PJ,

Roeder's Harley in Ohio is currently offering the Advanced Audio radio revised for the 05 and earlier bikes.  The physical connections are the same.  They're doing a software revision to the radio.  From there it's plug and play installation (so they say).

They've been offering it for a couple of weeks now.  Selling it at the same price as they normally would ($840.00).  A buddy of mine in Sandusky has one in his SEEG right now.  I ordered one of the radios yesterday.

pj57, You are a daring sole, performing major bike surgery with the surgeon at the end of a phone.  I am not sure this is something I would attempt myself as I break out into a sweat at the thought of cutting all those wires.  [smiley=nervous.gif] I will wait on the "Retrofit-for-Dummies" kit to come out.  I will be anxious to see your progress.

PJ is calling Roeder's HD to find out the skinny on their retrofit. If they've already done the research, I'll be cutting down on the chance of screwing something up.

Hey Twolane!  Got the same response from Roeders as you.  I was quoted $1700 for the Radio with XM, including installation.  Guess they're the only game in town right now so if you've got the $$$ and can travel to Ohio, go for it! Thanks for the info, PJ

Twolane - by "no quibble" do you mean they don't mind if you install/provide the parts then have them do the software update?

Twolane - I agree that I'm probably hosed on this one and if I were a dealer I wouldn't set on up on a radio that wasn't mine either.  After seeing the harnesses, I still don't figure how the installation is simply plug-in.  Guess I'll just wait this one out and see if somebody local comes up with something...man, there goes my chance to be the first kid on the block with the retrofit.  PJ

PJ, with any luck I'll know more in a week or so.  They suggested that the one I ordered will ship on Friday.  If so I'll have it on Tuesday or Wednesday.  That means I'll either have to pull a late nighter the day it arrives or (hopefully) will get it in on the weekend after it arrives.  If what they're describing on the phone is accurate the red bike will be going without too much trouble.  If not, however, well; I might be hosed too  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Here's the link for those that need it.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HARLEY-ADVANCED-AUDIO-AM-FM-CD-RADIO-76412-06_W0QQitemZ4582139176QQcategoryZ35571QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting

So, 2Lane, it appears that to get the new system up to the 60 watts we currently have on our 04/05 SEEG's, one would have to permanently mount the Tourpak, as the amp is mounted under it.....right?  'Course I think you keep your Tourpak on anyway, but this would blow the deal for me, as I mainly ride without it...maybe you will see a way the amp can be put in the fairing when you do your install?

You're right and that is one of my concerns on this little project Elvis.  I have a tour pak on for any trip of any length but I don't have it on all the time.  I've also got both the King and the chopped paks.  So a permanant mounted amp really isn't an option.

The new radio's internal amp isn't nearly as big as our stock radio's.  The new radio kit comes with the new speakers so I'll have those and the Hogtunes to play with.  I'm hoping that a combination there will be good enough.  If not I'll have to fabricate a quick-release of some kind for the accessory amp so it can go from one tour pak to the other.  Not too worried about a harness connector though.  That'd be the easy part.

How big is the amp?  If not too large, perhaps it could be mounted in one of the saddlebags???  Only thing would be getting air flow to it.  Just a thought.

By the way; one other thing I learned this morning is an avoidable mistake should someone else be considering collecting the pieces for the radio swap.  Harley shows three accessory harnesses that might be used with the new radio.  Two of them are described as just adding XM or XM and the Bluetooh cell phone connections (respectively).  The third harness offers ability to connect everything (i.e., XM, Bluetooth, CB, etc etc etc).

Since a lot of that we really don't have as an option since there won't be locations to mount it on an SEEG I saw no reason to buy a $125 harness when a $40 harness would do.  Wrong.....

We have to use the big harness.  Both of the smaller harnesses so I'm told now will only work with 06 and newer Ultras.  There are apparently some significant additions to the stock harness on the Ultras that carries some things that must be there and which are not part of the two smaller harnesses.

So, at least from what I was told this morning, doing a retrofit means using the "big" harness 70169-06 even though several of the accessories it might account for we won't really have the option of using (at least not without changing the dash and accepting some permanent wiring to and losing the detachability of the tour pak).

Wow, unfortunately, the $$$$s are really adding up on this mod.  About $1,000 for the radio and harness, plus another $350 for the amplifier (or be satisfied with a downgrade from our current 60 watts to a measely 20 watts per channel) and the cost of installation if you don't want to do it yourself.

I'd like to have one of these, too, but it's beginning to make my $525 HID headlight seem like a bargain.

OK, you have a point with selling the stock SEEG hardware, but I'll be surpised if some "nut" goes upwards of $900 (doing the math on your numbers) for your stock radio and speakers.

Never know until it lists.  But 50-75% of MSRP for good current used parts has been a consistent average on the stuff I've sold on eBay.  Even if it's 50% it still makes the overall upgrade very tolerable if you really want the XM or other options of the new radio and don't want to handlebar mount the stuff.

I agree the new radio and its available options are nice and I don't mean to come across as sounding negative with my comments.  I am glad to see the retrofit option being made available for us pre-'06 owners and like I said, I want one too.  Just can't seem to get past the sound of the cash register ringing in my head every time I read this thread.

Brian, if the price tag were going to be much more than it is I'd have bailed out.  But (not counting the amp) I really expect to be out of this for less than $500.00.  And I guess I want the integrated XM that bad.  Factor in that I also just get a kick out of having it before Harley says we can and I'm invested in the process even more.

Another consideration is that if the retro really is a software revision rather than just some intermediate cable adaptor it's likely that HD won't issue a second part number for the radio but will keep that as it is now along with some extra-cost software product they'll sell us.  This dealer is wanting to push their solution so the cost is for the radio only and the software is thrown in free.  The retro/upgrade requirements can't get any cheaper than that  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I think you're going to want the amp.  Otherwise, it will be the sonic equivalent of going from a 103" back to an 88".  And we all know that is IMPOSSIBLE! ;)

Boy, I just love it when TwoLane 'guina-pigs' these projects for us, don't you Brian?  I'm vicariously living through this thread w/o risking my money and sanity and we've got 2Lane to thank all the way.  I just hope it comes out good for his (and everyone's) sake, as this is a mod many will want to do.  I'm tickled to death w/ my stock stereo on the SEEG but would love to have the integrated XM too.  We're here with moral support if you need us TwoLane.  Har!  [smiley=2vrolijk_09.gif]  spyder

When are you gonna do the headlight switch?    spyder [smiley=confused5.gif]

Headlight should be going in either tomorrow or Saturday, assuming it makes it here this week.

The new 06 radio is installed in the 05 red bike.  The radio and accessory harness arrived today.  Box with the XM kit is (hopefully) running a day late.

Given that it didn't all get here at the same time I assumed I'd wait to do the install until at least all the part were here; if not the weekend.  Yeah, right....

Watched Monday Night Football.  Sat back down to get some more work done at my desk.  About 2:15 AM (normal bedtime) couldn't stand it anymore.  Wandered out to the garage and took the fairing off.  At 3:25 set the time on the new radio in the bike and heard it play the first time.

The install of the radio itself really was a simple plug and play affair.  Installation itself with some hopefully helpful photos for whomever does it next will be detailed in this thread:

(PJ, take a look there, might have realized why you didn't have sound.  Check out the part about the speaker harness.)
