Ultima 127 Main seal
« on: July 29, 2010, 12:50:48 PM »

I am having a problem with my 127 that I was hoping someone could help me out with. Ultima ships these motors with the main seal set up for an open belt so I put in a new seal with the lip towards the primary it was ok for a while but soon I was gaining volume in My oil tank. I put in a new seal again and still pulling all the oil out of the primary, anyone run into this problem with an Ultima engine?? I run ATF in the primary as I have an S&S clutch. Having ATF mixed with Motor oil is not a good thing.

I usually see it the other way around.Primary gaining oil.
Be sure the motor is vented well.Vent to atmosphere.I run a line out of each head, and use the back of the case as well. The 4 1/4" pistons build a lot of pressure.

I opened the vent in the cases and it seems better, no mist coming out any of the vent lines just air so thats good.

Opening the lower vent seemed to help at the begining but now it's the same I guess I will have to check the cases to see if there are any cracks or some place it could leak from.

You might try to replace engine spacer and vent the primary and turn the seal around. Advice from a friend who has used several Ultima motors. Good luck.

I was thinking about putting the same type of vent thats on the tranmission, already have the new spacer that came with the 3 phase 40amp alternator I noticed in the ultima manual they mention about putting sealant inside the stator when running an open belt I wonder if there might be some leaking problems where the steel joins the aluminum.

Yes the same type of vent hose for the tranny is what he used. Don't know about the leak thing as I was talking to him on the phone when I responded to your post. I trust his opinion as he has been wrenching for 40 years and I have been riding with him for 15.

Yes good advice thanks I will let you know if I find out anything else once I get it apart after I return from overseas. Do you know if anyone has found a better main seal (double lip) as the stock one has one main lip and then a smaller one (like a dust seal).

Solved the seal problem, the spacer supplied with the Compufire 40 amp charging system was too small on the OD so the lips on the seal would barely touch, installed the stock spacer back along with a vent in the primary and no more problem.
