Title: How many MPG's do you get ??
Post by: grandpadoc on July 09, 2008, 04:12:57 PM
I usually don't care about this topic, but because I was curious, I checked it on my 00 SERG yesterday. The bike is bone stock and it got 45 mpg's with one up and mixed traffic. Hey, that might make us green or something. Doc

38-40 mpg on the 07 jester.   Above 80 mph, theoretically, less than 35 mpg.

Heard a song about a feller with green teeth once.  Never been green myself.....

I imagine two up with the Bushtec would send me into the 30's. I'll check it next trip.

Close to what my buddies with trailers (Bushtecs) get - 30-35.

I notice below 70 mph - easy country roads - can get 40 or a little better just cruising.  Above 70 starts dropping like a rock the way this bike is tuned.  But its FUN to ride.

Typically about 170 miles per tank (36-37 mpg) on the 05 cherry, 185 (38-39 mpg) on the 04 pumpkin

The last time I checked, I was getting 35-37 mpg on my 08 SEUC.

38 - 45, always one-up. Wife's almost-stock 88 RK consistently gets 3 mpg more than me (and she has no fear of the throttle).

Haven't pulled the trailer with the SERG yet.  So no data there.  Pulling the trailer with the SEEG at 75mph on the interestate sees 33-37 depending on winds.  Without the trailer both bikes are getting in the 38-40 range.  Don't know for sure but that has to be close.  Both have done 45 on tank fulls on state roads that required 55-60 mph.

Last Saturday I did a lot of freeway at 75-85 and got about 32mpgs. I'm sure that if I dropped the speed to 55-65 I'd get much better. Last summer running through the mountains and elevation I was in the low to mid 40s. My build is NOT that radical, and I'm running the Zippers kit with MAP 307. But Zippers did tell me that my mpgs would come down, but the bike would run better and cooler.

08 SERK a couple of miles better, less weight and drag

I can get right at 40 on the Jester, if I keep it in the 55-65 mph range....very hard to do with that bike.  When I get into the 75-85 mph range, then my mpg drops to a numbing 30-32 mpg.   On the 08 Street Glide that's another totally different story.  No matter what speed I ride that bike at, I get 40-42mpg, or just over 240 a tank.  That 96 is a good running engine, but it just doesn't have the "poop" that the Jester has...the Jester is way more seat-of-the-pants fun to ride.   ;)

Of course the  :pumpkin: is faster.

The pumpkin had seepage around the cylinder bases at around 10K.  If you have it apart, you can't put it back together stock can you?

Checked it several times this past weekend on the interstate. Running a true 78 - 80 (82-85 on the speedo) I was getting right at 33.5. I would like to see more than that and may take some fuel out at those cells to raise it up a bit. Ran great, but would like to get 5 more.

Seems like we're all very similar.  Like most reported if running scenic roads at 55 or so I'll get almost 40 or a tad better.  Interstate type riding at 75-80 drops it down to 36 or so if no headwind.  Seems very sensitive to headwinds which dramatically reduce mileage.  Also pulling the Bushtec will drop it 2-3 mpg.

37 for me. 2up most of the time and usually above 60mph (well above).

I kept a written record last year on the Sturgis trip.  Completely stock on mostly flat interstate at 70-75 it was doing 42 to 45 depending on the wind.  The best two tanks - go figure - were in the Hills doing 50-60 mph on longer rides when it went over 50 mpg.  I was surprised.  We'll see what it does now that it isn't completely stock.

I'm in the 40-42 range, most of time riding 2 up, Two weeks ago coming back from N.C. last 40 miles or so was 80 mph or better it dropped it to 38 mpg.

Yeah it is sad...but with pay at the pump, you get the receipt, write down the mileage on it, get home, fill out spreadsheet...

I see a theme here. If the bike is run at speeds greater than 70mph, the mpgs drop, even more if you ride into a headwind. But at nice cruising speeds the mpgs are decent. My best always comes up in the mountains on slow winding roads. The worst I got was running from Billings MT to Cody WY. I was going over 100mph WOT over the flat land and the mpgs dropped into the high 20s.

I wish the cruise control would work at 100+. Sometimes ya just got to blow out those miles while listing to road tunes and drinking a cold one.  Doc

On the nana I get 32-35 neither speed nor head winds seem to effect it much.
Of course at 25mph don't much matter. (I said it before Ken could) ;D

I really don't care what I get, but it's in the 33 range.  I don't mean that sarcastically, it just doesn't matter if it's 30 or 50 mpg.

I ride mostly 2 up and we carry a bit more weight than most probably do here.  Most of my riding is country with hills, curves etc at probably less then 60 mph.  Once in a while we do hit the freeway and run up to maybe 75, but I've not checked it for more than just the average.

I have V&H Dresser Duals and their Oval mufflers, HD SE AC and PCMIII.  Other than that I'm stock.

Not having had the bike all that long, I am still trying to figure out my mileage...but for the most part I am getting 40 "ish" - that is with a 250lb one up.

I do have a bad habit of really hammering it off the lights, :bananarock: and do only around town on it at this time.

Makes a difference if you have a SERK or SE Ultra Classic, the more fairing you have the mpg goes down a bit, then throw in headwind, hills and traffic on the highways and the difference adds up. I (08SERK) crossed from Flagstaff AZ to Newport Beach CA on I-40/I-15 with heavy winds at 85~100 for many hours and still got 35~38 mpg, without any winds running 80 for hours I still get 40+, stay below 80 and the mileage creeps up to 43~45.

Never ran at over 100 for any length of time, cruise control doesn't work much over 80 and my eyes don't like the road going by that fast.

38-40 at 75-85 mph on the highway

about 42 in "mixed" city / highway which means I live in a semi-rural area so my speeds on side / back roads is between 40-55 with few stops. In other words, ideal driving conditions.  Except I do goose the chit out of it off the line pretty often.

Today I made it a point to run about 70-75, and got 38mpgs. I'm sure 65-70mph without a headwind will get me in the low 40s. I also filled up with 87 instead of 91. It was fairly hot today, temps in the mid to high 90s, and I did several throttle roll ons from cruising speed. So far no ping with my build. I think I'll try another tank or two of 87 and see what happens. Last summer I got stuck out in 87 octane land and had to run it a couple of times. The bike did fine.

On stock TC 96 engines  yes, you can run 87. On CVO or built engines they suggest premium. On build engines with higher compression you HAVE to run premium. My OEM 95 M&M engine used to ping ALL the time.

BTW, at 205 CCP, and intAKe closing at 48, i can still run regular!

Mark,
99.5% of the time I'm without my windshield. Altough I just got my new Clearview windshield so a trip is being planned to see how it does. My speeds are anywhere from 50-80 just depending on what road I'm riding. A lot of my riding is mixed between in town and cruising. I did a thread on running out of gas in the SERK section where I talked about the guage craping out. I ran the 5 gallon tank bone dry and racked up 236 on the trip meter. That equals out to 47.2 mpg. I got that same milage last summer on a day trip also.

Spike,

It will be interesting to see what happens with the windshield as that provides a lot of wind resistance. Someone once said it was akin to pushing a sheet of plywood into the wind. And in my experience, the faster your ride with the windshield, the more gas it drinks.

Doc, making the assumption that there's not just a glitch somewhere you might find yours to be nuts on.  The SEEG here is about 5 mph off at 75mph.  The SERG matches the GPS almost exactly though.

I rode a little last summer with the stock windshield without a drop but this new Clearview is 8" taller so I will almost bet my mpg's will drop. There's nothing aerodynamic about a piece of plywood standing straight up!

I ensured a good break-in of the engine. Let the engine run light, no lo-rev dunking w high cyl pressures, modest speeds, a few hot accels but not all the time (I had my first true rear-wheel skid the other day, unleashed full throttle in straight acc 2nd gear onto a freeway. Wheel spun lose on wet asphalt. Unpleasant, but no harm done).

I never expected this mileage on a Harley, though, especially not with stage 1 installed. However, it might change over time, whatta I know. For now, I fill the tank with 3 us gals every 150 miles on touring trips.

The bike has 4500 miles now, running totally trouble-free, which is also a bit above my expectations. Well Done, Pennsylvania!

You know, Dagbre, now that I think back, my SEEG gave about that same mileage for the 1st 50K miles and then it seemed to gradually slide down considerably w/o any changes (other than suspected lower quality gasoline) to 5 to 7 mpg less.  Kinda got me concerned....esp. since it hit me right when the cost of fuel escalated so much.  Not that there's anything wrong with that... ???....just saying.... ;).  har!  spyder

After about 10000. miles I am averaging 40.5 mpg. but each tank can be all over the place, Have charted out most of my fills and have had anywhere from 32 to 56 mpg, The High and the low both came on the same trip from Spokane to Omsk 150 miles driving the speed limit, It also appears that the better milage tanks are 6th gear at 75, or 3rd and 4th in the hills. 60 miles per hour in 6th seems to be the worst.
Makes no sense to me.

60 MPH in 6th is hard on the motor, you're lugging it, better to run in 5th at 60, bet you will get better fuel milage, even if you are turning more RPM's. It took me awhile to get use to it but i do not get into 6th until 65 or above.

'08 SERK with Nightrider XiED.  While recently riding my Colorado mountain passes (Monarch, Lizardhead, Wolfcreek, LaVeta), 1-up, averaging 70MPH and leading the pack, I got a low of 48mpg and a high of 53mpg.  This is pretty much eqaul to my old '02 FLHR, but I get to 70MP a heck of a lot faster!  :2vrolijk_21:

wow---reading this thread is interesting.   I don't think you're going to believe me.

I ride hard,  alot.  I'm going 185-205 miles and filling up at 4.9 to 5.1 gallons.  If I'm pussy footin around 220-240 miles per tank---5.1 to 5.3 gallons.  If my limited math ability works that puts me in the 40-45 mpg easily.

06  103---decked heads 30 thousandths, new rings, stage one, SS 570 gear drive cam, vance & hines pro pipe all done when new.  took me 28k miles too loosen up and get this kind of mileage but I'm liking it!!

Did 600 mile trip yesterday, from Louisville, KY to Richmond, VA and averaged 38 running cruise at 75 mph. I did'nt know what to expect but I guess it's about average after reading the other posts here.

Finally getting 32-37 cruising 75-80. Expecting better with new cams in two weeks and I will post the results after my trip to northern California the 19 through 29. Running Rhinehart true duals, Stage 1 and a Super SERT with a tweaked canned map that was very close to this set up and waiting for a dyno after the cams are installed.

When we first got this sled we rode to Hollister for family stuff and went 117 miles and needed 4.7 gallons! Last weekend with the CVO So. Cal. GTG, riding 90-110 MPH we all stopped in Santa Maria and we had 183 miles on the odometer and I took 3.7. Lil-Bit saw the trip meter and was shocked! Never seen that many miles on a tank before. Guess we have to ride at that speed more often ;D.

We just got back from three days up the SoCal coast and got 41-43 mpg's average on three fill ups with two up and pulling the Bushtec. We were on 5mph switchbacks to 80mph straights and that trailer really handled well. There is something to be said about not getting top heavy with T-Bags and full tourpacks. Here is the bike at Santa Maria Harley Davidson.  Doc

I was getting 40 mpg running 80-85. I took it to the dealer for warrenty work. Replaced aircleaner housing and filter (cracked and fell off) with high flow Harley part. Milage immediately dropped to 34-36. I just completed and 3,000 mile run, this milage remained down the whole trip, despite slowing my speeds way down to compensate. The dealership swears they didn't touch anything else, no reflash, etc. I've ordered a 2nd replacement K&N to get back where I was pre-dealership intervention.

how's this for mpg's...

If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in Delta Airlines one year ago, you would have $49.00 today. If you had purchased $1000 of shares in AIG one year ago, you would have $33.00 today. If you had purchased $1000 of shares in Lehman Brothers one year ago, you would have $0.00 today.

But if you had purchased $1000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then sold the aluminum cans for recycling you would have received $214.00.

Based on the above, and given the state of today's financial world, the best current investment plan is to drink heavily & recycle. It is called the 401-Keg. A recent study found that the average American walks about 900 miles a year. Another sturdy found that Americans drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year.

That means that, on average, Ameaicans get about 41 miles to the gallon.  :drink: :drink: :drink:  Doc

The Road Glide had some interesting variations on the Maggie Valley trip.

Around home local riding, 40-42.
Interstate normal, 38-40
Interstate pulling the trailer, 30-32
Up in the mountains, no trailer, 47-49

I see the same thing Spyder.  On any fuel injected bike I've had.  In the Rockies or back east.  The effect starts dissipating above 6500 or so.  It's rare we've to have extended stretches above that altitute in the lower 48 anyway.  But between about 3000 and 6500 the bikes just purr and start sipping fuel less and less.  Gotta love it.

Amen Spyder.  My geographic location might not offer more than being a place to get anywhere from.  But I can do that.  Can wake up early one morning and be in most of the eastern mountains that night, the same for a good piece of the Rockies and all of those hills they call the Boston Mountains or Ozarks more locally.  Makes for nice weekenders sometimes :2vrolijk_21: .

Been getting 37-40 mpg riding back roads at 60 or less and autobahn riding where I set the cruise a hair under 80 and occasionally find myself 90+ when passing-riding solo on a stock 2008 SERK.

37 mpg riding 2 up last weekend on the autobahn at 80 with a short stretch of WOT to let the wife know what 100+ felt like.

Every now and then you'll find a 120 km/h zone and the usual speed zones around construction, but everywhere else is still as fast as you want to go.

I watched a program on this on Discovery Channel. Traffic conjestion has all but ruined the Autobahn. Very few places you can get much above 55 let alone 100. True, there's no speed limit, but it was built back in Hitler's day and is mostly two lanes in each direction. With all the on/off ramps, it's simply not possible to drive or ride WFO

Depends on where you go.  A3 between Frankfurt and Wuerzburg is always bad due to the never ending construction and the insane amount of traffic every morning.  A6 between Ansbach and Nürnberg is always bad on Fridays, usually a 10 mile long stretch of solid traffic.  A9 from Nürnberg to Munich has a few good long stretches that have 3 lanes each direction where you can spend a little time in the left lane WOT before you have a VW, BMW, or Audi station wagon that appears out of no where, passes you, and disappears off in the distance.  After 3 years here, it still surprises me when I'm cruising at 80-85 and I have someone pass me like I'm standing still.

The are 4 reasons I love driving/riding on the autobahns here.

1. You are required to yield to faster traffic behind you
2. you can only be in the left lane if you are passing
3. by law, trucks are not allowed on the autobahn on Sundays
4. it's illegal to pass on the right.

Usually the left lane is open to pass and people actually use their blinkers to pass.  Once I set my cruise at 80, I can usually leave it there while riding in the right lane and pulling into the left lane to pass.  Took a 200 mile autobahn ride today and only once did I hit traffic that brought me to a stop for 30 sec or so and did the stop and go thing for 5 min.  Other than that, I spend most of the day riding 70-80 mph.

Not that it's legal, but you can cruise stretches of the American interstates out west here at 100 mph all day long and not see squat for traffic. Very little police prescence on these highways for reasons unknown to me. If you slow down when you see signs noting construction areas you will very rarely get into trouble. And if you in a car when it's like 120 degrees outside, fughedaboutit. Ain't no cop gonna get out of his cruiser when it's that hot outside.

...or even around here, that road from Amboy to Goffs on the old 66 has been my personal favorite for many years. Two Niner to Amboy is a hoot too. Except for the River Run your mostly all by yourself and can ride on either side of the road. Nearly all my riding in the states was in Lower Alabama and Flora-bama and I never made any farther west than Mobile.  Too much traffic and too many cops to go WOT for very long.  Plus, I only had 750cc Honda Shadow that vibrated so bad over 90 I wasn't sure it would up over 100, but that didn't stop me from doing it every now and then.

May find myself at Fort Irwin in a couple of years and I look forward to riding those never ending highways out in the middle of no where.

42's my average on day to day riding! Some on the hiway and some in town! In Colorado last summer I saw some days where we got 8 to 10 miles to the gallon better!! One day 54 mpg! Had to check all those twice!!  ;D

Best so far is just a shade over 40 mpg..mixed driving, some highway, some back roads. Completely stock with 1100 miles. For comparison, '93 FLSTN: 50 mpg was pretty easy to get, '95 FLHRI with 95" kit, stock cams: 42-45 mpg.

Yea, parted company with it a year ago. Lot more power with the 110 CVO, but I always liked the feel of that old EVO ( no mods except rejet the carb, air filter and exhaust ) and tons of low end torque. Had it 18+ years, 70,000 miles.

Checked my 08 springer's MPG over 10 tank fill ups. Bike is stock except has V&H 2-2 big radius pipes, SERT and dyne tuned at stealer. Averaged approx. 49 MPG not distinguishing between city & highway. Analog oil temp dip stick reads 210-215 degrees after riding 70-75 MPH on highway for any length of time with ambient air temps in the upper 90's.  I'm pretty happy with that I guess, compared to some of the heat issues some of you bagger's have reported here.

The sesg3 sure does a whole lot better if I keep it under 75.   I'm averaging between 35-40 mpg.   I do notice the drop when I am hauling A$$.  I am very happy with this bike so far.   My new voltage reg sure helps    :)

yep, I've noticed the same increase in mileage with the use of all gasoline and even some of the stations that are selling it are charging more due to the better mileage (that's their story anyway).  Reckon with the drought and resulting corn loss, they'll re-think this stupid idea?  :-[ spyder

Maybe that explains why I have yet to see 40 on the SEUC.  38 has been tops, so far.  Ripping it up on Saturday, it only dropped to 35, though, so that's good.  Same riding with the ol' SEEG only delivered 32.

Not enough, 30 to 34 MPG depending on how I ride. I think I need a good
tune to fix the problem.

I did.  It made the long-distance rides a lot more comfortable and less fatiguing, but that 6-speed didn't do a thing for fuel mileage, even though it dropped the RPM by about 500. :nixweiss:

Nothing I do is economical. :2vrolijk_21:

Just got back from 5k mile roadtrip and averaged 47 mpg sat about 5-10mph over speed limit on the open road  usual fill was at between 250-275 miles and only once put in more than 5.5 gallons  ...was pretty proud of getting 6.03 gallons in the 6 gal tank and that wasnt all the way to to top either

Same with my SEURG. A couple of times I've gotten 44 MPG.

I NEVER got over 40 MPG with my 2009 SEUC. IMHO 'the Shark' cuts through the air better than 'the Bat'.  ;)

Cruising 55-60mph, I got as high as 52.3mpg.  On the interstate cruising 75-80, she drops down in the low to mid 40's.
Fullsac Stage II, with a tune from C&S.

Best Fuel economy 47 mpg
Worst Fuel Economy 35.2 (probably after i used smart tuning)

I was averaging around 42-43 but the engine was always pinging when I pulled a mountain. Zepka's tweaked my map by retarding the timing and richening it up. It runs a lot better at low rpm's now but I still have some pinging. I've lost power and about 4 mpg so I'm not happy yet. He's going to make some more adjustments and upload the revised map for me.

I'm using octane boost now and that helps a little but I know my problems are caused by the crappy fuel we're being forced to buy !

Twist wrist is the key. Just back from 2900+ trip through Colorado and South Dakota. Ranged from 36-53 primarily based on speed. 36 was at 75+ on the highways and upper 40's was cruising in the hills outside of Sturgis. Averaged 41.5. Enjoy checking and documenting the tanks but only for my AR curiosity. Like the earlier post says, it's cheaper than therapy and a dang good time!

Riding in the country side, windy roads, up and down hills, speed varying from 80klms (50mph), 120klms (75mph) and occasional but only a few times to stretch the legs 140klms (86mph).

Two up we got 76.5kpl (49mpg)

Interesting topic, not that it matters to me all that much but,
I have found my 88" Softail only gets 35 max with easy riding.
My 93" will get 45
My 96" TC got the best at about 46
The 103" TC with warmed over motor can only get about 40-42
The 113" and 124" S&S with G carbs managed 42-44!! Go figure.
