That's why I was asking Lew.  Is the tone it sends itself audible?  It's a bummer the bike is garaged for winter so I can't try it for real!

The way I understand it, it's a digital tone, and not audible to humans, or at least not to me.

Thanks Lew - that's what I thought too, but I had a guy say some time ago (which is when I started to think about this) that he could hear it.

Anyone else?

The whole reason for having this Roadtech one, when I already have a normal Garmin Zumo 590 (I've installed 595 firmware for the extra features)

how did you change the firmware and what extra features did you get?

Details of how to change it are here:

http://forum.gps-expert.nl/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1540

- Spotify support
- Garmin Adventurous Routing (with 3 slides to adjust preferences)
- Live tracking
- Better Whereto Menu
- Fatigue Warnings
- Advance Audible Rider Alerts (Animal and Railroad crossings, Schools, Curves, Slow Traffic and Speed Limit Reduction/Exceeded)
- Exchanging routes to zumo using Garmin Smartphone Link App (uses Bluetooth).

And for the users of the Roadtech mode, TPMS support.  You can still install the HD Dealer Location POI category, from: https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=5067

Some of the links in the article are dead now, but everything is still available elsewhere. The 595 Firmware is here: https://download.garmin.com/software/Zumo595_460.gcd

It's a lot easier than you think when you read the article - I did the Roadtech Zumo with a modified 590 firmware yesterday (to let me use maps at all!) and you can go back to the original firmware just as easily.

Hi Jim.  I saw this a few months back but didn't do it then.  Contacted Garmin and of course they said it couldn't be done.  May do it if you know for sure that my RT590 will still function as a RT and send nav prompts and my lifetime map updates will still be valid.  Wondering how Garmin Express would view it after the update - would it disassociate it from the 590 profile it now has?  Thanks in advance for your input and advice.

Yes, two people have independently said that doing it on an RT590 is fine and it keeps the interrupt for the prompts.  Check the 4th post from the top of this page for one of them:

http://forum.gps-expert.nl/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1540&sid=84e497ce64df9438f132c29960ecf1c7&start=135

Works fine in Express afterwards too. And yes, your lifetime upgrades still work exactly as before.  :2vrolijk_21:

There is one tiny hiccup, but it is no bother at all, in reality.  When you do any form of software upgrade, the device adds an extra section to the GarminDevice.xml file in the Garmin folder on the Zumo. That section apparently causes a problem with Mapsource (if you use it - I don't).  I deal with it my removing the extra lines in a freebie XML editor, then making the file read-only.  Next time you do an upgrade, un-read-only the file, do the upgrade, remove the section in the file again, and re-read-only it.  Takes a minute to do.  All covered in the article that I linked to earlier.

Thanks for the info and I do use Map Source so that is helpful.

Yep, it's quite a bit different - some pluses and some minuses, but on the whole, it's a good improvement.

I'd also have to find out if it was something that could be swapped out though.

Thought I'd have a look yesterday, but the Zumo case is closed by smaller Torx screws than I have a driver for. Smallest I have is T8, and I'm thinking these must be T5 or T6. Anyone know, so I can order the appropriate tool?

If you can hear her through the AUX setting, it sounds like you have audio routing setup correctly there.  The only thing I don't know for sure is what the 'DEMO' units might have different.

I can answer this now. The Demo version does indeed interrupt other audio sources. Just not on my bike!  I'm lucky to have a friend's non-CVO Ultra Limited in my garage, where it overwinters, so I tried it on that - works happily.   That suggests that the "Audio, Tone Only, Both" on AUX3 on my Boom unit is set to Audio instead of Both - will need a dealer Digitech flash to fix that, which ain't going to happen till Spring.  :(

Tone is indeed inaudible.

OK, screws are T5 - driver ordered.

Updated to 595 using the 4.60 firmware yesterday, and now have maps working happily despite the lack of NVRAM (Same region can be split between the device and a μSD card, luckily). Some jiggery-pokery involved in getting maps to work, as it has none and is not an LM device, and some more will be involved going forwards, but I can live with that.

Shame that the 595 upgrade means you lose the HD logo on boot up, and surprising that having lost that, it's not replaced by the Garmin one from the standard Zumo. Kind of hard to get my head round that....  Still, it's the only minor annoyance. (So far at least!)

T5 Jim.  This is technically referred to as "itty-bitty-phukker."  I had to order that driver special a couple years ago for a different Garmin task.

Well, I can definitely say that an NVRAM upgrade is not possible.  :(

https://fccid.io/IPH-A4AMGB00/Internal-Photos/INTERNAL-PHOTOS-2234206

It's really strange that all four variants - the Garmin, the Roadtech, and the demo version of the Roadtech - all have different surface mount memory, yet all have exactly the same part number for the main (and only, really) board.

It would be nice to know how the RT one generates the tone, but I guess we'll never know!
