Very disappointed in the 2011 CVO Street Glide paint quality...
« on: October 30, 2010, 09:51:02 PM »

Well I have a deposit on a Kryptonite and a Inferno Orange bike.  The Inferno Orange bike came in Thursday, so I went to go look at it yesterday.  Let me tell you, my 10 year old daughter could have painted the bike better.  All tins need to be replaced except the rear fender and the saddle bags.  The lowers were sprayed with too much clear coat and was dripping off the bottom, when they painted the pinstripe on the tank the gold dripped all over the black and then they left it and clear coated over it.  The bat wing fairing edges were not painted black or the orange part and HAIR HAIR HAIR all in the paint.  The dealer is going to contact Harley about this.

Isn't this the first year the CVO's are not painted in a separate building?

This is the first year the bikes are assembled on the regular assembly lines, but that doesn't mean they are painted in the regular paint operation.  In fact, I would doubt that anything has changed with regard to the painted part supplier, since the regular paint operation isn't set up for anything more ambitious than simple tutone paint jobs.

There have been many instances of really lousy paint on CVO's, and after the problems peaked in '06 they seemed to be getting better.  Unfortunately, better isn't the same as consistently good, as you found.  Quality Control isn't a high priority at H-D; they don't control quality, quality happens by accident when and if the stars are properly aligned and the gods feel generous.  Obviously the gods were taking the day off when the parts in question were painted, and the stars weren't aligned properly when the assembly plant accepted the poorly painted parts and installed them on the bike.

I'd suggest that you insist the parts all be replaced before purchasing the bike, if you are still planning to purchase it.  Otherwise, you may find yourself even more unhappy when they feed you some BS about the paint meeting their standards, or they don't replace the parts on a timely basis, or they replace them with something just as bad or worse, or manage to damage something during all the replacements.  Read some of the threads on the major paint issues from 2006 in the CUSE boards.

You are exactly right. I did not buy it. I told them to contact HD and see what is going to happen first. He said that they might just try to fix the problems. I told him no way I wanted the parts replaced before I bought it. We will see what happens. I may just wait for the kryptonite one now. The dealer could not believe the paint job either. He brought out little round orange stickers to put next to the defects and soon we were tearing the stickers in half because we were running out of them.

The paint on my 2010 SESG tank had dirt specks when I took delivery. I am now on my 3rd gas tank. This one is the best of the 3 but still not perfect.

I found a huge run in the clearcoat on the tank of my Black Diamond the minute I looked at when it arrived at the dealer. It looked like a fuel drip starting right at the filler and running all the way down the side of the tank. I told him I didn't want it. Lucky for me they had gotten 2 of the same bikes that day and I took the other one.

The paint on my Inferno Orange was almost perfect. There was a scratch in the paint around one of the windshield screws. It wasn't a paint defect just an assembly defect. They ordered a new fairing. The only thing i found that was chitty was that on the inside part of the saddlebags, they left it pretty raw. Paint strips overlapped etc. It was like they knew it would not show so they didn't bother. Otherwise it was very nice.

Due to the cutbacks at the MoCo, I wonder if quality has gotten from bad to worse.... :confused5:

Harley invented a new rating system for warranting paint deficiencies lately. Category D applies to all defects hidden and with no effect to safety or durability - those parts will not be warranted at all. So they do not bother any more indeed

Maybe they concentrated on ensuring all the Australian delivered bikes were of a better quality - I spent an hour alone with mine in dealership before pickup looking for any paint issues - I found a small chip on a panel under the batwing fairing that appeared to have been painted over - dealer will be replacing that panel with no issue - overall I feel the quality of the paint on mine is excellent.

OK. you guys are scaring the hell out of me :'( My bike is scheduled to be built this Thursday, Nov 4th (or that's what the stealer sez). I had to order from a dealer 200 miles away because the dealer 5 miles up the road wasn't sure he could get me a B&O bike. Bad paint, LED failures, throttle body problems, is this a good bike or not? Has anyone purchased a bike from one dealer and had to go to another for warranty? I purchased a few bikes from the local dealer and I know he isn't happy I went elsewhere for this one.

The dealer called me today to tell me that he thinks Harley will just try to fix the problems not replace the parts. I told him to forget it. I went to another dealer an put a deposit on a 2011 cvo ultra that is coming in any day.

I thought the same thing, but for the money they are charging for these bikes, they better have there chit together :nixweiss:.  I can go buy a Honda or a BMW for half the price and have a better paint job than what I saw that day.  Plus when you go to sell it, the new buyer will see all the imperfections and deduct it off the price they are going to pay YOU NOT HD.  They need to step up to the plate and have some better quality control.  I have seen TWO 2011 CVO Ultras and neither one had anything wrong with the paint.  I quess that is why the CVO SG were on hold for a while and the CVO Ultras were not....

I was thinking about it hard last night and the CVO ultra is a better deal.  I was going to add the tourpak, the lights on the tourpak, and some other accessories and i was going to be over $38K and still not have some of the extras the Ultra has (ie. heated seats and hand grips, nav, the new bad ass hammock seat, remote locking saddlebags and fork, cb, drivers backrest, highway pegs...) I am going to add the 19" front and 18" rear agitators and ipod connector and I will still be about the same price as the SG with more options.  The only thing I cant add is the tweeters in the dash.  My last CVO Ultra I had the hogtunes dash pod tweeters and they worked perfect, so I am going to add them and the Hawgwired in your face system to really wake the sound system up.  I will keep you guys posted on the progress on the Ultra.  The dealer said it shipped out Oct 29th. :bananarock:

 >:(

Ths bastiges I bought my 09cuse4 from wanted me to sign a "paint waiver"...I told em to wipe Willies arse with it..

Lucky it is silver so all the defects are really hard to see, I think, I havent seen the bike in near 2 weeks, the local is sweating me on W issues.

Comp sprocket, walking flywheel, dead seat heat, warped front rotors..It ran good the 1st 10k, after I dropped 15 hun on pipes, tuners and a tune.

 :(

I am liking the K 1600 GTL beemer, soul or no soul, idgaf, I just want it to run...and at a 130 ft/lbs with 160 bhp it appears that it will...not even needing a tune to cool it down...

I just went by another dealer that just got a Black Orange street glide and same chit.  The paint was terrible.  I hope I will not have this with the CVO Ultra...

Good luck on the guys that are waiting for their bikes.  Make sure you go over with a fine tooth comb!!!!

I dropped into a Motor Co dealer whilst currently on holidays in Queensland - they were in the process of assembling a brand new orange / black for a new lucky owner - I spent a good while looking it over - it was absolutely flawless. We must have the pick of the litter here in Oz.

My local tried to get me the bike I wanted but they could not get the B/O SESG. They did their best but finally just admitted we can't get it. I found one in Wichita and bought it from the Wichita dealer. I felt bad too but my local dealer totally understood. I still bought the warranty and a bunch of chrome from the local so they are still making money. When I took delivery of the bike I noticed a nick in the fairing (not a paint problem per say, scratched when assembling the fairing). The dealer in Wichita ordered the fairing and shipped to my local dealer who replaced it no problem. I also lost the rear LH tail lamp and they replaced that too. The factory pays the dealer for warranty work so they aren't losing any money. And HD dealers make more money on accessories anyway I bet. I always heard the bike was just the down payment on the accessories.

BTW, my paint was flawless other than the nick.

Hi DavidG,

not really - what MoCo pays for the warranty work will in many cases not even cover the paperwork and sending the defect parts to them. They don't refund the time actually needed for the work but ridiculous standard times - and the hassle with them until they accept a claim nobody pays for and it's permanently growing too ...

And HD dealers make more money on accessories anyway I bet. I always heard the bike was just the down payment on the accessories.

in Germany dealers get around 14-19% on bikes and 40-45% on OEM motorcloth, parts and accessories. Most couldn't live from sales however, it's their work that pays the rent  ;)

You can't single out the MoCo for this one.....Car dealers get screwed the same way by the manufacturers as well.

David g you are lucky on your paint is all I can say

Call me lucky as well. I picked up my B/O on Tuesday and it is flawless as well. I held my breath reading this post waiting for my bike. Waxed it last night and couldn't find a flaw anywhere.

mine came pretty much flawless.  the only issue i had was the section of the dash with the CVO on it.  i had some little round moisture like spots showing up.  they ordered me a new one though without question.

other than easily swirling soft paint/clear, i'm happy with the paint.

I have seen six 2011 sesg at the dealer, two of each color (except green :( ) and none of them seemed to have any kind of paint problems. I didnt go over each one with a fine tooth comb or any thing, but i lusted over a one or two of em for quite a few minutes.  And it sounds like H-D seems to be fixing the problems anyway. :2vrolijk_21:

Good Luck!!!

The dealer I ordered the B/O one from, that had all the problems, called me today and said that they wanted me to pay for the bike or they are going to put it back up for sale.  I told them NO WAY IN HELL was I going to pay for a bike that is not fixed yet.  They said the parts have been ordered and it may take 6 to 8 weeks to get the parts. My CVO Ultra shipped and the other dealer is expecting it any day.  Ordered the 19" and 18 " Black Agitators for it and the IPOD hook up.  We will see what happens next....

Way to stick to your guns....why take something you will not be happy with. As bad as I wanted the 2011 Street Glide I would have walked away if I did not get the colour I wanted too. Now I just have to pray the paint is good on it.

Good news is they are fixing the paint problems, bad news is I'm running out of rides back and forth from the Harley dealer. On Fairing #3 witch is fairing #2 sent back to get repainted ,Thank god the dealership had the old one to put back on while the new one is sent back to get re done other wise I would be with out a new bike for up to 6 weeks so far new dash ,insert 4 cow bells and 3rd fairing ,runs in the paint dirt in the paint and missed paint with clear coat over it.new seat.I know why louder stereo so don't have to hear engine noise, lol anyway after front end wobble gets fixed and new fairing and cowbell are up to par tire on order hopefully that will make it ok than will be Happy, will think really hard about spending $32,500 on frustrations next time,I thought the 09 cvo road glide that i bought was bad with the seat issues was I wrong, guess the road glide put a curse on me for switching to cvo street glide

I was checking out a 2011 b/o sesg, the lower speaker covers in the fairing lowers were a different color orange than the lower fairing, not bad for 5k over msrp.  ???

Mine had a scratch in the outer fairing the dealer showed me before delivery. He said they would replace it. It came in last week and they installed it. I went home and started detailing it and found little specks in the black under the clear coat. I took it back to the dealer and they had the HD rep come look at it. He said it was within spec and I'd have to live with it. After he left (I was pissed), I had the dealer put the old one back on. I'd rather live with a tiny scratch than obviously defective paint work. That blows my mind that this is what they call their premium ride; just not premium quality.

What a bunch of whiners!!!!!! What do you expect for only $35,000.00??? (just kidding)
And if you remember it was only a few months ago that the HD assembly crew threatened to strike for more money!!!!???

What a joke!

I must report that my bike came in pretty much perfect with regard to paint. Also it is by far the coolest MC I have ever owned so far. I am very pleased with it. CD

I was worried when I saw this thread so I went out to the garage to take a look. I have to say that my 2011 Autumn Haze paint is really good. No color mismatches, no hairs, no blemishes.

By the way, a litlle later this morning I am installing my new V &H Dresser Duals and V & H Hi-Output Mufflers. Can't wait to hear the sound.

I have been looking for issues on mine and have not found any.  I put it under real bright lights and the paint all matches.   What other issues are you seeing??

I didn't have any paint issues from the factory.  However, the dealership did do a "wipe down" with the Harley gloss in prep for me coming to pick the bike up.  I normally never let anyone ever wash any of my vehicles at all.  Of course, their wiping created a lot of light spider webbing that I could see, but I am very critical.  I took the bike home and washed, clayed, and polished the bike and I have an absolutely flawless paint now.  To my dealers credit, they did note that the front wheel had a very very small blemish and they were already replacing it before I arrived to pick the bike up.  I am pleased.

Mine looked great at the dealer ship.  hen I got it in my garage with brighter lights it looked pretty poor.  There are fine scratches all in the paint and they had to order me a ne piece that goes down the center of the tank.  The dealer is going to have a guy come out and try to buff out the scratches.  We will see!

Worth mentioning from the multiple vehicle related forums people rarely start a thread with, everything works, no issues.
