Hot Running 103
« on: May 12, 2009, 09:07:57 AM »

I was told by a member of this forum that someone could help me. I have a 2005 FLHTCUI that I added a Stage 1 103 and a SE 6 speed. I have added a super premium oil cooler and had it Dyno'd to richen it up a little. I use Mobil 1 V twin 20w50 synthetic oil also. The bike runs great but it runs HOT! The last caveat is I live in Florida where the temps are already in the mid 90's. If I sit in traffic for any length of time I hit 300 degrees +.

Can anyone tell me how to get this bike to run cooler besides moving out of Florida?

PS I gave up trying to sell my house.

red line 20 -60 might help a bit. are you sure the A/F ratio is where it needs to be. I know you said richened up but can you see it in the chart from a dyno? that sounds too hot. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I took the bike to 2 different dyno's and it does seem cooler than with the factory tune. Where do you get Redline oil? I have used Mobil 1 since 2003 but I am open to anything that will cool my bike. I think that the best cure is moving to a cooler climate.

Thanks again.

There are a few tricks with enrichment and insuriong correct timing through using a sert or tts masterune ecm interface device but these are aircooled V's and are effin hot.

I have a flathead 74inch VL that is 74 years old and will roast your kiwi's off so, keep movin, stay out of traffic...and remember love bug season is near!

I hate to correct you but the Love Bugs are here. I'm in West Volusia, the City of DeBary, and the LB's showed up last week. There is nothing worse than lovebugs and, as you put it, fried kiwi's.

Thanks for your help.

Miker:

                                       :worthless:

Baddog,  I ran a 103 in my 04 RG for four years.  Race tuned, Rinehart true duals, high flow a/c and 257 cams here in CA.  I ran HD Syn 3.  No heat issue.  Maybe 260* in bad traffic which was rare.  Are you getting popping on deceleration?  If so, you're still too lean.   Lowers?  Take off of course.  Other than that...   :nixweiss:

:)   Enterprise Road is free from of love bugs ... What are you talking about hehe.   I have a 103 that is fine here in Debary with the heat sounds more like whoever setup the map for you.   We took the bikes up to Jacksonville in 97 degree heat and had no issues in town with them.

I used a guy named Jim Brown. He used to operate Bragging Rights Dyno and set up at Stormy Hill HD. Before him I had Bob at Seminole HD do it and he really had things screwed up. When I complained about the 26 mpg he said that's as good as it gets. Jim Brown has it running great, no popping at all. Is there a chance that the McEwan oil temp gauge could be a piece of crap?

EagleRider,

I am across Enterprise in Summer Haven :)   Since you guys are so close we should get together for a ride through the forest :)

Baddog652,

Jim is a friend of mine too bad he is no longer dyno tuning, he now works for Drag.  I am not a SCHOG member, although I know many of them :)    Question for you John, do your pipes have bungs in them?   Jim may have it running better, but my concern is from your base map that there are very few changes made in the low riding areas and hence you are still a tad lean there and have more heat.

Can you email me the map that is in your bike and i can take a look at it and compare it to the stock map ?

I don't know what bungs are and Jim didn't give me a CD of the map. All he used was my race tuner.

I've got 71k on my 06 - V&H 2 into 1, k&N, PCIII.  By the way 27mpg is the norm when the bike is running at peak performance.  Any popping decelerating means you are to lean.  There is a guy in Middleburg near here that does nothing but dynotune.  Also, some of the dealers have some really knowledgeable techs.  Some don't.  I had FuelMoto dyno my bike in Neenah Wisconsin last year when I rode up for the 105th.  That is all he does - dyno - tuners - air cleaners - and pipes.  He is a very nice guy and has an 800 number on the web.  His name is Jamie.  He may be able to give you some maps for similar set ups.  Even when my bike is at peak performance it still seems to run hot.  I also use the Mobil1 but am going to try the RoyalPurple max cycle.  This stuff is very expensive so I'm going to buy it in a5 gallon size to see if it helps.  I change the oil about every other month or so during riding season (YEAR ROUND)in FL....  In fact I ride less in the summer due to the heat (I hate the heat - the bike tolerates it).  So good luck.  Did you read the post on the baker oil pan?  This could really help also.  I may have to try one of them down the road...

"Bungs" are the fittings in the header pipes where you screw in the oxygen sensors on late model bikes.  They didn't come standard on Harley's until the '06 Dyna and then the rest of the Big Twin lineup in '07.  Aftermarket pipes can be ordered either with or without.
