Key fob battery
« on: April 17, 2008, 06:12:49 PM »

Just curious how long folks' key fob batteries are lasting. My '05 seems to be weaker. Probably gonna replace it soon.

And now the truth......

Rode up to Twin Peaks in San Francisco and shut my bike off.  Now keep in mind that I have always had my bike programmed so that the alarm sets automatically.  I go take care of whatever business I was there for and come back to the bike.  Out of habit, I've already got the keys out and pressing the key fob as I'm approaching the bike but I don't see the turn signals flash.  Uh-ohhhh. :nixweiss:

I messed around with it for quite awhile before I finally surrendered to the fact that I was not going to be successful in getting it to disarm.  I walked back down to the drugstore and bought a battery (pricey little things).  Walked back to the bike and still nothing.  Oh crap, now what?

Oh yea, we're able to disarm it by using the turn signals.  Get into the saddle bags to look for the owner's manual and remember that I took it out the day before (looking at something or other) and left it laying on the coffee table.

I call Jim and he finally walks me through it and I get the bike disarmed and I get home to my manual.  Called the dealership the next day and they suggest that I buy another battery (remember, we're always supposed to try the easiest thing first......and we've all had an experience with bad batteries from the mfg.).  Yep, that's all it was.....YEP, they have a battery and when they go, they go right now! :2vrolijk_21:

Just curious how long folks' key fob batteries are lasting. My '05 seems to be weaker. Probably gonna replace it soon.

Set my alarm at a restaurant couple months ago.  Came out, fingered the fob... uh oh.  Ended up holding the fob real close to the bike and I was saved. Replaced the battery next day.  Whoa! Better range than I ever knew!  30 feet, maybe?  Now I'll use the range as the "Lo batt" indicator.  I don't use the alarm very much, tho.  So, about 3 1/2 years life.

Keep in mind the new ones, without the button, will die faster, especially if you mess around with the bike a lot in a way that causes the bike to look for the key fob. Mine died on a recent trip. One gas stop was fine and the next it would not disarm. After trying twice, I got the buttons right to disarm using the turn signals. I moved the bike out of the gas stations way and replaced the fob battery (I carry extras). Once again it worked fine. Mine was just over 18 months old but I do ride a lot (40k on the bike). Carry a spare friends!  ;)

cd, do you have the P/N on that battery? I better order a few! Thanks :nixweiss:

ADDED: Nevermind! It's in the owner's manual, Panasonic 2032 or equiv. Replace every year according to the book.

I do the same.  The battery # for the 04- 05's is 2032.  Probably fits other years and I think I got it at Lowe's or any store that has a large selection of batteries.

The owners manual tells you to replace the fob battery every year.  It takes (1) CR-2032 watch battery.  I have never changed mine.  I bought it new in January of 2005.  I think it's time for me to change the batteries in all my fobs.  Better to be safe than sorry with a dead fob battery :xyxthumbs:!!  Cuz you know when it does die you will probably have your bike armed and you will have to disarm the bike the manual way.

I had mine quit working one morning in reno nv. I thought the battery was dead but i had the spare too and it didnt work either. Of course i never programmed my security code to disarm it manualy. Come to find out that the fob can get out of sync and wont work period!  The remedy is to hold your fob button down for 15 seconds and it will re sync itself. This little knowledge may save you some grief. Page 109  2005 seeg manual :bananarock:

Since those batteries have a long shelve life, you can get them really cheap by buying bulk at www.digikey.com

I'm sure there are other places as well as long as they move their merchandise. I keep spares on the bike for both the key fob and the alarm pager.

Don't forget to wrap them in cellophane or something to keep them from shorting out and going bad. I use my heat sealer and package each one in it's own plastic bag. More than once I've helped out another rider when theirs dies on the road.  ;)
