Title: Voided powertrain warranty
Post by: rkussy on May 08, 2019, 08:46:28 PM
Is there any place to see if a bike has been flagged besides having the dealer tell you at the time they find out? I have a thunder max tuner and always put the stock one in the saddle bag for the dealer to use if plugged into the computer. If they screwed up and plugged to the thunder max and my bike could be flagged and not know it.

I am not an expert but I always understood that when you use a tuner it leaves a finger print on the ECM that cannot be erased.

Maybe call a dealer you don't use and tell them you are looking at a bike and could they check the VIN and let you know the service records, warranty claims and repairs, etc. Then you can ask how long the warranty is still valid for.

Playing with fire!

I don't know that I'd trust a dealership to remove your T-Max and reinstall the stock ECM every time they connect your bike to their service equipment.  That is something you need to do yourself if you want to make sure it gets done.  And don't forget, if you have to go to a different dealership while on the road, they may not be willing to play the same games as your selling dealership.  Not every dealership is willing to risk tampering fines and possible loss of a franchise.

As previously mentioned, you could always ask another dealership to check your VIN in the system for service history and warranty status.  They can do that without connecting the bike to the Harley system.

Hum, so the thundermax actually replaces the factory ECM?

Very interesting. I did not realize that. Thought it was a tuner.

Guess I have to question how this works with mileage? Seems like you could ride many miles with it and switch back to the stock ECM and have lower mileage? Or is the mileage somehow saved/stored in the speedo?

Mileage is stored in the BCM (body control module) I believe.

The T-Max stores and changes your gas mileage is not stored in the BCM. If you look at your thunder Max Map you will see the changes in your AFR by observing the breadcrumbs. The breadcrumbs are the changes the breadcrumbs are the little dots underneath or above the original Map. It does not necessarily give you better gas mileage depending on the changes you make to your bike. I've been using a T-Max when they are called zippers T-Max. They replaced the Harley's original ECM and does not leave no fingerprint because you're pulling your original Harley ECM out of the bike and using 18 mm 02 sensor bonds close loop instead of Harley's 12 mm 2 wire open loop. With the T-MaxMax your now using 18 mm close loop five wire.
