15A fuse popping
« on: October 19, 2020, 07:24:02 AM »

My 07 Ultra  is blowing the 15A fuse for the radio when I tip the 3 way rocker switch for the speakers.

Wondering has anyone had this fault?

I'm not to sure where to start trouble shooting it.

Any advice appreciated.

I forgot to mention it's  fine with the switch in the centre position the fuse pops when it's moved forward or backwards position.

Have you added any accessories lately?

I ask because I had a similar thing happen to my '06. I ran too many items off one circuit. It was fine around town, but on the road it would blow a fuse when I engaged the cruise. Later I wired everything through a relay and that solved the issue.

Have you installed something new recently?

Only these floodlights but they're connected to the lights.

I've checked all the other rocks witches they're fine it's only the radio fuse when the speaker switch it's moved off the centre position point either way the fuse blows.

Found in the service book it's number 5 radio power 15A fuse that the speaker switch is blowing

Not being familiar with that system, what is supposed to happen when the switch is rocked either way?

In the forward position,  all speakers are off.  meaning (radio, CD/MP3, AUX and CB) is played in the headset only.

In the centre position,  the radio,  CD/MP3 player or the AUX is played over the speakers while the CB is played only in the headset.

In the rearward position,   the speakers are on.  With a SPKR switch indicator lit, the radio,  the CD/MP3 player or any AUX and CB are played through both the rider and passenger speakers. When the CB gets a signal every thing mutes and the CB is played over the speakers.

I’d start by check wires around the switch and radio area looking for something rubbed through and touching a ground.

An electrical schematic would also would help you determine exactly what wires to look for. Could end up being one of the components also, unplug one at a time and see if fuse blows.

Not an electrical guy at all but that one little switch seems to be doing a lot of work. I would check it first.

Been at it all day found how to do a radio DTC  speaker system check, it all check out OK. There's no DTC check for the switch

Pic of the switch, now got to find a wire schematic for the switch and what wire is what. (Switch in question on the left)

Will continue the hunt tomorrow  :-\

Got stuck back into it today. Found a wiring diagram on the switches once I got it apart found surface corrosion (small amount)
On one connection of the switch.
Did a clean up of the switch I used ACF-50 on the switch.

:D :D expecting too be popping a number of fuses I ordered up some got a bag of 50. After doing the clean up and working the ACF-50 through the switch and testing didn't pop one fuse😂. No bother only paid about $1.50 us £2.86 on this side.

All back together now Thanks for the help

Did you test it as seen in pic? With the switch’s set to the side? Curious if the problem will stay gone or reappear with the harnesses back in the normal position. I’ve seen problems disappear while testing then come back when the wire/terminal or connector get back in it faulty state.

You got plenty of fuses if you need them
