« on: July 20, 2012, 10:53:26 AM »

Looking for pics of anyone who has stepped up to 21" front.  Also, how does to ride and handle?
Thanks

There's several people that have done this to either a RG or SG/UC.  New wheel/tire, new fender painted to match, and the fender might hit on top with a bad bump unless you do something to the front end.

Besides the above considerations, you should also consider that the load rating on the tire is very likely to be different, so if you use the bike for touring, that's something to think about.  It will change the handling too.

My personal opinion is that it's just for show bikes and bar hoppers.  19" is big enough.  I've known people who have done it and then gone back to a 19 or 18.

Thank you.  I am open to just getting a new 19 also.  I am concerned about tinkering with the handling and all that.  Knowing that Harley put it out with a 19" and I enjoy the ride now makes me happy with 19".  But i would like to really test a 21" and see what it feels like.  I will consider all options!  Thanks for input.

Also, alot of the larger wheels are installed with one rotor so as to view the custom wheel, but with the deminished stopping power, especially with a large touring bike, it could be dicey and definately something to get used to. I'm happy with my stock.

Got me.... I ran a 21" with dual discs for 39k miles on my SERG, no issues solo, with the OL, or fully loaded for a road trip. An 01 though not a 12. I will do it again on the new bike without hesitation.

Hey, that looks great!  I can see there are varied opinions on this.  You seem to have no problem with it at all.  I guess I am going to need to ride one and do some homework.  I do like the look!

Thanks

Still hoping to hear from others on their experiences

And pics ! !

Any Maple CVO's out there with 21" or ANY custom wheels !?

The wheel looks killer.  It puts the stock wheel to shame.  What kind of issues did you have with the conversion to a single disc/caliper and the ABS?

very nice look, whos fender is that ?

Thanks for the positive responses! Details:

Fender and Lowers are from HawgHalters - http://www.hawghalters.com/
 - Fender painted locally here in Akron, Ohio area ($600 for paint alone)
 - Spacers required due to leg change with that fender combo (also bought through Hawg Halters)
 - Progressive Monotubes added in front with 1" lowering option to get almost back to stock height after 21" wheel increase in front height.

Wheels are PM Heathens (21x17 combo)
 - Went to single sided caliper (6 piston) also from PM
 - Wheels were a package deal from Coastal Moto in FL - http://www.coastalmoto.com/

Bike rides better than stock.

Only issues were paint and inability to reuse stock fender due to metal bridge on stock fender and the HawgHalters Lowers design. They do not work together without having to cut the stock fender which I elected not to do and got wrap fender + paint instead. I would've went that way eventually but wanted to get through this summer without spending the extra ca$h. It all worked out.

I recommend this setup as the "sweet spot" for anyone trying to go to a 21" wheel (21/17 - combo w/200 rear tire).

Why stop at 21"?  How about 23"?  BTW, you can still lock up the front wheel with a single brake rotor, assuming no abs.  The second rotor makes it easier on your hand to pull and gives greater longevity.

Because in order to go any bigger than 21" you MUST make alterations to the neck and tripple trees which may include cutting and welding which I for one was not interested in doing to a 30k bike. They do look cool but in order to get the right geometry that has to be done and it's not very cheap either.

As for the brake, mine works fine. It's actually a bit smoother on stopping than duals are, kind of like a softail.

here is my photo-shop idea:

Here is an 2011 with a 21"x3 1/2" Renegade Racine that I put on a couple of weeks ago @ Sturgis. Road home the way we came and I honestly can say the bike handles better, especially with cattle guards and holes etc. I love the new Avon tire that came with the deal as well!!!

and the bike,I think it needs a new rear wheel as well... would anyone stick with the stock size or would U go to an 18" wheel?? If so, why the 18" vs the 17" and what would be the change in height, and what would I feel different about the ride w/18"vs 17"? Help appreciated!

You can do a 23" wheel in the front with just a raked triple tree. No need to chop the neck.

Yes, you can and that's more $$ as well. For everything. They look good too. 21" was big enough for the look I wanted and least expensive way to go for all components required.

I'm contemplating a 23" on the new bike. The 21" was nice, no complaints however I really like the 26" on my chopper.

Here's a few shots of a friends skunk.
He wanted the 21" wheel and the apes.
Harley of Charlotte did the work.
The paint on the fender is a perfect match.
Same painter that did the N-Line trailer for me.
The title of this thread is asking for pictures so here's a few.

That's it.
Not my cup of tea but I rode it and it rode fine.
The upside is I got the stock fender, front wheel w/tire, the mirrors (omg no) and rear tire.
HD of Charlotte did the work and if any questions call Steve Mac in service.

Thanks for the skunk pics with the 21" and the apes!

Can you get the word from your buddy on how the ride/handling is now.

That setup is basically what I am considering.  But, I know that will be a big day and a big change!

Apes and 21" wheel ....  Im afraid it will a challenge to steer?

Or... maybe it is nirvana !!

Please hand him your keyboard and set him free!

Or PM me and I will give you my email to give to him.  Really would appreciate it!

Thanks!

The stock, '12 CVO RGC has an 18" rear, stock and a 19" front.

Yes, stock on my '11 RGC was 18" front/ 17" rear. I do have the 21" front as pictured, the rear is my stock 17" which is UGLY at this point... I don't really want to spend another grand plus because only the tire and just the edge of the rim proper....

I put 21's on a non CVO 2008 RG.  Loved the look, as a matter of fact everyone loved the look but I never though it had the ride stability after I made that mod and I ended up selling it the following year.  It may work just fine for others, just didn't work out well for me.

Curious why he put those bars on? Those are for a batwing bike not a roadglide.
