Trans main bearing inner race - what it is
« on: March 08, 2009, 10:29:41 PM »

Not having looked at the actual part it took me a bit to figure out exactly what this is and why you need the special tools.

The main bearing inner race is a machined steel "race" (think pipe).

It is pressed onto the main shaft and is on the outboard side of the forward belt pulley. The roller bearing in the inner primary rides on this race.

You need this special tool to remove the race in order to remove the pulley - do trans work.

You need a different special tool to install a new race.

Baker makes a "Hi-Torque" replacement bearing that eliminate this spacer.

Good pics Duane, Your lucky you were able to get te tool in there to remove it, many, about 60-70%, of these inner bearing races walk inward toward the 5th gear/mainshaft seal. When this happens you need to cut them off. The Baker 1 piece unit is the way to go. :2vrolijk_21:

That was the recommendation I got when I talked to a Baker rep. But That was the same rep that didn't know about the HD style of auto chain tensioner  :nixweiss:

I've been thinking about changing over to one of these as well when I do my 6 speed upgrade.
Does anyone know if these are the same parts?

They look pretty darn similar

They do look the same, Idea is the same, eliminate the race that can and does walk inward. A must do upgrade if the inner primary is off and / or tranny work is being done.

Yes they are the same... I bought both just to compare... Easy to install... I also installed Baker OD6 with R ratio and .80 final 6th gear ratio... The OD6 will handle higher HP & TQ than the DD6 will per Bert Baker...

Nice job Duane, I didn't know this, I'll keep this one filed away.
