Prototype Zumo Mount for Road Glide
« on: August 06, 2008, 06:48:11 PM »

Here's three pictures of a prototype mount for a Zumo Gps unit on a Road Glide inner fairing. This mounts replaces the old Harley Quest mount. Hoping to get some opinions from you guys, if you think there's a market??...Thanks...Sid

I like your prototype, sure will help those that have drilled into their fairings and want to upgrade without figuring out how to hide holes and or buying a new inner, good job,,  :2vrolijk_21:

Very nice looking piece Sid.  Only downside I think of isn't a comment on the part at all.  Just that using this would make the GPS mount to the bike all but permanent.  Move the GPS to another vehicle for awhile and the mount here would be funny looking/incomplete without it.

While I don't think I'd do it to the nearly impossible to replace odd-red stock inner on 00 SERG I'd consider on the inner I'm going to get painted to match the outer.  Would paint the mount at the same time.  So if you do these please advise.

Did you decide anything Sid?  Will there ever be a part like this available for those of us that just can't help ourselves?

How does it mount?

Is it easily removable?

I like the idea being at "eye" level and very interested in buying on or two, too.  I do have some of the same questions about mounting and was wondering if the mount could be placed on the "left side" of the Road Glide Radio?
A creative design that looks good.

Sid's been on and off the site a few times since the questions have been asked.  No answers though.  Hard to get the warm fuzzies about a potential vendor when even easy questions are left hanging.  I'm out.

Sorry for not getting back quicker, this is a item that would take awhile to manufacture. What we were trying to see is if there was enough instrest to persue it. The prototype was hand made from ABS, there would have to be a mold made so they could be injection molded. We really just wanted to see if there was enough instrest to go to the next step, sorry if I missled anyone...Sid

Sid,

Great looking item.  From what I can see, you didn't mislead anyone.  What I do see, is a few folks that jumped the gun and were hoping to get their hands on one.  I don't know what the break-even point would be on these for mold production and of course the final detailing on the prototype prior to that, but if the numbers aren't too far out there, I think you'd have a winner with this one.  Some folks did raise some good questions that could sure help tuning of the prototype prior to molding process, but the math just might work.  Good luck with it if you choose to venture further.

Wasn't pissed off Sid.  That would've sounded a lot different.  Just had asked a question of a prospective vendor and waited awhile without response.  Very reasonably lost interest.

Knew any production would be awhile.  That was obvious from the outset.  That production would be later, however, does not imply that information must also.

Of course there are lots of reasons to choose to spend money with vendors, or not spend money with them.  Ease of information supply is one.  How one thinks they might respond after the purchase if there's any question or issue is another.  A prospective vendor cracking wise about "post police" before a dollar is even spent doesn't suggest well for the latter.

Been caught in my Zippers with vendors before.  It's only prudent to work with those that don't cop an attitude.

Don, you must be pretty thin skinned. I didn't think you were pissed, I just thought it was instresting you felt it necessary to let everyone know I was on line and did not answer their questions. We joined this site around the same time Aug. 04 you have 25K post I have about 200, It's obvious you have enough time to be involved in almost every thread, I don't. If you will go back and read the first post you will see we were just looking to see if there was any intrest. We did not have a finished part, were not ready to go to market and did not have all the answers yet. You are free to have the last word and to quote you...I'm out

I like it.  I had a 05 Road Glide with the Quest 2 and used the HD fairing bracket.  What I really really liked about that set up was the GPS was pretty much line of sight and I really didn't have to move my head much to see the GPS, worked really good.  I'd much rather prefer this set up for the Ultra if you are planning that.  Looks like the bracket is beefy enough to handle the increased weight of the Zumo.  I would be concerend goiing over bumps and rough roads that it would not break off?  But looks good you are on to something there!

Not for a GPS that will be outdated some day and most likely the newer one will take a different mount.

Good point Chip, but all this stuff goes out of date at some point, thats why we have it mount where the old Harley Quest mounts.

If this mount actually becomes reality, I'd love to see what you could do for an Ultra.

Thanks Andy.  It's easy enough for someone to get invested enough in their own product or rep that their defense seems most important.  Fair observers always help.
