Been a while since I last posted.
I have a 97 heritage Springer.
The Evo is bored and stroked.
Piece work with parts is parts
mixed and matched
It's got about 89 inches.
Single fire Headquarters ignition.
and bla bla bla
Thing goes good
ride it hard at about 90 to 100 mph
still pleanty to giddy up
has great snap
after about 45 minutes to an hour of this speed the power cuts right out.
The lights and horn and blinkers all work fine.
So I say Batt is good.
I wait about 5 minutes and she starts right back up as if nothing had happened.
I go home put in a couple new plugs and a set of Multi flex Sumax wires
I check batt connections as well as connections at coil and replace the gas with fresh gas
I take her out for a ride again and ride under 80 mph for 3 or more hours.
Runs great.
I take it over to the hy-way and crank it up to 95 mph and about an hour later the same thing happens. Dead. So I wait 5 minutes and it starts right back up again.
I don't have access to meters and testers.
So, My question is should I pick up a single fire coil and try that next.
Or an I over looking something simple here.

I had a similiar experience with a 96 Heritage Softail quite a few years back - and replacing the coil solved the problem... :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks for your speedy reply.
I will try a new coil next.
I like it when the repair is on the low end of the funds spectrum.
I like having the options of a second bike, It's just plain O'fun.
But, sometimes I find myself ignoring the up keep on the '97 springer.
Especially when I ride my '03 Ultra most of the time. lol
I do need to be more diligent in the maintenance department.

Here is a quick, cheap test.
Try running a jumper wire from the battery + to the + side of the coil and see if it acts up.
You may have a wiring problem supplying voltage TO the coil that only acts up when hot. Things like the curcuit breakers, wiring to or from the stop run switch in the bars etc.
Of course connections at the coil need to be electrically and mechanically sound.

check the curcit breaker..had same issue,,new breaker was the cure ,,doubt its the coil

Headpan...I'm with you, ...i had a bad Main breaker on old 91 FLHS back around 1995, replaced it....no more problems :orange:

$10 or so will buy you an adequate multimeter at any of the auto parts stores, or the like. You can make a simple test lite from an 1156 bulb and 2 wires. Just solder the wires to the bulb contacts on the bottom. Cheap, works fine. I find it's easier to tin the wires first, then heat the contacts; as the contacts are nothing but solder anyway, so they melt QUICK! Once soft, the tinned wires will just push right in and stick great. You could also use an 1194 bulb or similar and have wire from the bulb to solder to, but then make sure you heavily tape these connections to prevent much/any movement, otherwise they'll break off the first itme you use the lite. Have fun!
