Don't recall wing suits being banned, but I was a 90s kind of guy. Camera jumpers use 'em.
To me...........any kind of RW at TV is a big deal. 
As I remember it the batwing suits were used by some folks into the 1970’s. As I said before, I don’t recall what the issue with them was. When I got started, jumpsuits had small wings (relatively speaking) in the arms, and balloon suits were used by large jumpers and camerapersons. By the middle ‘80’s the big suits were gone as the benefits of higher freefall velocities became apparent.
I stopped by a Drop Zone last summer to catch up a little, and I see that things have changed. I checked out the winged suit that the camera folks wear, and I see that some jumpers wear these cosmic looking RW helmets. The new gear is micro sized, and I understand that you have to fly these new high performance rigs all the way to the ground, else you be drilled into it. I stopped jumping before the PD canopies hit the market. I understand that they pretty much became the standard; maybe they still are.
I got into Tandem and AFF on the ground floor, before the Tandem rigs were equipped with drogues. I could probably be talked into making another leap; although I would have to jump a Grandpa sized rig in order to preserve a little mobility for the home stretch.
Attached is a shot of a good old fashioned Para Commander that I stuffed into a no parking zone. (Check out that jumpsuit) The pavement, power lines and autos helped to ensure that a generous amount of adrenaline was always tapped. That stuff is like horsepower; you can never have too much.
