Question on antenna elimination
« on: April 27, 2011, 06:02:09 PM »

I am eliminating the whip antenna's on my CUSE2 and going with a hidden antennae inside the fairing.  I am left with 2 unsightly posts on the back of my leather tourpak, and removal does not appear to be an option.  I am wondering what others have done, or if anyone has a suggestion?  I called J&P and 2 dealers with no help.

Thank you!

You might be stuck with those posts there.  I think you can but some acorn caps that might cover up the studs.  They are chrome so they gotta look better than that bare thread there.   :nixweiss:

Did you complete the antenna elimination project?  I parked too close to the garage door and when it closed it caught the antenna and bent it all the way to the floor.  The antenna is fine, but the lower spring (small one) is bent.  I haven't checked with HD yet, but if they hold true to form they will want to sell me the whole antenna assembly rather than just the spring.  Anyhow if you no longer have a use for the spring I would sure like to have it. Thanks much.

To each his own, but I'd recommend the "shorty" antenna's over both the hidden antenna or the full size whips.  Available from Harley for about $30 MSRP each, they are about 19 inches long and they don't get hung up in garage doors or other things like the whips do.  Looks a lot better also, especially if you have to run around with the two antenna bases stuck on the back of your T-P anyway.  If you ride only in or near big cities with a lot of strong radio stations, internal antenna's might be fine.  But in my admittedly limited experience, they tend to be much worse than traditional antenna's out in the boonies.

Brett -- sorry, but I trashed the whip saw antenna's after I got my hidden antennae installed in the fairing.  I have two shorties I put on the tour pak just for looks when I have the tour pak on.  But honestly I hardly ever have the tour pak on anymore after I made it detachable.  Sorry about that.

My friend had the same problem after removing her antenna's so she went to the auto store and found a pack of these little black rubber tips.  She doesn't know what they were used for but they fit perfectly on the screws.  She added a little glue and pushed them on.  She gets a lot of comments from other riders that want to know where she got them and what are they used for.

What did you do with the amplifier when you installed the kit?

Best bet is to buy a fiberglass tourpack and paint to match, get the one with no antennas on it cleans up the whole bike and eliminates the leather.

It was too much for me to take on, so I purchased new J&M speakers and amp and had my dealer install them.  Now only my front two speakers work, which is fine for me because like I said I hardly ever have the tour pak on and don't need those speakers.  My front speakers rock the house though!

If you know someone that works in a tool shop or machine shop you could have them make you two thin plates say 1/16 thick with studs welded on them and leather cover them and bolt in place.  May eliminate the buched up leather on RH side.

I didn't like the long stock antenna, so I cut it down to about 6 inches. AM/FM works as well as ever. CB of course does not.

I found J&M stubbies for around $25.00

Here are the same ones for less than $20.00.

Go the the auto parts store and get a couple pf packs of vacuum hose plugs.  I put a couple of those over mine when I relocated the antennae  and it looks great.
Cost you all of three bucks.  Guaranteed it'll be the cheapest mod you ever do to your bike =P
