Cure to Poor Garage Lighting
« on: January 14, 2018, 06:42:36 PM »

I’ve got crappy lighting in my garage. I don’t know that an investment in overhead lights is a worthwhile solution. I just need improved lighting when working on things in the garage.

So this is what I found at Lowe’s. Very happy with the solution.

Utilitech 6000 Lumens LED Light Stand. They're around $100 each and I got them on sale for like ~$70 each stand.

How would they work if you put one into each Corner pointing towards Center of room?

I have five 4 bulb fluorescent fixtures in my garage.  Two months ago I re-lamped them all with the brightest LED's I could put in them.  World of difference, and got the Bulbs at Lowe's.

Well it would be a vast improvement but I don't think it would be as good as having these be portable and able to move them directly to your specific work area. I got these because I knew lifting the hood/fairing on the RG and working on the radio, amplifiers and such was going to require good lighting.

Were they the older fluorescent fixtures? If so, what LED lights did you use to replace the tubes?

Those look good! Bet they also work ok as reflective light from the ceiling, notice you have one pointed up.  Have a couple of the LED hanging shop ceiling lights from Costco.  Inexpensive, easy to install, and they give good overhead light.  Use them for indoor bike waxing, etc.

For direct light needs I have an old regular incandescent with a hook trouble light & a Craftsman 2 light Halogen adjustable on a movable stand.  Today would buy LEDs for that because it gets hot like a heat lamp.  Ok for the weather now, in the summer it sucks.

Lighting isn't the greatest where I store my bike either... I choose this option - Energizer Alkaline 300-Lumen LED Headlamp... puts the light right where I'm looking, doesn't get in the way, and a lot easier than trying to hold a flashlight and do something at the same time. :)

I relit my garage with LED lamps. Just take out the old fluorescent lamps and install the LED lamps. Easy peazy.
The results were amazing. Very brite!

I'd never looked close at doing this.  Apparently mistakenly always assumed this would take a change in ballasts also.  My shop has a bazillion 8 foot bulbs so any overall change isn't cheap.  Oh, wait, that all changes soon.  Never mind.

Crap, wonder if the lighting is any good in the new garage?  :nixweiss:

I also bought the pedestal lights and tried them for awhile. Got tired of the pedestals always being where I wanted to stand. Installed 28' of ceiling mounted flourscents and all was better. Recently went in a garage similar to mine in size but with less fixtures (16' total) but with daytime 5000k LED bulbs and it was amazing how much brighter his was than mine. I am deleting my ballasts and direct wiring for LED tubes next week. Instructions say to remove ballasts and connect remaining wires and then install LED tubes. I know you can now buy direct use LED tubes but the ballasts are the first thing to go bad in a flourscent and removing them altogether sounds like a win-win.

At the Eagles Nest garage in Maggie Valley I put 2 tube 2' led's.
They give plenty of light even with the 10'4" ceilings.
The bonus room upstairs is 555' and I have 2 2 tube 2' strips up there and with a 7' 6" ceiling it's very bright.
They are easy to install and use very little electricity.
When we build the house next door I will use as many led lights as possible.

i had 2 x 4 foot fluorescent fixtures in my garage.  i changed those out to led fixtures last year.  much brighter.  got them from lowes for about $50 each.  this year, i added 2 more near where the door would end when it is open.  so now i've got 4 x 4 foot led fixtures and it's like daylight in there.  but, having them on a pedestal does have the advantage of being able to 'aim' them where needed.  the overheads do suffer from shadows depending on what you're doing.

Our entire house is lit with led lighting of one type or another. In my new 3rd bay garage I went with two 8 foot long fixtures with 4 bulbs each. Liked them so well I added them to the 2 car garage as well.

Decent overhead lighting will help. If you can, paint the ceiling and the walls a bright white. This will, for lack of better wording on my part bounce the light around and illuminate things.

Bank of LEDs behind the frosted defuser cover.

Anyone used these?

Simon, I removed the old fluorescent lights in the garage and instead of going with the LED type long bulbs, I went this way:
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Lithonia-Lighting-IBC-454-MV-4-Light-T5-White-High-Output-Fluorescent-High-Bay-IBC-454-MV/202838871

Going the T5 route, I still had to remove the old fixtures but they were just about the same size as the new ones.  Took me 2 hours removal and installation.  Replaced two fixtures with two T5 and it's like night and day comparison.  I can actually work on the bike/car without any additional lighting except a flashlight when I'm working in the creases and crevices.

These are less expensive than the LED replacements.  I've had these installed for a couple years now and haven't had to replace a bulb yet.  No diminishing in the light output so far either.

I do like the stand lighting you've purchased but like cvodon stated, they would always be taking up working space where you need to be... ;D

The fixtures were installed in 2004.  They are 4 T8 bulb fixtures that have 4' bulbs.

I am pretty sure they are Sylvania T8 32 watt replacement LED Daylight 5000K.  I got them at Lowe's.  I know they were the brightest color I could get, the 5000K.

I'm off shore at the moment but I can double check when I get home in a couple weeks if you would like.

Simon,

Here you go.  Funny I paid $135.00 each before.

If they're for your garage, I would use either open bulb industrial fixtures (w/ LEDs, of course) or maybe those with a diffuser cover on them, like they have for kitchens.  Some (many?) of those indoor fixtures don't have replaceable LEDs; when (if) they go bad, you have to replace the entire fixture.  I have a couple of those small ones in the house.

Put a 4 x 4' LED fixture (has a diffuser cover) in the kitchen.  So much better than the fluorescent fixture it had.

Most of the previously-fluorescent fixtures in the garage have LEDs in them.  Much brighter, faster, and not affected by cold weather.  Always had a few bulbs that didn't fire up when below 40 deg.

I have S and U in my house.  U is over my table on a dimmer.  I also have a pair of smaller round ones in my hallway.  Very happy with them, but thought seriously about putting them all on a dimmer.
