cords, a couple of AC cords, something else I've now forgotten and a red cover.

If I don't like it when it gets here found something called an Otter Cover in a burgundy or other dark red that will fill the bill.

There is a new App in the works, called Chromolator. What you do is snap a picture of your bike, and the App will immediately point out any missing chrome. Furthermore it'll pull up Moco and third party pricing as well as nearby dealer availability (for instant gratification). It is rumoured that Harley will have trade show talent in droves at upcoming bike events, equipped with the App to jumpstart full price accessory sales.

Ride safely,
Louis

I read just last night about a non-OE version of that same app.  The third party version was called "The Dood-leviewer."

They've already brought out Chromolator -01B.  It seems the first version routinely had stuff leaking out of the speakers and sometimes the faceplate seal just gave up and the faceplace would cloud over.

I've looked at the app, and I cannot understand why this is free. It seems to be very cool, with an outstanding combination of features. It is now on my iPhone, and I'll see how well it works in Europe for a change ;-).

Don ... Glad to see you got the iPhone.  Now I can send you irrelevant chit all the time ....

Some I use while traveling ..

Voice Memos:  Beats typing notes or reading a "to do" list.  Also records conversation when applicable.
Remote:  Hook up to your home network.
AccuWeather: International version
Dial Zero:  Shortcuts for recorded switchboards worldwide.
Currency:  Currency conversions all countries.
White Noise:  Plug in ear buds, turn on and eliminate the person next to you with having to slap 'em.
Yelp:  Restaurant and saloon locator with reviews and maps.
Skype:  US or International make your calls over WiFi .... no charges or time consumption.
Google:  Finding stuff worldwide.
Language Translators:  Your choice of countries
Easy WiFi:  Free from ATT .... auto login at mobile hotspots
vLingo:  Voice dialing ... especially good with phone in 1 hand, cheeseburger in the other.
Seismometer:  Use overseas to assure that it's a hangover and not an earthquake.
Sex Jokes:  Perfect for use when the little old ladies at the airport continue to read over your shoulder.

Just a few ..... got about 40 more if you need 'em.  One idea to consider would be a subscription to mac.com.  Gives you mucho gigs of "cloud space" for stuff you don't want on your phone as well as the ability to "nuke" your phone if it is lost or stolen from any computer.

That is cool.  Interesting little tool.  Just tried it on the dog.  No barcodes though.  So the dog just looked at me funny.

If you listen to or use XM/Sirius the app is great you can listen to it anywhere and plug it from the iphone into your aux port on your bike radio saving $500.00 for the XM Module  for the HK radio on your bike. The only drawback is that to get the best deal you need to already be an XM/Sirius customer, which I am for my caged vehicles. If you like music Shazam is a cool app thats free, if you here a song u like and not sure of the name or title you just hit the app let it hear a few notes and it will give u all the info. Trapster is another free app that gives u updates where the bears r.

One thing I forgot to mention Don,

You may catch this right away due to your phone comming with this feature but after upgrading my phone (I think it was @ ver 3) I found while playing the ipod while riding with the phone in the ram mount the songs would change randomly and it drove me nuts for about 3 hour of riding. I found the "shake to shuffle" feaure was set to on and this was the default after the upgrade, this is located in settings/ipod. It gives the user the abilty to change to the next song while listening to an album while using the ipod just by shaking the phone, but it will change songs while riding due to the vibration of the handlebars.....Roy

Haven't seen this yet Roy.  Must be off by default on this phone.

This begs a question though.  Just because we are who we are and will, therefore, hang anything we like on the bikes doesn't always mean it's a good idea.  It's doubtful these phones are built with the vibration and shock protection in mind that a bike accessory would be designed with.  Also don't remember any of the mounts I've seen do anything to isolate from vibration.

So how have these things held up for those that have given them some extended use?  Anyone experience failures they might have been concerned were duty related after long stretches on the bike?  Or do they take a licking and keep on ticking?

Don, I would not be too concerned. The iPhone is all solid state, there are (with the exception of some sensors) no moving parts. Should take the rides with pride.

Ride safely,

FWIW Don ... I've been riding with mine for two years. Because I was as apprehensive as you are about rigid mounting choices I've elected to use mine in the glove box. Usually with something to absorb shock .... ie gloves or something  :nixweiss:

As Louis pointed out ... with no moving parts risk should be lessened. Just not to a degree I was comfortable with.  :nervous:   :huepfenlol2:

Started a thread last year asking if any riders had begun using the iPhone as their primary GPS. Got virtually no response. Maybe if I ask here. Any iPhone GPS users out there?

I already know I wouldn't use it as the primary nav on the bike for anything more than relatively local travel.  To find food and fuel; that kind of thing.  Without considering how well it might or might not stand up to longer days of vibration I don't want to mess with even thinking about "oooh, is that rain up there?".

For regular nav use the Garmin will stay on the bars.  Screen is larger.  Buttons are bigger.  No questions of the 3G data feed.  The normal GPS unit is just a better tool for the job.

Recently I discovered this thread for the iPhone Apps. Next to H-D for me is Apple.  Several months ago I was looking online for some information on BMW cars for the near future.  They replied and with the reply was an application free, (which means give me all of your history) for the iPhone 3G/S, the BMX M Power Meter. I went to iTunes and downloaded the app.  After several weeks I gave up my history in order to get an access key.  It rates your vehicle’s performance. I was more interested in testing my 08 serk.

Finally I realized that this was like a dyno and away form motorcycles I never use the word. So I went back in to the App Store and found this amazing app.  It cost, but it works like the dealers devices on my iPhone. It is call Dynolicious in the App Store. It is the ultimate for the iPhone H-D addicts like myself with 11 pages of purchased apps. Yes I have the numbers of cameras, editing, printers, games, music editing, drawing, painting, design, news, and a good bible you name I may have it.

Dynolicious is a great app.  I know that if you have not purchased it you will today, it is a “Must Have”.  After you purchase it research it online.  Check out the video and good dyno-ing.

While you guys are spending that big money make the purchase of TomTom. The price has drop form the price I paid for US – Canada at $99 when it was inrtoduce.

Give me some feedback and let me know how it works for you.

Thanks GH, that Motorcycle-Minder is a great app for my collection.  I have added all my vehicles apps on a single page. Like most of you my apps are organized according to functionality.  Therefore I will share with the App Geeks my Vehicle Page.  I study each app carefully to make sure that functions are not duplicated.  On my main page I have TomTom’s – US • Canada that is a great GPS resources.  VisualMap is and amazing resource if you plan rides with HOG or other chapters. It works well for landmarks. At first I felt it was a waist then I learn to print screen.  Now I take the picture the maps below than print screen and presto.  I keep a catalog of landmarks and restaurants.  Finally Emergency is a great app.  One night I had a mechanical problem on a freeway.  Sure the bike has emergency flashers, but while waving my flashing app I got more attention.  It was easier for assistance to locate me.  AudioTools can get expensive, but I put sound systems of bikes from time to time and this app is useful for speaker positioning for the best sound quality.  If you have AroundMe you also need SearchIt.  The results are different.  What can I say about Trapster, but it should be a requirement for every driver.

I think AroundMe and SearchIt could both be replaced by WikiMe?

I totally agree with you about trapster, its the business  even here in my adopted home town in Switzerland

Trapster Now Runs in the Backgound – iOS 4

Quote!
"Trapster 4.3 for the iPhone was released recently on the app store. Some cool tidbits about Trapster, we were the first free app to use the background navigation"

Since this latest up date, does anybody else find that trapster runs down your iphone battery with a few hours?
Find out here the new way to turn off this app on your phone

I would be delighted to just have decent reception and NO hang up calls on my iPhone 4!!! This is my 2nd one and still the same problems--very low signal strength and many, many many terminated calls.

The iPhone 4 is the most expensive Game Boy made!!!

What amazes me is that there is no solution in sight by Apple or ATT. I am impatiently waiting to see what happens with this issue when the Verison roll out happens. We will then know if it's the Phone or the Network.

Only 22 months left in the contract.

I smell class action suit times over 2 million subscribers...

You just HAD to bring that up didn't you??

Actually the initial punch list on my CVO was resolved fairly quickly and I am a happy camper. Now on to that damned APPLE iPhone 4.

My 2 Favorite Apps:

ESPN & USAA

If you bank with USAA you can do ALL of your banking through your I Phone, you can even make DEPOSITs!!!

If your insurance is through them then you'll be able to show your insurance card electronically now using your iPhone.

I love the VLingo app....  it alllows me to say:  "Text John Doe That i will be late meeting at dealership"  and the app will translate open up my text tool and let me preview and then send text with.  All with four strokes of my finger. It will also work with email and twitter etc...  the app itself is free, but the module to work with email and SMS cost about 9 bucks. Well worth it!!!  Also available for blackberry.
