Zzyzx Rd. - The real story
« on: April 02, 2015, 07:37:45 PM »

If you live in Los Angeles you'll pass Zzyzx Rd. on I5 when traveling to Las Vegas.  It's in the in the middle of the desert and seems out of place.   I've always thought it was an interesting name and now I know the story.  This makes for an interesting read so I thought I'd share.

Oh yes.  Just about everybody from California knows where it's at.  I-15 is the main route from So Cal to Vegas and the shortest/quickest route from Nor Cal is down I-5 and up over the Tehachapi mountains and on to I-15.

With a name like that, once you see it you'll never forget it.  I'll be blowin by it again Sat. morning.  The question that's always came to mind everytime I've passed it since I was a kid is "how the hell do you pronounce that?"  ;D

Sounds like some place for me to see after Ouray. Plan on heading toward Vegas from there.  Spend a few days and go to California and travel home through Texas. Don't have to go to work   :coolblue:

It's pronounced "Ziz Ix".

Is that after you smoke two doobies or three?

What route are you taking to Vegas?  There are some great places to see out there, depending on which way you're going.  Four Corners, Monument Valley, Death Valley, Route 66 or another route, Monument Valley, Navajo Bridge, Zion National Park.

If you'd like, let me know what you're interested in seeing and I'll lay out the route and then attach links to some of my photo ride reports of that route.

I have heard it is the most stolen freeway sign in the country. I have seen one or two in my buddies houses in college. Not mine of course

Ha!  Now I know the full story!  I have passed that road hundreds of times over the years.  I only recently learned how to pronounce it after listening to the local Highway Country giving traffic updates and a wreck occurring near the road.  The traffic reporter said "Zi-Zechs".  The Zi rhymes with Hi (add the Z) and the Zechs with Decks (add the Z).  SJ Ron :)

After the 2014 WC GTG in Carmel by the Sea, I stop by Zzyzx as a part of a Grand Tour (Scavenger Hunt). At the end of the road, including about 2 miles of dirt, you get to a rest stop that commemorates the church/radio station and the California State University, Desert Studies Center.

Enjoy if you ever go out that way.. it was a hot friggin' day and desert was pretty brutal on my visit.

The most interesting thing that I have seen in the area are wild herds of donkeys.  Other than that, it's usually 100+ degrees and windy.   Some nasty crosswinds in the area when you are on a bike.  SJ Ron :)

Interesting story. Oddly enough, there is a road in west GA with a very similar name. It is spelled Zyzzx Road. I always wondered how that came about.

More in line with my memories of that area over the years.  :2vrolijk_21:
