how to break this 2012 bike in?
« on: March 18, 2012, 10:09:28 AM »

Does anybody have a better, tried and proven, method to break in a bike than I am doing now?  It has 270 miles on it now so is jusst about half broken in.  I did the way the book says and didn't take the bike over 3000 rpms for the first 50 miles.  then for the next 450 miles don[t go over 3500 rpms.  I am seriously trying to honor that method.  So I put it in gear and rev up to that point and no farther.  I allow it to slowly rev down and then slowly rev up again.  Trying to stay in a gear that allows it to go down to 2500 or so and back up again.  Of course yu need to keep your mind and eyes on the road ahead as well.  Not a time to get in bumper to bumper traffic.  The bike seems to rev fairly smoothly and run well.  At 500 miles i will just ride it like I want to.  Which is not abusing it, mind you.  I am just saying that if I go to above 4000 rpm as I shift, not going to worry about it at all.  If I want to stay at a steady rpm of 2000 out on the freeway, that will only help my mileage....once it is broke in.  Should I be trying to rev the crap out of it and "ride it like I stole it""???  I have always felt that method will wind me in the dealership having to explain how I was "just following the way the book says and now it's broken".  and the dealership will say, "well, we tore the engine down and looks like serious abuse to us!!"  Pay up!  So, brothers and sisters out there, I still have time to listen to others.  what do you all say??   Pork.

There are so many schools of thought on proper break-in, you could go crazy trying to decide what to do.  With improved manufacturing and production practices, and better tolerances, I don't know that the break-in is as critical as it used to be.  That said, I do think the worst thing to do to a new motor would be to run it at a constant RPM for extended periods.

FWIW, for the first 20 to 30 miles, I tried to aggressively accelerate thru 3rd gear to 3000 - 4000 RPM, and decelerate using only engine compression to seat the rings.  Then rode very gently for the remainder of break in.  Don't really know if it makes a difference, but it's kinda like praying; even though it probably doesn't help, it makes me feel like I'm at least involved in the process.

Ride safe!

Before 50 miles I keep it below 3000 after that I wring er`out. Never had a oil burner in the last 5 motorcycles. Heat and pressure seats the rings.

Vary the rpm's and don't lug the engine. Just don't baby it.

Did mine also on the Dyno with initial tune, brought back for full tune cleanup after 1200 miles last week. Runs great.
