'04 seeg tire upgrade
« on: January 17, 2009, 07:49:45 PM »

this time around I want to replace the dunlops with either avons or metzlers. i want to go with a lower profile tire to help lower bike a bit what are my options? i am still running stock rims. i know the change wont be much but whatever i can get will help get both feet flat on the road. i've already put on progressive shocks which helped alot.

You can go with a Metzler 880 on the rear in 150/80-16 that will work well with stock rims and no clearance issues.  You may have to trim the plastic belt guard, but that will give you an excuse to buy a chrome cover.  More chrome is good!  The 150/80 has a lower load rating (71 vs. 77) than stock, but unless you really load up your bike (TP, heavy passenger) I wouldn't worry about it.  This tire has worked well for me for 4 years, no problems.  Hope this helps :2vrolijk_21:

I have to disagree on the use of the 150 ME880 tire on a bagger. The load rating is 761 pounds on the 71 rated tire vs 908 pounds on the 77 rated tire.

Also the 150 tire will be ~.8" (~22mm) taller than the 140 tire

Have you thought about the Elite 3 Dunlop?

I have to agree with hd-dude and go with the Dunlop elite 3. I used to use nothing but the ME-880, until about two years ago when all North American Metzler changed form manufacturing in Germany to Brazil. The tires did not give anywhere near the mileage of the German made. They have also experienced tire de lamination. Check over on the HTT website were there was considerable feedback in regards to the Brazilian Metzler.

Jim, would the lower load rating effect tire wear?  Never got more than 8K miles out the the rear Metzler.  Also, it seems the bike sits a little lower with the 80 profile vs. the 90 stock, so that's why I made the comment.  Never actually measured it.

What has been your experience with the Elite 3 tire?  Looks like a similar pattern to the Metzler.  Need new tires soon anyway, not adverse to making a change.

Pete;

The lower rating could affect wear if the bike exceeds the rating (which the SEEG does of the 71 rated tire)

The stock tire is an MU85 Series which is equivelent to the 140/70

I have installed many E3's and the concesus on them is good. Most all are being replaced at 10K on the rear.

Jim, I looked at the Dunlop site, seems I would need the MT90B16 on the front and the MU90B16 on the rear.  That rear tire is rated 78H (930 lbs @ 40 psi).  I didn't see a 140/70 offered.  Is this correct or is the site screwed up?

Yeah, you and me both.  Someone needs to come out with an HBRR rated tire! :) :2vrolijk_21:

Its an MU85 which is equivilent to the 140
The MT is equivilent to the 130

For these tires Dunlop uses the Alpha sizing where Metzler uses the metric.

You would use the MT90B16 for the front and the MU85B16 for the rear on the 04-07 models.

They were stock on my SERK Jim! And I replace them with same when needed. HD changed the fronts on us to D407's from E3's, but I buy E3 fronts too, just not from HD. I don't like that D407 they used to replace it. ;)

Not to speak for Howie, but I believe it is Cybil (SERK with hard bags and KTP).

Maybe I'm confused, but there is no MU85B16 in the Elite 3, only MU90B16.  Is that what I should use?

You got it Pete. The SERK uses E3 Radials though, not bias ply. Not sure on the oversized E3 bias 16's. I'm sure Jim knows what fits there. ;)

I see that, my Drag Specialties book here shows the MU85? (Drag Part Number 0306-0039) I just check my ordering system and they have a correction, it is an MU90.....
