Satellite Phone
« on: November 27, 2013, 12:05:14 AM »

Planning our trip to Alaska in July and one thing that came up is getting a satellite phone for emergency's. Non of us seem to know anything much about them. Did a little reseach but I figured I'd ask here if anyone has first hand info on renting one. Which type and from who.ect.

Looking to call a tow truck....not Search and Rescue.
But thanks for the response for your 1st post.
I guess nobody has used one here.

Go to www.satellitephonestore.com

Rent an Iridium 9505A and you are good to go.

X2 On Iridium phone.  Keep an eye on ebay for some deals.  Guys coming back from Afghanistan usually sell them rather cheaply.  Of course the hardware is cheap, the cost per minutes is crazy though.

Most highways in Alaska have coverage and are well traveled.

Where in Sweden are you located?

Why not just add Canada to your exisating cell plan for the month or so you're going to be traveling through.  We did and it worked relatively well and was pretty cheap.  We had signal in most places.  In the area we didn't, help wouldn't have come fast enough anyway, so it didn't matter.

I bought a SPOT Connect and linked to my iPhone.  You cannot talk via sat but you can send text messages.  Also did the SOS subscription and rescue service for my trip to Alaska.  Much cheaper than sat phone and also it lets your family track you via a web page.  Worked great for me.  Also cell service was pretty good until you get into northern British Columbia and the Yukon.  Northwest Terr. also a no go for cell.  Also check out Mile Post magazine.  Map info for all the routes and current gas locations on each route.  Have a great trip.

I did look at the Spot, and the inReach Two-Way Satellite Communicator. I like the tracking feature but by the time you pay for that service, you're only a few bucks shy of the cost for renting a phone. That and you get to actually talk to someone. Could save a life.
That said, I'm really thinking about getting the Spot anyway. Way cool to have a track saved of where all we've been. And the ladies at home can follow the trip.
