Title: Cleaning black engine parts on Krypto
Post by: LETS_ROLL on August 06, 2011, 03:12:25 AM
Finding out that keeping the black engine parts on the Krypto a bit tougher than chrome.  Anyone found anything good out there.  After a good cleaning the parts look a bit cloudy to me, don't have that shine luster if you will.  Let's Roll

Gabe, look for a product called Pig Spit (you couldn't make that up).  The Pig Spit company makes a few different Pig Spit products.  For engines and other similar parts you want "The Original" Pig Spit.  It's the best I've seen for freshening up an engine's appearance.  I used it on the red cylinders and heads on the red bike.  It's also a snap to use.  Basically spray it on and walk off and leave it.

My bad....  Here's the company website:

At least here in the midwest it's not an uncommon product to see on display at bike shops.

Don, thanks I will give it a shot hope that helps on those pesky powder coated parts.  I might even have some of that on the garage shelf.

I think that the MoCo has a product in their line of cleaning/detailing supplies that is similar to Pig Spit, can't remember the name, but essentially the same stuff for blacked out engines.  Pig Spit is all I've ever used on Ole Granny's motor.. 8)..works great!  spyder

Used that on my Fatboy to brighten the black engine up... here it is...

(http://www.harley-davidson.com/media/images/productphotos/PNA/93600002_M_26af8.jpg) Harley-DavidsonĀ® Engine Brightener (http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448775895&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302290863&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302290863&locale=en_US&bmUID=1312636513181&bmLocale=en_US)

Make your engine look new again. H-DĀ® Engine Brightener refreshes and rejuvenates tired wrinkle black finishes on engine cases, cylinder fins, covers, or anywhere else the color has faded or lost its luster. This finish restorer cleans deep into the wrinkle black surface, and "moisturizes" the finish to return the original satin sheen. Just spray it on, let it soak in, and wipe away for a fresh look.

That is for wrinkle black.

Have you tried detail spray and a microfiber cloth?

I used to use this when I had a black engine:

Yep, I use Pig Spit too, great stuff. More of a protectant than a cleaner, brings back the dark black to the crinkle finish on the motor, can get it on the chrome and paint without any problems. Like Don said, just spray it on and your done, beads water for several months.

Yes that works great on the engine and the works.  But the KRYPTO and I think new serg have that powder coated shiny parts that are a little different.  Anyhow I looked and have both the pig spit and the new Harley spray.  We'll see.  Let's Roll

Just watch that powdercoat - it's so soft that the slightest rub in the wrong direction will scratch it  >:(

On my FXDX I used to use S100 to clean it and Armor All to keep it looking new.  Still do the same on my '03 RK.

As far as applying some type treatment to your black engine - I saw a detailer at a bike rally using one of those cheap foam disposable paint brushes to apply a luster product to the engine.  It worked great between the engine fins and he didn't have to worry about dragging a rag over the chrome accents.

Okay, I am pretty picky when it comes to detailing.  I only use microfiber cloths and regular use an orbital on my cars.

I picked up the krypto today and noticed that the gloss black engine parts were a bit foggy.  A simple spray down with a detail spray and microfiber towel clean them right off to show quality.  The matte black engine pieces likely require a different technique, but don't use the same product on the engine that you use on the gloss black components.

Nice detail product web site.  What product did you use on gloss black parts. Let's Roll

I regularly use this on my bikes: http://www.meguiarsdirect.com/product_detail.do?q=4616

Spray on, spread with one side of microfiber towel, wipe off with other side.  Great for removing bugs and touching up between washes.  Worked great on the gloss black engine parts today on the krypto, these parts should be treated like paint.

I would say that you should never use a non-microfiber towel.  I cringe when I got to rally's and I see someone using water and a regular towel to wipe a bike down.

I just used Armor All on gloss black motors, this was my V65 after 21 years. Don't pick on my temp fuel line replacement!

Most of the suggestions above are for black engines, ie: textured parts. The black in question is the powdercoat on the Rocker boxes, side cam chest cover etc. These are totally different than the black (or silver, early & gray, later CVO engines cases, cyl heads) The powdercoat is very hard, same stuff as the frame is coated with. Clean and treat if like the frame, do not use harsh stuff like abrasives, chemicals etc. I would personally stay away from straight S100, althought diluted would probably be O.K. Plain ole car wash soap & water with micro fiber sponge. Be careful with reg paint detailers on engine parts, some of them were never designed for high heat cycles the engine will force on them and they will fail and could fail chemically damage the surface (extreme situation, but possible). Contact Meguairs or Mothers and ask them what they recommend on powder coat if you need to brighten it vs opionions.

The powder coat is very soft and scratches very easily.

I know people who are satisfied with S100 products available through our local Harley dealers, but I use Pig Spit exclusively for the engine black. I'm a bike detailer and this is the best product I've found. Perfect results every time!
